The Sequel That Eats Sequels: 'Jurassic World'

$

0
Jurassic World is a film about films. More specifically, it is a film about film sequels, and the expectations an audience has of film sequels. It plays on these expectations subtly, and, I think, rather brilliantly. Let me explain.

The trailer, when it was launched, went to work creating the sense of a film that wanted to crush its older siblings underfoot, in the classic Hollywood manner. The approach is usually to frame a crude caricature of what the movie studio supposes must be what the audience liked about the original - let's call this the 'T-Rex Wow Factor' in this case - and to work out how to make it bigger and better than the original. If the film is about explosions, then in the sequel EVERYTHING MUST EXPLODE. If the film is about Liam Neeson's stuff getting taken, then MAKE HIS STUFF GET REALLY TAKEN. In this case, it's a genetically modified, bigger and better version of the T-Rex (the trailer all but says those words). The new dinosaur thus perfectly embodies the formula of the lazy sequel. A friend, upon seeing the trailer for Jurassic World, bemoaned the tendency of sequels to try too hard to up the ante. A genetically-modified dinosaur that is almost literally a Super T-Rex? That's surely the laziest way to up the 'T-Rex Wow Factor'. The trailer itself, indeed, had the line 'they're dinosaurs, "wow" enough'. Surely this irony couldn't have been lost on the filmmakers?

Well, it turns out that that irony is precisely what was intended, and what Jurassic World serves up is a masterclass in self-aware metacinema: it is a sequel that wants to bury the idea of the sequel. The story for the most part unfolds fairly predictably, though the film is pleasingly paced throughout (the audience is as surprised as Chris Pratt's character to realise that, with his first visit to see the new dinosaur, the action of the film has already begun). The formula runs: scientists and business-types talk up the ferocity of a new beast (let's call it 'Sequel'); Sequel breaks loose; Sequel begins eating scientists, business-types, and the odd docile herbivore. But any sense of the formulaic breaks down with the film's climax, set in the obliterated, largely-evacuated park that is 'Jurassic World'.

The scene is set for a showdown between Chris Pratt (who I chose to conflate with his character), with the velociraptors with whom he has developed an entente cordiale, versus the rampaging Sequel. It starts to look like the Pratt-Raptor combo isn't going to triumph. And then, at a crucial moment, one of the younger cast members suggests that what they need on their side is 'more teeth'. The order goes out: 'open pen nine!'. We aren't told what to expect to stroll out of pen nine, but we still know what's coming. That familiar foot-fall, that heavy breath. It's 1993 all over again, as the original T-Rex himself is brought out of retirement, unmodified genetics and all, and is re-enlisted, Terminator 2-style, as an unlikely hero. As the two giants begin snapping at each other (in what are spectacular scenes) it gradually dawns on you that you are watching a death-match between the original Jurassic Park and its sequel. The audience is not only rooting for the former villain, but they are actively encouraged to do so - the lives of two young boys, a young woman, and the charming Chris Pratt depend upon it. Come on 1993! Come on embodiment of cinematic nostalgia! Eat that stinking Sequel!

This scene is foreshadowed throughout, I think. Jurassic World (theme park, not film) is literally built upon Jurassic Park, and, like a palimpsest, glimpses of the latter peek through the cracks of the former. The two kids of the film find themselves in the same shopping area and dining hall as do Timmy and Lex during the penultimate act of Jurassic Park. Even the heavy and expensive night-vision goggles make an appearance. And those things for which we feel nostalgia triumph early on. For instance, the kids walk past a number of new, sequel-worthy vehicles wrecked by the Sequel dinosaur before they arrive at the remnants of the old park. What vehicle carries them to safety? Only a classic, 'Jurassic Park'-branded gas-powered Jeep. The dusty but trusty objects of our past save the day ("How did they even get one of these old things started?", asks Pratt).

So by the time we are reunited with the T-Rex it is only right that he feels somehow like a sort of saviour, a better-the-enemy-you-know biped from the past, an anti-hero to be venerated above the young upstart of the sequel. The message is clear: leave the original film alone, or else. Of course, it looks for a moment like the T-Rex is going to lose, and the hypothetical dominance of the Sequel had been adequately talked up by the dead or fled scientists of Act One. Rex is down, the count has begun. But one last velociprator returns to the scene with a rebel 'Caw!', and sinks his teeth into Sequel. This gives beloved Rex a moment to recuperate: he finds his feet, bites Sequel, and sends him spinning towards what is very much the Sea World exhibit of the new park. A sort of giant fish-crocodile-dinosaur, who manages not to represent the concept of the sequel but acts only as deus ex machina, leaps out and drags Sequel kicking and screaming into the waters of obscurity. Sequel dies, audience cheers.

