Gemma Collins is reportedly worried that a solo sex tape she has recorded could get out, while she’s in the ‘I’m A Celebrity’ jungle.

As if spiders, snakes and the perpetual company of Tinchy Stryder weren’t enough to keep GC up at night during her time Down Under, it’s now been claimed that she’s sick with worry that footage of a “selfie sex tape” might leak during her time in the reality series.

An unidentified “close friend” tells the Daily Star: “Gemma is beside herself with worry that this might get out.

“The last thing she wants is a private recording of her bedroom antics being put on the net for everyone to see.”

The newspaper have claimed that the private clip shows the ‘TOWIE’ star “pleasuring herself” on camera for one of her ex-boyfriends, but she’s now afraid it may have fallen into the “wrong hands”.

A spokesperson for Gemma simply told the Daily Star: “This is a private matter.”

This wouldn’t be the first time Gemma’s intimate snaps had been taken, after a picture of her ex-boyfriend and fellow ‘TOWIE’ cast member James ‘Arg’ Argent was stolen from her phone and posted online.

His representative said at the time: “It wasn't Gemma. Someone got hold of her phone and got the picture. It was never released intentionally.”

Lauren Goodger also had her own sex tape ordeal earlier this year, when a six-second clip of her performing a sex act on a former boyfriend was shared on mobile devices around Essex, shortly before she made her way into the ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ house.

Karren Brady Says Nigel Farage Makes Her 'Shudder'

$

Karren Brady, the Tory peer and star of The Apprentice, has said Nigel Farage makes her "shudder".

Brady, who took her seat in the House of Lords earlier this month, attacked Ukip for wanting to "turn the clock back" on women's rights. Brady hit out at Farage as she campaigned for Tory by-election candidate Kelly Tolhurst in Rochester on Friday.

Ukip is on course to win the seat next Thursday, with Tory defector Mark Reckless set to become the party's second ever elected MP. In an effort to limit the damage, the Tories are making much of Tolhurst's local roots and have also attacked Ukip's attitude towards women.

Brady said today: "When I read comments from Ukip MEPs saying that women 'don't have the ambition to go right to the top' and when Nigel Farage says women are 'worth less' in business I shudder. These are the attitudes that make women less likely to put themselves forward – just as we need more of the skills and insight they can bring.

"That's why I'd urge people not to send the wrong message at this by-election – don't support a party that wants to turn the clock back. Instead vote for Kelly - a strong local woman who has a clear plan to improve her community."

Last night Farage stood by previous comments in which he said women were "worth less" to some employers in the City if they took time off to have children. The Ukip leader told Channel 4 News yesterday he was talking about a specific part of the finance industry.

At the first by-election hustings in the Kent constituency, on 6 November, Tolhurst also made fun of Reckless' views of women. "I think Mark Reckless hasn't turned up today because he heard that the candidate for the Conservatives and the candidate for Labour are two strong women and that's what he is scared of," she said.

After a 10-year wait, S Club 7 finally reunited on Friday night, performing a medley of their hits during the BBC Children In Need telethon.

Led by Jo O’Meara, the band went on a whistlestop tour of their greatest hits, performing sections of ‘Reach’, ‘Don’t Stop Movin’ and ‘Bring It All Back’.

The band’s highly-anticipated comeback was one of the highlights of last night’s show and plenty of fans took to Twitter to share their excitement at seeing the S Club 7 performing together again - and they have plenty of celeb fans too.

Many S Club 7 fans are now hoping that the band will announce a full renunion tour.

Other highlights on the night included performances from One Direction - who sang two tracks in Albert Square, and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini.

The 'EastEnders' team also took part in the fundraising efforts, and Ian Beale took the lead role in one sketch, which saw him coming face-to-face with the ghosts from his past.

Ian Beale took centre stage in a special sketch for BBC Children In Need on Friday night, as ghosts from his past returned to ‘EastEnders’.

The struggling businessman hasn’t exactly had it easy on the show, so what could be better than visits from four of Albert Square’s most fabulous - and sadly now deceased - women?

Sorry, Peggy! Pat's in charge now...

After being knocked unconscious by Denise, Ian went on a journey through his time in Walford, which included chats with Cindy and his mum Kathy, whose new boyfriend really was something special.

A quick jaunt into the Queen Vic left Ian shocked, when he saw Pat Butcher behind the bar, but she couldn’t stick around for long due to plans with a certain Mr Harry Styles. Yes, you read that correctly.

Finally, back in the laundrette, Ian came face-to-face with his daughter Lucy, though sadly, she didn’t reveal her killer’s identity.

‘EastEnders’ bosses, we reckon you missed a trick there.

Other highlights on the night included performances from One Direction - who sang in Walford - and S Club 7’s long-awaited reunion, while the 'EastEnders' team are also selling a nude calendar to raise cash for charity.

Edwina Currie is set to arrive in Australia for ‘I’m A Celebrity...Get Me Out Here’, two years after describing the show as “ritual humiliation”.

According to The Sun, Edwina’s had a change of heart, after reportedly being offered £110,000 to sign up.

The paper states that bosses are hoping the former Tory minister dishes the dirt on her affair with John Major during her stay in the jungle.

