Will Someone Tell the TV Industry That Not All Northerners Are Gruff, Golden Hearted Diamonds?

$

0
If I was black I'd be pretty wary of television drama. Unlike white actors, who get cast as a range of people, you tend to get "the black guy" - not a character but a cipher, a stereotype: a gangsta, a charmer, a yardie, a ladies' man, a dealer, pusher, pimp...

Why does the casting of someone non-white have to be so pre-meditated, have to stand for something? Why is it often brought in to fulfil a quota or to make a social point? I ask this because such typecasting isn't just confined to race. Middle-aged women get cast as mothers. Gay people must be queeny or bitchy - or both. Country folk come off as simple-minded Thomas Hardy fantasies. And Northerners. Yeah, them too. Because anyone with a twang of the North in them is gritty, right? They're gruff and taciturn, but they get things done. They swear a lot - no harm meant! - but their hearts are in the right place. Bless 'em.

This week the latest project of acclaimed TV writer Paul Abbott, he of Cracker and Shameless fame, comes to an end. Like much of Abbott's work, the cop drama No Offence has been hugely enjoyable - witty, fluid, densely plotted, with compelling turns from Joanna Scanlan, Will Mellor, Alexandra Roach, and just about the entire cast really. It's prime steak television and it'll probably win a prize or two. I'd recommend it to anyone.

But while the craft's flawless, there's something about the show that irks me. It irks me the same way Shameless, also set in Manchester, irked me, or Queer as Folk, or Coronation Street. Or, in fact, most TV drama about the North. What irks me is that stereotype - that enduring image of the Northerner. Gobby, sweary. Brusque but genuine. Bark's worse than their bite, salt of the earth, diamond in the rough, etc etc...

I'm not saying it's the worst stereotype there is. Cockney wide boy or Devon bumpkin are arguably more negative. But here's the thing: it's just not true. Manchester is not brimming with gruff but golden-hearted diamonds. It's as moody and complex as any major city. Go to the centre and it's filled with trendy cappuccino cafes. Go to the fringes and it's all glazed newbuilds and yuppiedromes. The locals may be a bit chattier than in London - where aren't they? - but they harbour pretensions like anywhere else. There's hipster snobbery to rival Dalston; even Coronation Street's Salford is remodelling itself as an arts Mecca.

And yet the stereotype persists, fuelled and re-fuelled by TV, that us Northerners are a gruff, coarse but "genuine" bunch who haven't any time for fancy nonsense.

Are Northerners really so simplistic? Not in my experience. Some of us are moody, haughty, subtle, sarcastic. Some of us are anything but genuine. Why would a change of accent and a punishing climate turn us all into warm-hearted simpletons and biscuit-dunking Gromits?

I say this because I've always resented the assumption that, because I've got a soft Northern accent, I'm somehow decent, honest, more "authentic". I'm none of these, and nor is anyone I admire. As a matter of fact my first move on reaching adulthood was to re-locate to the capital, where the things I associated with ambitious Londoners - ruthlessness, cunning, cultural edge - appealed to me far more than being some uncomplicated Northern gruff. Once you're in London you can barely see beyond Primrose Hill. Apart from trips home to visit family, I became a Southern snob who happened to be born in Yorkshire.

Now that I've grown up I'm glad to say I can see beyond such typecasting. I know now there are as many witty, cultured, erudite Northerners as gruff, gentle-hearted Southerners. But where's the TV to reflect it? Where are the Northern Alan Rickmans or Mr. Darcys? Can you imagine Benedict Cumberbatch with an accent from Bolton?

Give us some complex and classy characters, some Machiavellian anti-heroes. A cat-stroking supervillian from Dewsbury. A gallery director from Macclesfield. The North is a complex, nuanced and often conflicted place; surely that represents a better opportunity for good drama than recycling tired clichés. I'll doff my flat cap to anyone who manages it.

The Glastonbury weather forecasts are in, and depending on which one you read, things are not looking good.

SEE ALSO:

Some outlets are reporting that the site on Worthy Farm in Pilton will be turned into a mudbath thanks to the remnants of a tropical storm called Bill.

Both The Telegraph and BT report that while the festival while begin on Wednesday with sunshine and temperatures of 21 degrees, the rain will move in by Thursday night.

The Metro is a little more optimistic, reporting that while there will be showers on Friday, things are not “looking too drastic”.

However, the weather will stay changeable as we head into the weekend with scattered showers and sunny spells on Saturday and Sunday.

Daytime temperatures look set to stay between 18 and 21 degrees celsius for the duration of the five-day event.

Campers will be pleased to hear that they will be setting up their tents on dry ground though, as little rain is forecast between now and Wednesday.

Either way, we recommend packing your wellies AND your suncream, just in case.

Peter Andre is the latest star to put himself forward for the upcoming series of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, revealing that he’d love to hit the dancefloor “when the time is right”.

The singer is no stranger to reality TV, and has had a number of his own shows on ITV2, as well as starring in ‘I’m A Celeb’, where he famously met his future wife (and then ex-wife) Katie Price.