The Sequel vanquished, the cast of the original take a good long look at one another: velociraptor eyes up T-Rex, and vice versa. We remember that Jurassic Park ended with a T-Rex battling the remaining 'raptors under a symbolically falling 'Jurassic Park' banner. This time, though, no such battle takes place. Like two world-weary and worn-out soldiers, brought together just this once by a common enemy, they exchange only a look of understanding. The T-Rex turns and walks away; the 'raptor looks after him with something like respect. The audience understands perfectly: the cast of the original have assembled to see off a ghastly, too-big-for its-boots sequel. It's like seeing Rancor eat Jar-Jar Binks, or like watching a young Harrison Ford punch his older self. In a sense, it would have been a similar scene if the T-Rex and the velociprator had walked off the set together and dragged the writers of the third Jurassic Park into the giant fishtank instead. That was, after all, the film that first wanted to find a bigger, deadlier T-Rex, to create a more psychopathic killer that could murder Michael Myers, or a more terrifying shark that could eat Jaws whole. The threat, of the sequel that might kill off the original, has been neutralized.

I dare say this is not brand new territory for films. There has been a trend, of late, for showing the vulnerabilities of a now-aged hero. Think of Batman's broken back, or the boozy Bond of Skyfall. These felt at the time like Hollywood reflecting on its own age, or like a franchise feeling its own threads wear thin, but answering, with triumph, that the Sequel can yet replicate the wonder of the Original. But Jurassic World manages to stage the tension between sequel and original with exceptional brilliance, and has us rethink our own relationship with our on-screen heroes. Some things should remain sacred, it makes us feel. Don't always go out of your way to 'cook up' new monsters to do away with the old ones. We like some of the old ones, and in the interests of leaving memories intact and allowing nostalgia to remain a safe place to return (nostalgia comes from the Greek for 'homecoming', after all), some originals are better off without their sequels, which often serve as little more than a dagger in the back. Jurassic World stages a pleasing conflict between past and present that, for once, allows the past to walk away with its dignity intact and its prehistoric head held high. I can think of no better tribute to the original Jurassic Park, so important to so many childhoods, than that.

As Someone With a Disability, I Disagree That 'The Undateables' Represents Disabled People as a 'Source of Comedy'

$

I heard the British Medical Association (BMA) criticising Channel 4's The Undateables and suggesting it represents 'disabled people as a source of comedy'. As someone with a learning disability, I disagree.

I, like the BMA, had concerns when I first heard the name "The Undateables". I was worried that it would be similar to other shows that are on TV and make fun of people with a disability, as often people with a learning disability are shown in a negative way. But having watched the show I feel it is important, because it shows in a positive way people with a disability in their hunt to find love and relationships. Which is something that a lot of people want to do in life, regardless of whether they have a disability or not.

Having real people with disabilities dealing with real life issues proves those stereotypes are just wrong. Having looked at the positive tweets about the show, including by celebrities, it is clear to see that this is what it has done. This is important because it helps people to talk about learning disability, and see the people, not the disability, which is really what is important in changing perceptions of disability. As hate crime and bullying are sadly still a daily reality for many disabled people.

The people on the programme were fantastic and have proved that they are not different from anyone else. They have shown empathy and that everybody has a right to love. The episode I most enjoyed was the episode where a girl called Kate, who has Down's syndrome, talked about finding her dream man. I liked the poems that she wrote. They were about how she wanted to fall in love and get married. You can read my interview with Kate here.

I could understand how she felt, because when I was growing up I wanted to have the same things as her. I always dreamed about my own wedding day. However, I was diagnosed with a learning disability when I was ten and since then I've been told: 'you will never', 'you can't', 'you won't'. All negative attitudes. It was hard for me to imagine then that I would ever get married. That is why getting married on 4 May, 2013, was a really big thing for me because it proved to a lot of people that it was something I wanted. I therefore really like the way that each person who has been featured in the programme talks about their dream to meet someone and be in a good relationship. I also like the way that the people from the dating agencies support the people on the show to be positive about going on dates.