When Nadine Dorries, a Tory MP, appeared on the show in 2012, Edwina was quick to criticise her, stating: “I don’t think she should be doing it.

“If Nadine seriously thinks they are going to allow her on to national TV on a game show like this talking about abortion, she’s got another think coming.”

A TV source has now told The Sun: “It is amazing that she [Edwina] has been convinced to do the show. She’s going to look a bit of a hypocrite now.

“Edwina is so opinionated there will definitely be fireworks in camp.”

At present, the confirmed ‘I’m A Celeb’ participants are all enjoying their last days of luxury, before leaving their lavish lifestyles behind for up to three weeks of rice and beans in the Aussie jungle.

‘TOWIE’ star Gemma Collins and Hugh Hefner’s former girlfriend Kendra Wilkinson are among this year’s celebrity campers.

The campers have already been split into two teams and fans can currently vote to decide who’ll go in the celebrity slammer upon arrival.

Viewers looking forward to seeing ‘bikini moments’ may be left disappointed though, as it’s been confirmed that the camp is currently overrun with leeches.

Russell Brand Urged By Fans To Denounce 'Pick-Up Artist' Julien Blanc

Sleazy so-called pick-up artist Julien Blanc appears to have been pictured posing with Russell Brand and has encouraged his fans to be more like the comedian - but now Brand's fans have hit back.

Although it has not yet been confirmed whether or not Brand was aware of who he was posing next to in picture, apparently taken 18 months ago and posted on the pick-up artist's Instagram, Blanc has made it clear he is a fan of the Hollywood star-turned political activist.

Daily Mail Australia obtained a recording - removed from Blanc's YouTube account - of a recent lecture entitled: "Russell Brand’s Secret to Having a Magnetic Personality: Get Flashed While Behaving Like a Rockstar."

russell brand

Brand has since been urged by his followers to denounce Blanc in a petition.

It states:

Russell Brand, thank you for protesting for social justice and calling for revolution. Did you know that sexual assault artist Julien Blanc has posted a picture of himself with you to try and gain support? We are writing to ask you to publically renounce Julien Blanc and the Real Social Dynamics organisation that in the guise of teaching men how to become a “pick up artist” promote sexual assault and racism.

Blanc can be heard telling his followers that the best way to stand out to women was to "do what most people wouldn't do and get away with it."

"If you take, like, any celebrity, like fucking, Russell Brand, for example, what does he do?

"He does the shit that most people wouldn't do.

"He pushes it a little bit further - that's it - and he gets away with it."

"You do that, you stand out."

The Huffington Post UK has contacted Brand for comment.

In the meantime, a Home Office minister has lobbied Theresa May to ban the US "pick-up artist" from entering the UK because of his "sexist and utterly abhorrent statements".

Thousands of people have already called on the Home Office to deny a visa to Blanc, who has been accused of directly exploiting "vulnerable men who buy into rape culture" by handing out dubious, and arguably sexually violent, techniques to woo women.

Lynne Featherstone said she had no doubts that if Blanc was allowed to perform in the UK, there would be an increase in "cases of sexual harassment and intimidation".

Blanc, who describes himself as the "international leader in dating advice" tours the world under the guise of helping men - all for a hefty fee.

julien blanc
Julien Blanc

In one YouTube video that has had more than 50,000 views, Blanc is filmed saying: “Just go through Tokyo, grab girls and yell ‘Pikachu’ and put her head on your dick."

Speaking to a room full of laughing men, Blanc comments about women in Japan: “If you’re a white male, you can do what you want. I’m just romping through the streets, just grabbing girls’ heads, just like, head, pfft on the dick.”

He also has a hashtag #ChokingGirlsAroundTheWorld, where he tweets footage of himself doing exactly that: choking women around the world.

And now he is due to arrive in the UK to hand out such advice.

Liberal Democrat minister Featherstone publicly raised her concerns and urged the Home Secretary to deny Blanc a visa.

The Crime Prevention Minister told the Guardian: "As the Home Office minister with responsibility for tackling violence against women and girls, I am extremely concerned by the sexist and utterly abhorrent statements Julien Blanc has made about women.

"If he was allowed to perform in the UK I have no doubt that cases of sexual harassment and intimidation would increase.

"Free speech is obviously hugely important, but with free speech comes responsibility. It is not appropriate to talk about choking girls under any circumstances."

Blanc works for Real Social Dynamics, a business that profits from what the Washington Post described as a "growing online subculture of men’s rights activists and pick-up artists."

The group charges £1,250 for bootcamps and between £120 and £330 for various dating 'services' packages and for this chunky sum he has the following guarantee: "Become a true 'pimp', with the highest abundance of hot women in the shortest amount of time, or your money back. No questions asked."

RSD's website is advertising a "bootcamp" to teach the firm's techniques in London starting on November 27.

“It’s Offensive, It’s Inappropriate, It’s Emotionally Scarring, BUT IT’S DAMN EFFECTIVE,” Blanc says of his techniques on his Web site, PimpingMyGame.com where he advises men on how to “develop panty-dropping masculinity”.

A petition on change.org calling for Blanc to be denied a visa has been signed by more than 120,000 people and he's already been turfed out of Australia, while Canada have also made it clear he's not welcome .