Speaking to OK! magazine, he explains: “It’s one of the best shows on telly and I do love to dance.

“I’m keen to give it a go when the time is right. I’m not sure I’d be able to pull off the Lycra outfits and sequins, though!”

We reckon Peter should definitely go for it - but only if he performs a routine to ‘Insania’. We’re pretty sure that can be written into his contract.

So far, a number of stars have put themselves forward for the upcoming series - but will any of them be as fab as the current champion Caroline Flack?

Earlier this month, Alan Titchmarsh revealed he’d like to get his dancing shoes on - though he did admit worries over being the ‘joke’ contestant - and ‘Corrie’ star Antony Cotton also fancies giving it a go.

Caitlyn Jenner shared a super cute family photo on Monday evening, after spending Father’s Day with some of her children.

Among them were Kim Kardashian and her husband Kanye West, who also took baby North along for the big day out, off-roading.

Caitlyn posted the happy snap on Twitter, adding the caption: “Great day yesterday for Father's Day. We had so much fun off-roading. So much love and support! Love my family!”

And, yes. That is a gigantic smile on Kanye’s face.

Khloe Kardashian and Kendall Jenner are also in the pic, along with Caitlyn’s sons Burt and Brandon, and their respective partners Valerie and Leah, who is expecting her first child.

This year’s Father’s Day was Caitlyn’s first since coming out as transgender, after previously living as Bruce Jenner.

A number of Caitlyn’s kids posted tributes to their parent on social media, including Kendall who shared a throwback snap with the caption: “my whole life this soul was my daddy and just because your appearance is different now doesn't mean you were any less of a father to me my entire life. happy Father's Day to the person who raised me, and taught me everything I know, my hero.”

Kylie, who isn’t in Caitlyn’s photo from the day off-roading, also shared a retro pic, writing: “Happy Father's Day my little light of sunshine. "You can still call me dad, Kylie. No matter what I'm always going to be your father. That's never going to change."

Caitlyn is currently busy filming scenes for her upcoming reality TV series, ‘I am Cait’, which is due to air on E! in July.

However, while her children are fully supportive of her transition, the Jenner contingent won’t be appearing in the show. There’s no word yet on whether Kim and her sisters will make any cameos.

Former ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ winner Chantelle Houghton has lashed out at current ‘BB’ champion Helen Wood, branding her a “nasty piece of work”.

Lat year's winner is currently back in the reality show house as part of a ‘Time Warp’ twist, but Chantelle believes that Helen should not have been invited back by producers.

Writing in her column in new! magazine, Chantelle said: “How on earth is Helen Wood a ‘BB' legend? She’s just a nasty piece of work.

"She seems to think that saying out loud whatever pops into her head makes her an honest and truthful person, when most of the time she’s just being insulting. She’s like a school bully and has managed to draw others into her nastiness.”

Chantelle also backed Brian Belo, following his rows with Helen in the house, adding: “Brian is a nice person with a good heart - and that’s something no one will ever say about Helen.”

Chantelle isn’t the only previous winner who is not impressed with Helen’s behaviour though, as ‘BB11’ champ Josie Gibson has also been airing her views on Twitter.

She tweeted after Brian and Helen’s row last week: “I find it so sad that housemates feel they need to be nasty to other housemates to earn air time... Is this really the world we live in?”

‘Celebrity Big Brother 9’ winner Denise Welch has also been vocal about Helen, following their public feud last year.

She tweeted: “It makes me feel ill to think of being in that house with Marc and Helen Wood. But I suppose they just 'tell it like it is'!! @bbuk.

“For anyone who may think Helen Wood is misunderstood, look at her Twitter feed when she's out,” she added.

All but one of the ‘Big Brother’ housemates will face eviction this Friday, following the last of the week's tag-team nominations.

SEE MORE:

Since Friday night, the group have been putting each other up for the public vote one by one, starting with Cristian MJC, who was chosen by Jade Lynch after she was evicted from the house.

On Tuesday, it was revealed that Danny Wisker was the last housemate to nominate, with just two of his fellow contestants - Nick Henderson and Chloe Wilburn - to choose between.

After being put on the spot by Big Brother, and asked to stand by the housemate he was nominating, Danny sprinted up the stairs to reveal he was choosing Nick, who, for some reason, was crouching in a corner, near the front door.

Danny explained: “I just think, as a mate, you should listen to my advice, and I think your relationship with Harry is getting serious too quick… especially in this small environment.

“You keep having your little arguments and stuff like that, and no one really wants to be around it. It brings a negative atmosphere to the house.”

Therefore, Chloe is the only housemate who won’t be facing eviction this Friday, with Danny and Nick up for the chop, alongside Cristian, Harry Amelia, Jack McDermott, Joel Williams, Sam Kay and Simon Gross.

Also not up for the public vote is Marc O’Neill who, in a convenient move for him, is still considered a ‘Time Warp’ housemate, and is therefore ineligible to nominate or be nominated.

Find out how Nick reacted to the news he’s been nominated in Tuesday’s ‘Big Brother’, airing at 10pm on Channel 5.

