Viewers were left in shock after Damian Lewis's Emmy Award-winning character Nicholas Brody was killed off in the 'Homeland' series 3 finale on Sunday.

The show's anti-hero, who spent months on the run after being accused of bombing the CIA headquarters in Langley, was sentenced to death in the 90-minute-long dramatic episode.

Brody had just completed a mission in Iran - on behalf of the CIA - when his extraction plan with Carrie Mathison (Clare Danes) was overthrown by new chief, Senator Lockhart.

Did the show's bosses make the right decision to kill Brody off? Here's what the critics have to say...

Michael Hogan thinks the show should now end rather then return for a fourth series. Writing in The Telegraph, he said: "I can’t help thinking it should be put out of its misery and stuck on TV’s memorial wall. As Saul said, echoing Brody: 'When it’s over, it’s over. Pull down the shades and go home'."

In The Guardian, Rebecca Nicholson observed that Brody's death means "we won't be in for more of the same circular stories taking the same familiar path" in the next series.

And Ann Lee wrote in The Metro: "It was the only logical outcome to an increasingly outlandish plotline and character arc. To have carried on with the whole Carrie and Brody love affair would have been real torture to watch."

What did you make of Brody's death? Let us know in the comments below.