Australia's Immigration minister, Scott Morrison, revealed that Blanc’s visa was cancelled and he was forced to leave the country on Friday.

“This guy wasn’t putting forward political ideas, he was putting forward abuse that was derogatory to women and that’s just something, those are values abhorred in this country,” he told Sky News.

Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper has also written to May suggesting she should block Blanc from coming to the UK on the grounds his presence is "not conducive to the public good".

In the letter she said: "Promotional material on websites reportedly linked to Mr Blanc ... promise to 'teach' men how to overcome 'last-minute resistance' from women to having sex including 'teaching' how to 'bring her back from her logical mind, and into an emotional state'. Videos of Blanc apparently include footage of him grabbing women around the throat, as well as instructing men to use physical force to get women to engage with them."

Cooper went on: "Why should we let someone into this country to incite sexual assaults or violence against women? Australia has already sent this man home. Canada want to keep him out. There is plenty of evidence of Mr Blanc's vile views and misogynist business, and no interest for Britain in him being able to promote them here in our communities.

"The Home Office need to investigate him urgently. Theresa May should be able to exercise sensible border control and stop him holding these seminars in our country."

A Home Office spokesman said: "The Home Secretary has the power to exclude an individual if she considers that his or her presence in the UK is not conducive to the public good.

"It is long-standing practice that we do not comment on individual exclusion cases unless they are made public by the excluded individual.

"This Home Secretary has excluded more foreign nationals on the grounds of unacceptable behaviour than any before her."

Sarah Green from the End Violence Against Women coalition told The Guardian that there was a strong legal case for not allowing Blanc a temporary work visa for the UK.

“Some of the behaviour Blanc demonstrates in his videos amounts to sexual harassment and sexual assault,” she said.

“More broadly this is part of a culture that makes light of assault, that tells victims they will not be taken seriously. We need a social conversation about why this type of ‘advice’ is commercially viable.”

The latest sexism row follows "lad comedian" Dapper Laughs having his controversial dating advice show, "On The Pull", axed by ITV last week after a furious public backlash.

The move followed a petition being supported by over 50,000 people to remove the comedian, real name Daniel O'Reilly from TV.

An ITV spokesman said: "We have given careful thought to the recent criticism of the character Dapper Laughs, which has focused on his activities outside of the ITV2 programme, whose content was carefully considered and complied. We have taken the decision that we will not be considering this show for a second series."

Lee Evans Reveals Depression Battle: ‘I Get Very Gloomy, Dark, Deep And Depressed'

Comic Lee Evans has opened up about his battle with depression, revealing that he gets depressed “every single day”.

While the comedian is well-known for making the nation laugh and smile, he’s revealed that he often struggles with feeling “gloomy”, adding that performing helps him to feel better.

Lee Evans

Speaking to The Sun, Lee explains that he oftens feels depressed, stating: “Not on the outside, but at home I do. I get very gloomy and dark, very deep and depressed.

“Everyone does sometimes, don’t they? I can sit there for ages, with my head in my hands.”

The Essex-born comic also reveals the reasons behind his depression, adding: “It’s mostly out of being criticised, because then I don’t feel worthy and slope off on my own.”

“But then I’ll do a show and the audience reaction is humbling and I say to myself, ‘Come on, sort yourself out.’”

Lee’s revelation comes months after the death of Robin Williams, who secretly battled depression, while his hilarious films were celebrated worldwide.

While he was performing in a London Comedy Club, Lee worked met Robin on a number of occasions and he’s also shared his thoughts on the actor’s tragic death.

“It’s such a shame he’s gone. He was really lovely, with an enormous amount of pathos,” he states. “I guess he was a case in point, where somebody is trapped in their own little bubble and just wants to be liked, to be accepted.

“Comedy is all about that, it comes from fear.

“I fear everything. Darkness, light, fear of insecurity, fear of women, fear of conversation... I suppose there’s a mad side to me. You can tell that from my act, can’t you?”

Lee isn’t the first star to bravely speak publicly about their battle with depression, and earlier this year, Fifi Geldof opened up about her struggles. Comedian Ruby Wax has also revealed her private battle with depression.

‘X Factor' Review: Fleur East Leads The Pack In Big Band Week As Jay James And Ben Haenow Face Criticism (VIDEO)

Saturday night’s ‘X Factor’ saw the acts take on a variety of huge tracks for Big Band week, though sadly, not everyone received positive comments from the judges.

MORE 'X FACTOR':

Andrea Faustini, who rarely disappoints was tasked with opening the show and got things off to a great start with a powerful rendition of ‘Summertime’, originally by George Gershwin and DuBose Heyward.

However, while Cheryl Fernandez-Versini labelled his performance “amazeballs", Simon wasn’t so kind and told him: “It lacked that gritty passion which you need with that song.

“I thought it was going to go somewhere and it didn't... and you're pulling these terrible faces, like you're in pain."

Next up was Lauren Platt, who continues to improve week-on-week, with a performance of Nat King Cole’s ‘Smile’, and her vocal abilities were praised, with Mel B labelling them “flawless” while Louis Walsh told Lauren she’s always “note perfect”.