For Style, Classic One-Liners and Sheer Legend, 'Breakfast At Tiffany's' Wears the Crown

Whole industries and commercial ventures have been based on the 1961 romantic comedy Breakfast at Tiffany's. From posters, to copycat film promos, to T shirt slogans and even a hit music record, (The lines of dialog "How do I look?" "Very good. I must say, I'm amazed" and "I am a very stylish girl" were sampled in the Dimitri From Paris song "Une Very Stylish Fille").

2015-06-19-1434701900-5030750-RAHMAIN.jpg
Picture - Jasmine Dotiwala.

This past week London's Royal Albert Hall brought a new angle to the iconic film, with a live screening accompanied by the Philharmonia Film Orchestra accompanied by the Philharmonia Chorus, conducted by Justin Freer.

Conductor Justin Freer, who was leading the Philharmonia Film Orchestra, has produced, curated and conducted film-and-live-score shows for movies including Gladiator and The Godfather. Performing Henry Mancini's Breakfast at Tiffany's score at the iconic London venue was the culmination of a lifelong dream for the conductor, whose musical education was supported by a Mancini Scholarship.

The Royal Albert Hall has put on regular classic films with live orchestra's performing the soundtrack to the film, and this was one of its greatest pairings, as Henry Mancini's Academy Award-winning score lends itself to a big band, big experience, and big night.

This classic Blake Edwards film, based on Truman Capote's bestselling book stars Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly, a deliciously eccentric New York City call girl and socialite who catches the attention of her new neighbour, struggling writer Paul Varjak (George Peppard).

Regularly cited as one of the greatest movies ever made, it's also among the most stylish, with the sight of Holly - oversized cigarette holder in hand - one of the most clear-cut and distinct moments in cinema.

I'm always fascinated by the way Audrey Hepburn plays Holly Golightly, the craziest heroine who ever crept between the pages of a best-selling novel! That one-minute manic diva, the next the sweetest most vulnerable waif, makes me think she was certainly on some level bi-polar. Her salary for the film was $750,000, making her the highest paid actress per film at the time.

Watching the film, simultaneously to seeing the orchestra pick up their instruments every few scenes, to interpret Mancini's legendary score, is truly a once in a lifetime experience for a film and music aficionado.

As if the whole live experience wasn't already special enough, as a special treat for the audience, Mancini's daughter, double Grammy-nominated singer Monica Mancini, performed her father's Oscar-winning song Moon River at the start of the performance with her mother (Mancini's wife) Ginny watching sat just behind us!

Afterwards i was inspired to go and do some research about the movie.

The irony of this classic moment and song, is that the song "Moon River" was written especially for Audrey, and since she had no training as a singer the vocals were written to be sung in only one octave.

Yet it nearly didn't happen! It's said that when the film was first screened in Hollywood, at a post-production meeting that followed, a studio executive, in reference to "Moon River," had said, "Well, I think the first thing we can do is get rid of that stupid song." Apparently Audrey stood up at the table and said, "Over my dead body!" The song stayed. The rest as they say....

Back then Mancini had said, "It's unique for a composer to really be inspired by a person, a face or a personality, but Audrey certainly inspires me. Normally, I have to see a completed film before I'll compose the music, but with Tiffany I knew what to write for Audrey just by reading the script."

It's incredible to think how many fashionistas have been influenced by the style of Holly Golightly, who wears the same dresses all the way through the movie, simply changing the accessories to give each outfit a different look. Her black shift dress features through the movie at least four times. Also, no huge ageism in the screen industry back then clearly, as Holly is supposed to be just nineteen years old. Audrey was in fact thirty-one years old when playing Holly!

Interestingly, Audrey very nearly missed out on this ground breaking moment in her career though as originally author Truman Capote envisioned the Goddess Marilyn Monroe in the but Marilyn's drama coach, Lee Strasberg, told her that playing a call-girl was not good for her image. The film went on to be a huge success, with Audrey receiving Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations for Best Actress. Bet Marilyn kicked herself and cussed Lee!

Also although not visible on camera, hundreds of onlookers watched Audrey's window-shopping scene at the start of the film. Legend has it that this made her nervous and she kept making mistakes and It wasn't until a crew member nearly got electrocuted behind the camera that she pulled herself together and finished the scene.

Additionally, animal film stars were already in vogue back then (decades ahead of BGT Pudsey and Matisse!), with around nine stunt cats used throughout the film as the role of 'Cat'.

More post production trickery in the fact that Holly's whistle when she hails a cab for Paul was actually dubbed in. Audrey attempted to learn how to whistle with two fingers, but could never produce the desired sound. Whistling is a long forgotten art within itself!

At the end of the night, as an extra-special treat, we were treated to an encore over a montage of film stills, behind-the-scene images and shots of the team, whilst Monica Mancini once again sang and her mother, who was acknowledged by the conductor, stood up to applaud the moment.

All in all, a truly fabulous occasion, after which I really did feel like 'a very stylish girl'.

