Professor Stephen Hawking has said that he’s “proud” of Eddie Redmayne, after he won the Best Actor gong at the Oscars on Sunday night.
Eddie portrays the theoretical physicist in the biopic, ‘The Theory Of Everything’, a role that earned him his first Academy Award during the awards ceremony this weekend.

Writing on his official Facebook page, Professor Hawking shared his joy at the British actor’s victory, saying: “Congratulations to Eddie Redmayne for winning an Oscar for playing me in ‘The Theory Of Everything’.
“Well done Eddie, I'm very proud of you.”

Eddie triumphed over fellow Brit Benedict Cumberbatch and ‘Birdman’ actor Michael Keaton to earn his Best Actor gong, and was so happy with his win that he audibly squealed after his name was announced.
He had been widely tipped to scoop the Oscar after sweeping the board this awards season, taking home a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Bafta for his part in ‘The Theory Of Everything’.

Professor Hawking has previously been full of praise over Eddie’s portrayal of him, admitting that he shed a tear when he first saw the film, telling The Independent last year: “At times I thought he was me. I think Eddie’s commitment will have a big emotional impact."
Eddie dedicated his win to sufferers of Motor Neurone Disease, telling the audience at the Oscars: “This Oscar belongs to all of those people around the world battling ALS.”