Jay James’ New York-themed mash-up was the first performance of the night to face serious criticism, with Mel declaring that Simon had done him “a disservice.”

After yet more drama with song choices, the first of Louis’ groups Stereo Kicks pulled off a strong performance of the classic ‘Mack The Knife’, and once again, the other judges criticised the band’s mentor for making last minute changes.

“To have a song changed the night before and have eight of you rearrange the song is hard,” Cheryl told them. “I feel each week you're coming up with a problem, but I have to applaud you guys."

Ben Haenow’s ‘Cry Me A River’ also received mixed responses, however, Only The Young continue to go from strength-to-strength, and the whole panel commended their version of ‘I Wanna Be Like You’, with simon revealing that its baby Eric’s favourite song.

“You just know who you are,” Mel added. “I have a 3-year-old, a 7-year-old and a 15-year-old and they all love you. You make me smile. I'd go to your concert any day."

Cheesy Stevi - yes, he’s still in the competition - continues to flumox everyone, however as Louis pointed out after his rendition of ‘Mambo No.5’ and ‘She Bangs’, viewers obviously still love him.

Finally, the task of closing the show fell to Fleur East, who performed ‘Bang Bang’, a track that was showcased on a Sunday results show earlier in the series by Jessie J.

While Jessie’s solo version of the song misses out the rap, Fleur relished the challenge and stole the show with her all-rapping, all-dancing performance.

“It's very simple - we saved the best for last,” Louis told her. “You grow and grow every week. We're looking for a star, someone to sell records. You are that."

Tonight, another act will leave the competition, Simon still has all four of his hopefuls remaining, while Cheryl is down to just one act.

Saturday night’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ saw the competition taken up a gear, as the remaining hopefuls relocated to Blackpool’s iconic ballroom.

There were a number of impressive performances on the night, but Pixie Lott and Simon Webbe managed to pip everyone to the post, topping the leaderboard.

After performing her Paso Doble, the singer was described as “almost invincible” by Craig Revel-Horwood, who is notoriously difficult to impress, while Len Goodman stated: “If you were a stick of Blackpool rock, you’d have talent written right through you. Wonderful performance.”

The judges also had plenty of kind words for Simon Webbe, who matched Pixie’s score of 38 with his impressive Argentine Tango.

Sadly, not everybody managed to impress - yes Judy, we mean you.

We love Judy as much as the next person, but it’s fair to say her dancing abilities are limited and Craig didn’t hold back when it came to criticising her Viennese Waltz.

“The posture was appalling,” he said. “You had a good 15 seconds in there and it was definitely your personal best.” Ouch.

Judy has been open during her time on the competition, and recently stated that she thinks every week will be her last.

Saturday’s show was presented by Zoe Ball and according to reports, Claudia Winkleman may not return for the remainder of the series.

The X Factor 2014 Big Band

$
0
0
This week, the remaining eight acts will be pushed to their vocal limit. It's just them and a thirty piece big band. They need to show amazing stage presence. It's time to separate the weak from the strong. No pressure then.

Last weekend, in a shock exit, Paul Akister left the competition and nine became eight.

Dermot has danced his grand entrance, the judges are in place, it's time to get the trombones out...

Britain's favourite, Italian Andrea, kicked us off and their is no doubting his vocal ability, in fact it's world class BUT many people have said to me that they are getting put off by his face pulling. Cheryl said, "you brought that to life" Simon said, "you are pulling these terrible faces."....eh hold on.

Lauren Platt is another singer who is amazing, a little pop star but for the first time in the whole series, I started to get bored. It reminded me of Diana Vickers' performances in 2008 who, for the record did it better. Louis said, "you are a born recording artist" Simon said, "it was a bit boring." look, do you have my script Simon?

Bottom two survivor Jay James, is in need of a big week and took on a classic, (New York New York). As I said at the start of this review, big band week finds people out. I didn't like it. Mel B said, "vocally that wasn't on point." Cheryl said, "you sang with an American accent."

Stereo Kicks are an enigma, one week good, the next not so and I still couldn't tell you what half their names are. That is not a good sign at this stage. Saying that, I do like them and vocally tonight, they were bang on. Mel B, "I still feel like I don't know you." Louis said, "their performance was amazing."

Team Midas entered the stage with the amazing Ben Haenow. Look, every week Ben takes on the theme and every week he nails it. That is called the X Factor, some would even call it world class. Mel B said, "it was a good performance and a good delivery." Simon said, "It was honest, it was cool, it made you show you are a versatile artist."

The fab four aka Team Midas' Only The Young are fast becoming the dark horse. They delivered another watchable, fun and entertaining performance. Vocally bang on again and as for the dancing. Wow. One of the acts of the night. The show would be very boring without them. Mel B said, "my kids harp on and on about you, you make me smile." Simon said, "you are fun, you are unique, you know your market."

Stevi Richie was next. Well, the once fun factor has now become the annoying factor. Vocally poor and I couldn't wait for it to finish. Next. Louis said, "for some reason the public are voting for you." Mel B, "I just don't get it." Join the club.

I love Fleur East, she has everything. The complete whole package. Fleur looks and sounds great and she now has a real chance of reaching the Final. Another act who would be huge miss if they were to leave the show. Cheryl said, "you are an all rounder." Simon said, "you could win this competition."

In a few short hours another act leaves the show...people of the UK it's over to you.

Right, I'm off to play with my trumpet...see you next week.

Either she was channeling Angelina Jolie’s iconic “leg bomb”, or four years in the entertainment industry have taken their toll and she's fellen under the influence of stars like Rihanna and Lady Gaga by showing us her racier side.

Could a Kim Kardashian-esque “break the Internet” photo shoot really be far off?

It’s been a great year for the former ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ star, who released her sixth album, featuring covers of John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ and Paul Simon’s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ back in October.

She also embarked on her first tour, which kicked off with 19 dates around the UK, before heading Stateside to play at concert halls around America.

However, in our eyes her biggest achievement of the year has to be her ALS Ice Bucket Challenge video, where she managed to breathe some new life into a tired and repetitive video format, thanks to her charm… and her fabulous “cossie”, of course.

"IT'S NOT WHAT YOU SPEND, IT'S WHAT YOU SAY": Movie-Marketing by Brilliant Example

$
0
0
The Jazz Singer. 1927. A major commercial hit for Warner Brothers and a motion picture watershed. The 'talkies' had arrived, 'the silent movie' bowed into the shadows, and into the 1930's and 40's stepped the likes of Citizen Kane, Walt Disney, Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Hitchcock, Kapra and Casablanca. The 'Golden Age' of cinema.

Movie lovers could debate long into the night whether the 1970's represented a second kind of 'Golden Age' - and debate could further rage as to whether we're currently witnessing a third Golden Age of cinema.

Consider this century. We've had Gravity and Avatar and the ever-expanding Marvel universe; Jack Sparrow and Disney finding their mojo with Frozen; Pixar's Nemo, Buzz and Woody; Nolan's Batman; Bourne and Bond rebooted; and The Potter, Hobbit and Hunger Games franchises.

Of the current 19 highest grossing films of all time (those being movies with a worldwide box office over the magic $1bn), 16 of those movies have been this millennium. Within the top 40 highest grossing movies of all time, only 4 movies date before 2000. Of course, not adjusting for inflation and the increasing cost of cinema tickets biases these numbers - but irrespective of adjustments, we are seeing the expenditure of much gold up there on our silver screens, and a global movie industry where the stakes and investments have never been higher.

JUST IMAGINE

Making a movie is seldom, if ever, cheap. Even those indie breakthroughs like Clerks and Blair Witch involved real people fronting their very real money. And at the other end of the spectrum, you have evermore annual tent poles rising on production budgets (un)comfortably north of $175m dollars. In support of that investment, you may well see some part (poster, trailer etc) of a global marketing campaign that cost a figure similar to production.

Imagine a $400m exposure? Just imagine you've cut all those cheques, while your brainpan itches with the recollection of how Disney took a $200m hit on John Carter - or you think farther back to movies like Heaven's Gate and Ishtar, or Catwoman and Cutthroat Island? The wrong kind of pirates can fail, Halle Berry in a figure-hugging cat suit is no guarantee, and even casting Matthew McConaughey and having him take his shirt off still might not turn out as 'awright' as hoped. 2005's Sahara generated a relatively strong $122m box office... but cost over $241m to make. No one builds a career on those kinds of ratios.

The reality is that 'too big to fail' is no kind of logic, and that movies can tank for all kinds of reasons. Even good ones. Timing is one key variable.

Hard to believe, but It's a Wonderful Life was a loss-maker for RKO on its release in 1946. It went up against Miracle on 34th Street and The Best Years of Our Lives. Easier to believe, World War 2 reduced Hollywood's international release market by 60%. In consequence MGM's The Wizard of Oz and Walt Disney's Pinocchio, Fantasia and Bambi all underperformed.

Now for the good news. The cautionary tales are instructive, and while there's no sure-fire way to snare lightening in a bottle, movie-marketing is being invited to experiment and express like never before.

BY BRILLIANT EXAMPLE

During a recent interview in The Hollywood Reporter, Tomas Jegeus (co-president of worldwide marketing and distribution at 20th Century Fox) acknowledged, "the increasing cost (of marketing a movie) is a massive challenge. Yet it's not how much you spend", he added, "it's the message. If we don't have the message right, nothing else matters". Ultimately, Jegeus is talking to the fine art of knowing exactly what and what not to say.

In the case of Fox's Gone Girl, Jegeus exampled, "We couldn't allude to the twist, so we couldn't tell half the story. We focused the whole campaign on Ben Affleck's character. Once the movie opened, we decided we could say more."

This summer's Gone Girl campaign was a treat. The proposition was perfectly judged and crafted, and of all the creative assets, the 'Evidence bags' posters (promoting the July 7 trailer) were further evidence of 'transmedia marketing' as it can be done.

2014-11-17-GoneGirl.jpg

Boil it right down, and movie-marketing is all about the WHAT, WHERE and WHEN.

WHAT to say (message and execution).
WHERE to say it (media).
And WHEN (timing).

But that's not to say marketing a movie is easy. Far from it.