American Black Film Festival: A Conversation with Taraji P Henson

2015-06-21-1434924640-7700877-IMG_3793.JPG

This year's American Black Film Festival was as much about contemporary classics as it was about glam galas. By far the hottest ticket of the event was Empire star Taraji P Henson in conversation with Gayle King. Held in the Hilton Hotel's Grand Ballroom, which was only just big enough to accommodate Henson's legions of fans, the discussion was frank and revealing. For instance, I didn't know that Henson had originally gone to college to study electrical engineering before dropping out to study drama at Howard University. And I certainly didn't know that Henson based the character of Cookie on her plain-speaking father, who encouraged her to follow her dream of acting.

Though not quite a rags-to-riches story, Henson certainly knew hard times. As a junior at college, she fell pregnant but continued with her studies. "Being pregnant is not a disease," she insists and Henson refused to become another statistic, eventually leaving Compton, south Los Angeles, for the bright lights of Hollywood with "just $700 and Jesus".

In auditions, Henson was told that she was too old or that she wasn't "hot" enough. Nonetheless, she got her first big break in 2001 in John Singleton's Baby Boy, where she starred opposite model Tyrese. But she was intelligent enough to recognise the gender politics at play in Hollywood, so when Tyrese's career took off after the movie's release but not hers, she was not surprised. "It's a man-made world," she says. "But I keep my grace and I refuse to become bitter. I realised that I was going to have to make a lane for myself."

Fast forward a decade and Henson has appeared in a string of successful TV shows including Person of Interest, Eli Stone and The Cleveland Show, and was nominated for an Oscar for her role as Queenie in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in 2009. She now shares a manager with Halle Berry and director Lee Daniels is a close friend (Henson is "like a mother" to his daughter), and was in a position to fight for her as the lead in Empire. Nonetheless, she still had to audition to see if she had chemistry with co-star Terrence Howard, something Henson laughs at.

The scene they chose involved Henson slapping Howard across the face, which she did for real - forgetting to remove her ring beforehand. "You could see the imprint of my ring on his face - I thought he was going to kill me!" There was a long awkward moment, then Howard looked at her and said, "Do it again."

And the future? Henson is in this for the long haul. "I want longevity," she says, and doesn't want to be defined solely by the colour of her skin. "I'll be glad when we can get to a place where we're not saying black this and black that."

Justin Bieber Gets Ozzy Osbourne Makeover For 'Crazy Train' Performance On 'Lip Sync Battle' (VIDEO)

If you’re sick of the sight of Justin Bieber’s signature look - high-top trainers, no shirt and jeans belted around his knees so we can all get a look at his Calvin Klein waistband - then you might be surprised to see he’s undergone a dramatic transformation.

SEE MORE:

The ‘Beauty And A Beat’ singer got a decidedly edgier makeover for a recent TV appearance, ditching his vest tops and perfectly coiffed hairstyle for a leather jacket and grunge wig, complete with heavy eyeliner and black nail varnish.

Beliebers needn’t worry, though, he’s not completely ditched his trademark threads - he’s just impersonating Ozzy Osbourne for an appearance on ‘Lip Sync Battle’.

The Biebs looked unrecognisable as he hit the stage to perform Black Sabbath’s ‘Crazy Train’, and we have to give him props for serving up a pretty believable (or should that be Beliebable) Ozzy impression.

Luckily, he drew the line at biting the head off a bat.

However, while we’re impressed with his Ozzy-inspired performance, we doubt the rocker’s other half, Sharon Osbourne, will be.

Speaking about The Biebs to The Mirror last year, Sharon said: “He needs a good slap. He is surrounded by the wrong people, by kiss-asses. I would say, 'Put your little ass in the studio and don't come out until you have a great body of work.'”

Ouch.

Other stars to have impressed us on ‘Lip Sync Battle’ include Anne Hathaway, who delivered a surprisingly convincing Miley Cyrus impression, when she performed ‘Wrecking Ball’ on the Spike TV show.

'Love Island' 2015: Jonathan Clark Admits He's Near 'End Of The Road' With Hannah Elizabeth, Just Days Couple Had Sex On Show

The course of true love never did run smooth - particularly when you’re in front of hundreds of thousands of ITV2 viewers - and now ‘Love Island’ contestant Jonathan Clark has admitted he’s close to ending things completely with his new girlfriend, Hannah Elizabeth.

SEE MORE:

Things took a turn for the worse for Jonathan and Hannah in Monday night’s ‘Love Island’, after she flew off the handle at him for cosying up to one of their fellow islanders, even going as far as saying she wanted to quit the show altogether.

The next day, Hannah has some things she wants to get off her chest, beginning with telling Jonathan she’s worried his extrovert personality might just be a front he's putting on especially for the show.

hannah
Hannah gets emotional with Jonathan

“I know you’re a loud person and that’s why I love you,” she explains to him, during a private moment, “But I dunno if you’re playing up.

“You can’t say nothing to you quietly, you have to do everything in front of everyone.”

Letting off steam alone in the beach hut, Jon confesses that his new girlfriend is “doing his f***ing nut in”, adding: “I’m near enough at the end of the road.”

Yep, you’re right, that’s definitely a cue for a song.

