Primal Scream’s guitarist Robert ‘Throb’ Young has died, the band’s publicist has confirmed.

He played guitar on their breakthrough album ‘Screamadelica’ - which was eventually honoured with the first ever Mercury Music Prize.

Among the classic hits he played on, included ‘Movin’ On Up’ and ‘Loaded’.

After staying with the band for a number of years, Robert left Primal Scream in 2006 to deal with. what was described at the time, as “personal issues”.

Since then, frontman Bobby has said that he doubted if Robert would ever return to the Scottish rock group, telling Drowned In Sound last year: “Robert Young’s an incredible musician, an incredible talent. One of the most talented people I’ve ever known."

"I grew up with Robert and I love him like a brother," he added. "But we don’t see him any more. I don’t think anybody does.

“I don’t really know what’s happening there. I don’t think he’s making music now. But I wish he was because he’s super talented.”

There has so far been no official statement from Primal Scream, but a number of celebrities have paid their respects to him on Twitter, with Liam Gallagher leading the online tributes:
