The original series of the weekly chart countdown ran for over 40 years, before being eventually shelved in 2006.

However, with a number of British acts like Sam Smith, Rita Ora and Ed Sheeran all doing well in the charts - and the announcement the weekly pop chart will soon be announced on a Friday instead of a Sunday - The Mirror have claimed that the show could be about to make a comeback.

A source tells the newspaper: “‘Top Of The Pops’ is a great brand name and the BBC are keen to use it. Some at the highest level are massive supporters of the plan and have given the go-ahead.

“The new Friday night charts could be the perfect tie-in - with ‘Top Of The Pops’ a brilliant start to the weekend.”

Last month, Dermot confirmed that he would not be returning to ‘The X Factor’, after eight years with the show, while Fearne announced weeks earlier that she was stepping down from her Radio 1 slot.

The source continues: “Dermot’s departure from ‘The X Factor’ is another piece of the jigsaw.

“Teaming him with Fearne would be a brilliant move. He already presents a popular Radio 2 show - fronting ‘Top Of The Pops’ is a logical step.”

Earlier this week, it was suggested that Dermot may have a future as a contestant on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, while he’s also been named one of the bookies’ top choices to replace Jeremy Clarkson on ‘Top Gear’.