This summer's Edge of Tomorrow (make that: Live Die Repeat) provided vivid example of how a studio initially got the message wrong, and later marketed it right.

The title, Edge of Tomorrow, did the movie no favours. It sounds bland. Translate it into other languages, and it barely makes sense (not that it makes that much sense in English). Then compare its final theatrical poster work with Tom Cruise's previous dystopic/sci-fi/blockbuster, Oblivion.

2014-11-17-Cruise.jpg

Audiences could be forgiven for thinking it was the same movie. Which is all a shame, because both movies are very good.

'Live. Die. Repeat.' however is a great (central premise) tag line, which became ever-larger in creative executions as Warner Brothers' campaign progressed. For the movie's Home Ent digital and disc release, the tag line had usurped the original title, effectively becoming the far better title.

The happy lesson in this is that it's not necessarily too late to tactically adjust.

Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey is another example of how they ultimately - rather than initially - got the messaging right.

In 1968, 2001 polarised critics. Some gushed. Others just didn't get it, and audiences initially inclined to the latter. On the basis of poor early box office, MGM were going to pull the movie. Exhibitors however reported to MGM that 2001 was gaining popularity with younger audiences, some of whom were eschewing popcorn in favour of "funny cigarettes" and LSD as they tripped their way through the movie's psychedelic star gate sequence at the end of the second act.

In response, MGM marketing conceived a tactical poster months after the initial release: '2001: The ultimate trip'. You can see how the movie's poster work evolved, the early illustrative work then inculcating the tactical creative, culminating in later theatrical posters that re-positioned the movie.

2014-11-17-2001.jpg

Whether 1968, 2001, or 2014, the delivery of What, Where and When requires invention and playfulness. How you tease. What you reveal. When you reveal it. What you hold back.
As a piece of compelling articulation, I'm a huge fan of Studio Canal's tagline for The Imitation Game. "The true Enigma was the man who cracked the code."

Churchill famously described Russia as "a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma." The description could as easily stand for what the best teaser marketing looks to achieve.

I absolutely loved the 50" teaser for this Autumn's Nightcrawler. It's a character portrait. A perfectly honed, performed and edited piece of content in its own right; the thinnest slice of a movie you can't wait to feast on.

And while Nightcrawler's later official trailer ably did what it had to do, I wondered whether it fell into the trap of so many final trailers, of showing and telling too much of the movie to come? Trailers are at their weakest when they become über-abridged versions of the final cut they're promoting. They are at their best when we're left still wanting.

Left 'still wanting' is certainly what the recent trailer for Eastwood's 2015 American Sniper achieves. Like the Nightcrawler teaser, it's a 'standalone' piece of content, a 1 min 40 scene that hurls you instantly into the moment, positing, "What would you do?"

This October, the final trailer for the independently produced Keanu Reeves actioner John Wick also played a blinder. Where 47 Ronin was a poorly marketed Last Samurai/Airbender mash-up that compelled few, John Wick was the very opposite: a Death Wish style/80's throwback that plays it deadpan, while knowing exactly what it is and how it's ironic.

The Wrap hailed the R-rated action thriller "a financial coup for Lionsgate's Summit Entertainment, taking $14.1 million in its opening weekend, double the projection of some analysts and more than $5 million better than the debut of Reeves' 2013 mega-bomb 47 Ronin."

John Wick was the right message. And it supported a smart theatrical window. When Fox's Colin Firth spy thriller "Kingsman: The Secret Service" pushed its Oct 24 release to next February, Lionsgate pounced. "That opened up this weekend", explained Lionsgate's Richie Fay, "when the main competition would be Ouija, which skewed young and female -- the opposite of the demo target for John Wick."

Lionsgate should also consider adding actress Elizabeth Banks to their marketing payroll. Check out her (pro)activity on Instagram and Twitter in the build up to Mocking Jay Part 1. Bank's considerable ability to independently promote the movie's she stars in can only strengthen any decision to cast her. Patrick Stewart obliquely spoke to this very point in his address at this year's Cannes Lions. Stewart and McKellan's use of Twitter to gain following and ultimately draw attention to their Broadway play was an exercise in celebrity (re)branding and broadening your consumer base.

A few well-judged tweets and it turns out Professor X and former USS Enterprise captain is one self-deprecatingly comic guy. Who knew? Very few, until Patrick Stewart showed us.

And no mention of this year's star turns would be complete without mention of Marvel, and how one supervillain's act of sabotage can be another superheroes' viral 'pheno-meme'.

The most popular movie trailer of all time was a trailer no one was meant to see. Marvel's 'leaked' Age of Ultron teaser was up to 45m views after 6 days and provided the perfect drum roll ahead of the studio's October 28th Phase 3 announcement: a 9 movie batch over the next 5 years. There are certainly no strings on studio president Kevin Feige.

Of course, The Avengers is an established franchise with a strong and simple premise. But the point is that any premise is only strong and simple once you've made it that way. Genre-busting films like Blade Runner and Donnie Darko generated dismal initial box office because they got the better of the marketing minds that failed to effectively position and articulate them.

Back in 1964, it would have been just as easy to get the message wrong with Sergio Leone's ground-breaking A Fistful of Dollars. Instead, United Artists struck gold. 'The Man with No Name' was a piece of pure marketing invention that gave mystique and cohesion to the spaghetti western franchise.