Fortunately for fans of a reality TV romance, the pair manage to patch up their differences and move forward together as a couple.

“I’ve never felt like this in my life, ever,” Jon tells Hannah, “You are the perfect woman, your looks, your body, your personality, your laugh, your teeth, your hair, your smell, everything about you is what I want, you’re perfect to me…and that scares the life out of me because you could break my heart, put it in a blender and bury it.”

Oddly specific, Jon, but still a nice sentiment, we suppose.

Hannah then responds: “I have come in here and you are literally everything I have ever wanted…I’m just so scared of losing you.”

hannah
Cheer up, hun - you're on your hols!

Ending the show on a high, Jonathan then drops the L-bomb, insisting: “There’s nothing to be scared of…I love you so much and I will never hurt you, ever.”

Talk about a total 180, right?

Hannah and Jon were at the centre of two very different controversies last week, first when it emerged that they knew each other before entering ‘Love Island’, and later when they became the first couple to have sex in the villa, despite ITV2 bosses’ insistence they wouldn’t be showing any nookie.

Susanna Reid Tries In Vain To Disguise Her Breakfast With Her Foot In Hilarious 'Good Morning Britain' Clip (VIDEO)

You know that feeling when you’re munching your breakfast at your desk, and then all of a sudden you’re broadcasting live to the nation at seven in the morning on ‘Good Morning Britain’, and you have to improvise?

Well, Susanna Reid does.

SEE MORE:

On Tuesday morning’s edition of the early morning show, Susanna had clearly been tucking into her brekkie before taking to the airwaves, as a plate was spotted on the floor while she delivered one of her links.

Ever the professional, Susanna tried her best to disguise the errant dish by attempting to distract viewers with her high-heel shoe, but it was too late, and one eagle-eyed viewer spotted it and put it on Twitter.

Luckily, the TV journalist clearly had a sense of humour about it all, sharing the clip on her own page, before joking: “When your breakfast appears in shot, but you think you're secretly hiding it with your foot…”

During her stint at the helm of ‘Good Morning Britain’, Susanna has had to deal with her fair share of live TV mishaps - all of which she’s handled like a true pro - including an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction, where her dress came undone during a live broadcast.

She also recently hit back at suggestions that she “flirts” with male guests on ‘GMB’, insisting: “It’s frustrating - I’m a professional interviewer whose job it is to get the absolute best out of people. To then have it described in a different way, feels a bit like come on, really?”

We Must Do More to Protect Our Cultural Heritage

$
0
0
For more than eighty years the British Council has recognised the value of cultural heritage across the globe, so the announcement that the British government will ratify the Hague Convention, as well as committing to a new fund to help protect cultural heritage, is very welcome. After all, military intervention and aid will only get a country so far on the path towards security and prosperity; culture and education must be two of the pillars of our international offer. This is for two reasons. One, as ISIL loots and destroys cultural sites across the Middle East, we are losing forever some of the most important and significant historical buildings and artefacts in the world; once they are gone they are gone and we must step up our efforts to halt this corrosion of civilisation. Immediate action is not an instantaneous panacea but it will help to maintain a sense of agency that is crucial in times of flux and insecurity. We can harness this agency to promote a space for debate; in the longer term this will provide stability, not to mention a vital source of income through tourism, when it is safe enough to go back.

The UK has a role to play because of our world class artists, curators, conservators and institutions. In many cases local museums and heritage sites across the Middle East and North Africa lack the capability to digitally document their infrastructure, meaning that when physically destroyed, they are gone for good. In others, the need is to develop skills and knowledge in management of these sites, and in advocating for the value of these places to the world at large. The British Council's museum-twinning programme has thrown up some unlikely bedfellows. The Bardo Museum in Tunis, housed in a beautiful 15th-century Hafsid palace (and itself site of a recent act of terrorism), has been working on its outreach programme for school children with museums and archivists from the North East of England. We have recently supported a visit by Neil MacGregor, Director of the British Museum, to Rabat, as part of a partnership with the Moroccan National Foundation of Museums. Institutions in Bristol and Lincoln have been linked with their counterparts in Egypt and we are offering fellowships to artists and curators from across the Occupied Palestinian Territories in partnership with Oxford Brookes, Newcastle and Lincoln Universities. We must hope that the Cultural Protection Fund will allow us to build on this work.

These links are key to future progress. Aside from the self-evident value of conserving such places for future generations, working in unstable regions in this way enables social development and the building of inclusive and open societies where human rights and freedom of expression are valued. The arts provide genuine alternative pathways for young people at risk at home and abroad, creating safer, more secure environments and a haven for those enmeshed in conflict. They offer hope and memory, strengthen families and offer routes to employment and security. In short, culture reduces intolerance and builds understanding and the arts can't stand by any more, or more importantly be ignored by governments and key international agencies. There are both long term aims and quick wins. It is too late for parts of Syria and Iraq but Libya, Mali, Afghanistan and Nigeria are places where preventative action could have enormous. In Nepal, though the trigger - an earthquake - is different, the consequences are the same; the loss of cultural sites and livelihoods. Britain must respond quickly to both man-made and natural disasters and at the British Council we are wholly committed to making sure that culture is a key driver of sustainable development.