Fifty years later, and the 50 Paddington bear statues around London to promote the forthcoming movie is a similar act of marketing genius - the evocation of an iconic character that adds extra charm to the streets of London at Christmas time, as well as generating income for the NSPCC.

GOLDEN OPPORTUNITIES

In the movie industry, 'entertainment' is the thing of manufacture. There's an investment in a tangible product, which everyone involved in the making hopes will sell. But hope is not enough and selling a movie is no fair-weather, plain-sailing task.

On the one hand, you have audience fragmentation, spiralling media costs, and an audience's tech-assisted ability to edit and ignore. On the other (which is where it gets exciting), you have a digital playing field, transmedia story-telling, and the potential to grab pop culture by the throat.
A third Golden Age of cinema may be hotly debated, but movie-marketing is being granted opportunities that are surely golden enough.

Julien Blanc Offered Support From Katie Hopkins As Petition To Ban Him From Britain Grows

Julien Blanc’s plans to perform in Britain have been met with a wave of hostility, but the self-proclaimed “professional pick-up artist” can count on at least one person to support his entry into the UK.

And that person is obviously, Katie Hopkins.

American Blanc has been accused of directly exploiting “vulnerable men who buy into rape culture” with arguably sexually violent techniques to “woo” women (including pedalling the hashtag #ChokingGirlsAroundTheWorld, where he tweets footage of himself doing exactly that.)

Home Office minister Lynn Featherstone has lobbied Theresa May to ban him from entering the UK, and thousands have signed a petition calling for him to be refused a visa.

Hopkins, who has been branded a "rape apologist" for her defence of convicted rapist Ched Evans and comedian Dapper Laughs, tweeted: “Next up – plans to ban a bloke from the UK as we are frightened of what he will say to people paying to see him.”

Blanc’s “material” includes one filmed seminar where he tells a room full of laughing men: “At least in Tokyo, if you’re a white male, you can do what you want. I’m just romping through the streets, just grabbing girls’ heads, just like, head, pfft on the dick. Head, on the dick, yelling, ‘pikachu,’ with a Pikachu shirt.”

julien blanc
Julien Blanc

The 25-year-old works for Real Social Dynamics, a business that profits from what the Washington Post described as a "growing online subculture of men’s rights activists and pick-up artists."

Hopkins’s tweet – which did not name Blanc but included a picture of him - was largely met with confusion, with many admitting they did not know who he is.

But Dani Bunyan did recognise him, tweeting to Hopkins: “Nothing cool about sexual or physical assault on women, that’s exactly what he promotes. As well as emotional control/ abuse.”

The petition to ban Blanc from entering the UK asks the Home Office to issue a “banning order”, which can be made if a person’s presence is deemed to not be “conducive to the public good”.

The power is often used on those who glorify terrorism. In 2009, the Home Office revealed 16 of 22 people barred over six months were "hate preachers". But the government quickly dropped this policy of naming and shaming.

Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has already written to Theresa May, urging her to bar Blanc. But some felt it was too extreme to place a "pick up artist" on the same list as hate preachers.

Guardian columnist Marina Hyde wrote a ban could guarantee Blanc "twice the coverage" for his seminars.

"Bans turn ranting clerics you’ve never heard of into ones you suddenly never stop hearing about," she said.

"He could simply hire a London venue and be beamed in from the States – and get twice the coverage off the back of it.

"His followers – who we can only surmise already suffer from feelings of alienation or they wouldn’t need to pay him huge sums to help get them laid – will feel even greater solidarity with their outcast overlord. He’ll be a pick-up martyr."

'I'm A Celebrity': Australian Heat Wave Leaves Producers 'On Red Alert' Over Campmates' Safety

Producers on ‘I’m A Celebrity’ have been forced to keep an extra close eye on this year’s contestants, as record high temperatures have made conditions in the camp even more grueling than usual.

SEE MORE:

Australia is currently experiencing a heat wave, with temperatures reaching 45 degrees on Sunday, the hottest November day on record since 1968.

As a consequence, ‘I’m A Celeb’ bosses are having to pay extra attention to the campmates, who are already feeling the strain after just one day in the jungle.

Conditions in the 'I'm A Celeb' jungle are reportedly pushing the celebs to the limit

A show insider told The Mirror: “The celebrities are already in meltdown and we’ve barely started. This will be the toughest series ever to survive, we are on red alert to make sure no one becomes seriously ill in there.

“The camp has had the worst possible start with freak high temperatures. It has made everyone tired and weak, it is pretty unbearable. We had to take special action to make sure no one got sunstroke which could have seen them pull out of the show.”

Things got off to a shaky start for one campmate in particular during Sunday night’s launch, after ‘TOWIE’ star Gemma Collins was reduced to a nervous wreck on her way into the outback.

Gemma has already threatened to quit the series, after breaking down into hysterical tears in the helicopter that took her to camp.

Luckily for her, she was spared from the first Bushtucker Trial of the series, which saw former motorbike racer Carl Fogarty take on a pipe full of snakes for a full 12 minutes.

Mark Ellen Remembers The Tension At Original Band Aid Recording In 1984, And Who Finally Broke The Ice

Band Aid 30 goes on sale today, with Bob Geldof telling everyone, “It doesn’t matter if you don’t like it. Just buy it.”

The weekend saw fans of One Direction, Ellie Goulding, Ed Sheeran, all sharing pictures on social media of the stars arriving at the famous Sarm Studios in Notting Hill, clamouring to hear who was singing what, who’d turned up, more controversially, who hadn’t.

Flash back 30 years, and Band Aid was an entirely more casual affair, consisting of Bob Geldof simply hitting the phone to his mates, and telling them where to be and when. No arguments.

Band Aid 1984 - 38 towering egos in a room. What could go wrong?

“Bob knew Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and all the pop gang very well because of Paula Yates and The Tube,” remembers Mark Ellen, rock journalist who was editor of 'Smash Hits' at the time, and one of the few reporters allowed into the studios on the day.

“He was also in with the old rock and roll guard because he was a bit older than them (the popsters). His career itself was very much floundering, Boomtown Rats hadn’t had a hit for four years, so he was no threat to anybody and he was immensely liked. He was very clever, very forceful in the way he got people to cooperate.”

Following Bob’s persuasive phone calls, a bunch of disparate artists - Sting, Bono, George Michael among them - all rolled up at the studio early on the morning of Sunday 25 November, where Bob and Ultravox frontman Midge Ure were holding court. Mark describes the Duran mob arriving “in ski gear, goggles and all, strange” and the Spandau boys “with a bodyguard each, for a charity single”.

band aid
Each person stepping up to sing was like watching a penalty shoot-out, according to journalist Mark Ellen

According to Mark, there was a strange tension in the air, not only because of so many stars in one room, but because they’d all been freely slamming each other in the press in the months before.

“In 1984, pop music was a huge, high-earning, bank-rolling industry,” he recalls. “Records sold in gigantic quantities, there seemed to be room for everyone, and so there were millions of bands all at war with each other.

Paul Weller used to be massively acerbic about everybody else, he was very opinionated, hated all the glam pop of Spandau Ballet and Duran, and now here he was in a room surrounded by everyone he’d been so horrible about in the press.

band aid
It was Jon Moss who broke the ice, running up to fellow drummer Phil Collins and shouting 'You're my hero'

“Meanwhile, old guard like Status Quo were often rather rubbished by the young guard even though, at the time, they were probably only about 35, only about 10 years older, but that’s a century in pop years. “

Mark Ellen remembers it being one person in particular who broke the ice – Jon Moss, drummer with Culture Club.

“He suddenly ran up and threw his arms around Phil Collins, and shouted, ‘you’re my hero’ and suddenly the atmosphere in the room got much warmer.”

Of course, Jon’s bandmate Boy George was causing ripples of his own – with his absence, despite Bob Geldof’s impassioned phone calls.

band aid
A true superstar knows how to make a late entrance

“He was a superstar in 1984, and Bob phoned him and said, ‘Where are you?’” remembers Mark. “The answer was New York. And Bob ranted, ‘Why aren’t you here?’ and so he got out of bed.

“Thank goodness for supersonic travel. George eventually turned up at about 6pm, with bright crimson hair and went straight up and did his vocals. But not before he’d had a huge glass of brandy.”

This weekend’s press saw Status Quo veteran Francis Rossi revealing that he’d brought his own contribution to making the party go with a swing – a little offering that might have required his own ski goggles, and could explain what happened when he encountered on Mark Ellen at the end of the day.

“Francis Rossi came up to me as I was leaving,” remembers Mark. “He told me he’d just been recording the chorus.

“Francis carried on, ‘Weird really, 38 people in a room, all singing Feed the Welsh.’”

After appearing in ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ and its seemingly never-ending spin-offs, Kim Kardashian has become a pro at reality telly, so it’s no great surprise to hear she’s about to make a guest appearance on the Indian version of ‘Celebrity Big Brother’.

SEE MORE:

A statement from Colors, the entertainment channel which ‘Bigg Boss’ airs on, said: “Namaste India… Main Kim Kardashian aa rahi hoon India.. Bigg Boss ke ghar mein.”

Sadly our long list of skills - which includes plate-spinning and eating an entire tin of Quality Street in one sitting - do not stretch to speaking Hindi, but thankfully a quick Google translate could tell us: “Hello India, I am Kim Kardashian and I am coming to the ‘Bigg Boss’ house.”

Kim is about to visit India for the first time, and while she’s there she’ll be appearing in the ‘Bigg Boss’ house as a “guest, to interact with the contestants”.

Among the celebrity housemates taking part in the current, eighth series of ‘Bigg Boss’ are Nigaar Khan, an Indian actress who also famously appeared in a reality series with her famous sisters.

We’re sure she and Kim will find something in common to talk about.

At least the ‘Bigg Boss’ house will give Kim somewhere to hide out until the furore surrounding her most recent nude photo-shoot dies down. If it ever does, that is.

Previous guests to drop in on the ‘Bigg Boss’ house in years gone by include Pamela Anderson and reality star Jade Goody, who received the devastating phone call to tell her that she cervical cancer while she was in the house.