BRTIS BLITZ: FKA Twigs' Rise To Fame - And Why She's Just The Woman To Fly The British Flag Abroad

$

As part of the #BritsBlitz series, HuffPost UK Entertainment are charting the rise of the hottest British stars, who are flying the flag around the world. Now, we’re turning our attention to FKA Twigs, who came to our attention with the release of her much-hyped debut ‘LP1’, in August 2014.

Before stepping into the spotlight, the singer - quite literally - lurked in the background of the musical world, waiting for the right moment to launch her career as a solo artist. When she did, fans and critics on both sides of the Atlantic stopped to listen, and pay attention. Here’s how she did it - and why twigs is just the sort of export that the UK needs…

Twigs spent the first 16 years of her life known as Tahliah Barnett, growing up in Cheltenham and attending a private, Catholic school, before moving to London to become a backing dancer. This part of the tale is told often, as it was here that thanks to her cracking joints, twigs earned the nickname that would later become her stage name. Later at the request of the American band twigs, she added the ‘FKA’.

The fact dancing gave twigs her name often means it’s pegged as the reason for her move to London, but in fact twigs has stated she “couldn’t imagine doing anything else” other than music. She still trains every week, but dropped out of dance school just weeks after starting.

Music actually came long before, as she explained to Pitchfork, saying: “I started writing seriously when I was 16. I grew up in a place called Gloucestershire; my dad is Jamaican, and it had quite a large Jamaican community. There was a youth club there with a low-key studio, and they'd have guys rapping, and I'd put the chorus down on the track.”

Nevertheless, twigs became known in the industry as a reliable - if noisy - dancer, and she went on to star in videos with Kylie Minogue, Ed Sheeran Jessie J. It’s Jessie J’s ‘Price Tag’ vid that is commonly cited by critics recalling twigs’ previous career, and it led to her first, “are you that girl…?” comments on the street, which later inspired the track ‘Video Girl’, in which she coos: “Was she that girl from the video?/[...]The camera’s on you, ain’t that enough?”

“It got to the point where my fees were double the other girls’, and I wouldn't even have to audition,” she told Pitchfork. “They'd call my agent directly and say, ‘We want twigs to come in.’ I had a reputation for being reliable. When the camera was on, I'd be the one-take wonder, so a lot of directors liked working with me.”

However, she didn’t exactly enjoy the work. "I fucking hated it," she recalled to the Observer. "Do you think I want to be dressed up as a puppet? As a doll, waving? No. But I was paying my dues. I'm sure Jessie had to do rubbish jobs as well before she was where she is now. I was a tiny cog in her wheel. As I'm sure at some point she was a tiny cog in someone else's wheel."

Twigs’ dancing career came to an end in 2012. Months before she self-released her first music online, she graced the cover of i-D magazine, a sure sign of the success, and attention, she would later receive. The shoot was conducted by Matthew Stone, who spotted her on the bus, and he became one of the first commentators to draw comparisons to Bjork, explaining that twigs has “this crossover appeal but actually has an amazing experimental, transgressive and creative approach to her music”.

“What makes her so interesting is that she knows what she wants,” he continued. “When we worked together on that i-D cover, even before she’d released her music, twigs had this self-awareness and strong vision of where her work would be going and a confidence in her own career and her own creativity – I knew that wasn’t going to go away.”

When twigs released her first tracks, on ‘EP1’, a video accompanied each one. With her delicate yet powerful, high-pitched voice, and visuals created with director Jesse Kanda - that YouTube deemed worthy of age-restriction notices for being sexually explicit - twigs captured everyone’s attention, and perhaps more importantly, given the disposable nature of today’s culture, held our gaze.

By ‘EP2’, twigs had been snapped up by indie label Young Turks, and ‘How’s That’ was released as the EP’s promotional single in May 2013. By this point, twigs had landed ample column inches in Dazed, The Observer, Consequence of Sound and DIY, even though her full debut album didn’t have a release date, let alone a cover or name. Those who spotted her on early on could start nodding and saying ‘I told you so’.

Then, ‘Water Me’ was released as the EP’s second single, and the video that accompanied it went viral, totting up over five million views on YouTube in a matter of weeks. The clip shows twigs’ staring straight into the camera, unblinking, as a single tear rolls down her cheeks, while her eyes grow. In late 2013, she was named on the BBC’s Sound Of 2014 list, but went on to miss out on the title to Sam Smith, whose global success is well-documented.

What makes twigs so fantastic - and worthy of worldwide attention - is that she’s a breath of fresh air, and creativity, while a number of British exports (yes, I mean One Direction and the like), are impressive, but not exactly a driving force when it comes to innovation, and performance. Are we really going to sit up in 10 years time, and hail ‘Four’ as a masterpiece? Or recall how the ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ video inspired countless artists? I appreciate 1D’s significance in the music world as much as the next teen fan, but they’re certainly not a creative tour-de-force. Twigs didn’t get to where she is by amassing thousands of teen followers, she did it the old-fashioned way, with years of success and hard work.

Twigs not only writes her own songs but produces them too - a point, she’s observed, that people often need reminding of when the artist is female - along with co-directing most of the accompanying videos. “Two years ago, I couldn’t produce [music]; I learned how to do it in literally two years,” she told Rookie in 2014. “I found it really difficult to program when I started, then I had this leap of confidence to actually get in front of the computer and learn how to do it. It was a massive challenge, because I am not a very logical person at all. It’s about facing your fears. If you do that, you realize that you can actually do anything you want to do! It’s been the most liberating experience.”

She worked with the legendary Paul Epworth on ‘Pendulum’, but retained creative control, and her tracks are worlds away from results of Paul’s studio sessions with stars such as Adele, Coldplay and Florence And The Machine. Her songs are overtly sexual, and twigs plays with the gender, power and sexuality. On ‘Water Me’, she whispers, “He won't make love to me now/ Not now, I've set the fee”, then later on ‘Hours’: “How would you like it if my lips touched yours, and they stayed closed, baby 'til the stars fade out? / How would you like it if I suck before I bite but it wasn't too hard so it felt alright?”

Twigs’ profile rose simultaneously in the UK and America and the days where an artist had to launch themselves in their home country, before taking their wares abroad and attempting to “crack America” are long gone. For every interview she completed with a cult British publication, (Dazed, The Guardian, Noisey), a feature followed in a US equivalent (Rookie, Slate, Pitchfork).

In the run up to her album’s September 2014 release, twigs was performing concerts on both sides of the Atlantic, and her rendition of ‘Two Weeks’ on Jimmy Fallon’s late night talk show prompted global interest. Despite her insistence that TV is a medium she struggles with - “You’re standing in a spot where other artists have stood a million times before. It’s hard to distinguish yourself” - she commands every set and stage with ease. It wasn’t until the album finally hit the iTunes store - the global nature of music promotion and consumption deserves its own full analysis - that she appeared on the UK’s ‘Later, With Jools Holland’.

Of course, at some point within this whirlwind, twigs started a relationship. With Robert Pattinson. While the artist doesn’t enjoy discussing her relationship, and has always kept her private life, well, private, it would be impossible to discuss her global appeal without at least mentioning the man she’s now engaged to - given that he starred in one of the most commercially successful film franchises of all time. However, while her friends have revealed twigs and “ol’ Patty” are happy, it’s through the relationship that she’s experienced the darker side of fame.

In September, as she was riding high on rave reviews and encouraging sales, twigs was faced with a tirade of online abuse, from fans of Kristen Stewart, Rob’s ‘Twilight’ co-star and ex-girlfriend. A number of the tweets focused on the fact twigs is mixed race.

“Obviously I know if you’re putting yourself out there, saying, ‘Hey! Listen to my music!’, with pictures of yourself in the magazines, then people are going to judge you. ‘I hate her music. I hate her hair. I hate her production. I hate her videos.’ Fine: don’t care,” she said to The Guardian. “That’s the great thing about art, it’s not for everyone. But when it comes to racism, really? In this day and age? Pick that?”

fka twigs met gala

Then there’s the tabloid interest in their relationship and engagement, which has brought a level of attention usually reserved for red carpet regulars. Admittedly, without her burgeoning, if unwanted, celebrity status, twigs’ Field Day set probably wouldn’t have caught the attention of MailOnline, or The Mirror. But the performances themselves - and the woman behind them - deserve so much more than a cursory glance and 400 words on twigs’ outfit. As Crack magazine asserted, her performances leave audiences “hopelessly spellbound”, and even if you entered the concert to see “Robert Pattinson’s fiancee”, you’d leave and tell everyone about the extraordinary FKA twigs. Her songs will pester you on the way home, and whispering in your for weeks. In short, anyone focussing on twigs’ relationship is missing out.

Twigs is determined not to let herself get swallowed whole by the celebrity world, and you can count on one hand the times she’s made a public appearance with her fiance. To overlook her creativity, style and bold production techniques in favour of poring over some pap shots, eager for a glimpse of Rob waiting near a venue, would be nothing short of foolish.

FKA twigs is the export the UK needs and boy, are we lucky to have her. Record sales and social media followers can only last so long (though she has plentiful amounts of these) and as bands formed on talent shows begin to flounder, lose members and suffer creative crises, the bedroom musicians and self-taught producers will be flying the flag, consistently in the background.

We Brits love an eccentric, an outsider, and twigs is exactly that - only she’s permeated the mainstream. With talent, confidence, and more than a few wise words for those who want to follow in her footsteps, twigs is paving a path that, hopefully, other Brits can follow. What’s next? A summer of festivals, across the country. And after that, most likely, a second album. But one thing’s for sure - we’ll be waiting eagerly, to find out twigs’ next move - as will our friends on the other side of the Atlantic.

'Man Of Steel' Star Michael Shannon Describes Two Levels Of Fame, As He Stars In Thriller 'Can't Come Out To Play'

Actor Michael Shannon believes there are two levels of fame for film actors these days, “the normal level and the superhero level”.

Michael, who played General Zod in ‘Man of Steel’ in the recent Superman reboot, tells HuffPostUK:

“People approach me for different things. I would say, based on walking down the street in New York, that ‘Man of Steel’ has a pretty big audience out there.

“Mind you, the thing I’ve heard most often recently called out to me is for ‘Boardwalk Empire’. Being on TV is a whole different ballgame, because you become part of somebody’s routine.

“Mind you, either of them is better than getting beaten up.”

Michael says he’d be happy to enter the superhero universe again, but for the chance to work with Zac Snyder rather than the money it brings.

“I’ve never been in it for the money,” he explains. “I don’t need much. I haven’t bought a villa. I’ve always made sure I don’t owe anybody anything.”

Meanwhile, Michael reveals he had to turn mediator on the set of his latest chilling thriller, ‘Can’t Come Out To Play’ when the tension caught on camera threatened to spill over into the production.

Michael tells HuffPostUK he ended up playing peacemaker between cast and crew, including British actress Samantha Morton and director John McNaughton.

He says: “There was definitely a little bit of tension on the set, in terms of getting the story right.

“It was interesting because I fell into the role of mediating all this, trying to keep everyone happy, which is kind of what happens in the story, too.”

The film follows the friendship of teenagers Maryann (Natasha Calis) and Andy (Charlie Tahan), a child in very poor health who must stay indoors and follow his parents’ instructions. When Maryann’s visits are discovered, Andy’s father Richard (Michael Shannon) is initially fine, but mother Katherine (Samantha Morton) does not feel the same, and her behaviour becomes increasingly erratic.

Michael says now: “I’m a parent myself. I can definitely understand the feeling of being willing to do anything to save your child.

“I’ve had to deal with one of my daughters being in hospital, and it’s horrifying to see one of your kids suffer. This film asks, how far would you be willing to go to save them?

“And, as far as the mother goes with every insane, crazy action, her motivation is only love for her child. Director John presented this movie as kind of like Brothers Grimm fairytale. It kind of made sense to me.”

Tom Holland has been announced as the new ‘Spider-Man’.

The young, relatively unknown British actor, who has appeared in the ‘Billy Elliot’ stage musical, will take over from fellow Brit Andrew Garfield in the role.

Marvel and Sony confirmed the 19-year-old will star in the new film, which is due to hit cinema screens in July 2017.

Tom Holland is the new 'Spider-Man'

In a statement, Marvel said: "The studios and producers were impressed by Holland's performances in The Impossible, Wolf Hall, and the upcoming In the Heart of the Sea, and by a series of complex screen tests.

"For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom's screen tests were special."

Ron Howard, who directed Tom in the forthcoming ‘In The Heart Of The Sea’, says the young star will bring 'heart and humour' to the role.

"Tom's young, incredibly agile and fit. He's also very accessible and very relatable,” he told the BBC.

"He's one of us and has tremendous skills as an actor.

"His years as Billy Elliot have served him well. He does his own stunts, some really challenging ones.

"He's very down to earth, very hard working and has great sense of fun."

When asked about the pressure the new high-profile role would bring, Howard added: "Tom has a good sense of how the film industry works as a business. He'll handle that pressure very well.

"He's a great young talent and also has the attitude to maximise all of his potential and I'm very excited for him."

Before his starring role as Spidey, Tom is expected to make an appearance as the web-slinger in ‘Captain America: Civil War’.

After learning that Tom will be Marvel's new Peter Parker, Twitter responded to the casting decision...

Marvel and Sony also announced that Jon Watts will direct the next "Spider-Man" film, scheduled for release in 2017.

Graham Norton Reveals He Wants To Retire From Hosting His Talk Show, Before He Turns 60

Graham Norton has admitted he’s already thinking about retiring, and claims he wants to throw in the towel before he turns 60.

SEE MORE:

The TV presenter, who previously fronted ‘So Graham Norton’ and ‘V Graham Norton’ for Channel 4, before landing his current talk show on the BBC, has said he wants his show to come to an end while it’s still a hit.

As reported in The Mirror, he told an audience at the Times+ event in London: “You want to get out when people are still watching your show.

“You don’t want it to be when people say: ‘That is still on, that is still a thing?’

“I’m not jumping tomorrow but it is in my head.”

He also reportedly said he wants to have stepped down by his 60th birthday, in eight years time, but confessed to feeling apprehensive, because it would be such a final move.

Graham went on to say: “I do love my job. I might really miss it and then I will feel like an absolute fool. You can’t come back. You could only come back to do ‘I’m a Celebrity’ or ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ or really awful things.”

After eight years on the air, ‘The Graham Norton Show’ is still drawing in huge numbers of viewers, and its A-list guests continue to make headlines with their appearances.

Just this month, Chris Pratt stunned viewers with his dead-on impression of the cast of ‘TOWIE’, while Seth MacFarlane performed a hilarious rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s ‘True Colours’, in character, as Peter Griffin from 'Family Guy'.