There have been negative comments about the people on the show. I have seen some of them on Twitter - it is horrible and is bullying. These kinds of attitudes prove that some people still don't understand disability, and makes these TV shows even more important in that they portray people with a disability in a positive way.

Channel 4 is a mainstream TV channel and I think overall it is good that they have a series that has helped to show positive stories of people with a disability. It is a shame if the BMA can not see this. However, it should not just be on dating shows, what we really need is to have more people with a learning disability in all types of shows.

'Big Brother': Simon Gross Evicted As Helen Wood And Nikki Grahame Leave, While John McCririck Now Set To Return

Big Brother’ lost three of its housemates on Friday (26 June) as Simon Gross was evicted, and legends Nikki Grahame and Helen Wood also left the Channel 5 reality show, after their two week stay came to an end.

MORE 'BIG BROTHER':

Simon became the ninth person to be voted out of the house after the latest public vote, which placed him up for eviction against Joel Williams, Jack McDermott, Nick Henderson, Sam Kay, Harry Martin, Cristian MJC and Danny Wisker.

The theatre producer left the house to heavy booing, but insisted the crowd’s reaction didn’t bother him, telling host Emma Willis: “Ha, I've been in worse pantomimes, dear.”

Time also ran out for BB ‘legends’ Helen and Nikki, who returned to the house earlier this month as part of a ‘Time Warp’ twist.

The pair left the house one-by-one after their relationship soured, following the highly controversial comments Helen made to Brian Belo, which saw him scale a wall and leave the house earlier this week.

Emma dragged Helen over the coals about her argument with Brian, in which she said he “looked like a murderer and a rapist”.

Helen Wood was finally shown the door

However, she remained unrepentant for her comments, saying: "He took every single opportunity to say something horrible to me. I think Brian is a bully himself.”

She added: “He's said various things about me, and because I didn't go and cry in the Diary Room it was OK. He used things that I told him personally in every single argument."

Helen also branded Nikki “an absolute fraudster”, saying: "She's fake... she acts like a diva and what I can't stand is there was this showbiz personality that came out whenever there was a task.”

nikki grahame
Nikki's stay in the house also came to an end

Nikki was also less than complimentary about Helen during her interview with Emma, saying: “I was very scared of Helen though - she's very intimidating.

“She doesn't hold back and I think she takes things too far. She says nasty, personal things.”

Meanwhile, Emma also announced that the house would now be transformed into Big Brother’s ‘Hotel From Hell’, and some other faces from the show’s past would also be popping up, with former ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ housemate John McCririck lined up to appear first.

‘Big Brother’ continues tonight at 9pm on Channel 5.

The host of the madcap Channel 4 chat show has claimed that he’d planned for Grimmy to take over from him on a new series, but plans were halted by Grimmy’s new job on ‘The X Factor’.

Earlier this month, it was announced that the Radio 1 DJ will take over from Louis Walsh on the ITV talent show, joining fellow new judge Rita Ora and the returning Simon Cowell and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini.

Chris - who has also been announced as the new host of ‘Top Gear’ - admitted he was “very disappointed” that Nick wasn’t able to take up the offer of host of ‘TFI Friday’.

He told The Sun: “Unfortunately he has another contract I found out about in The Sun newspaper.

“He’s exclusive with ITV, so it’s very disappointing. He will always be welcome on the show, though.”

He added: “I will be presenting the next eight shows and I’m very excited about it.”

Chris previously voiced his desire for Grimmy to succeed him as ‘TFI’ host, saying on a special episode earlier this month: "Nick is the future of this show. I think if this show comes back he is the one."

However, the suggestion received a backlash from fans of the show with many taking to Twitter in disagreement.

Meanwhile, Nick has been speaking about his role on ‘The X Factor’, revealing he has no idea what type of judge he will make.

He told Metro: "My friends keep asking me what kind of judge I'll be. I guess I'm just gonna be myself.

"I'm not going to go out my way to be mean or nice. You've got to be honest, otherwise there's no point."

‘EastEnders’ executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins has promised a summer of explosive storylines on the soap, insisting that there will be some “very big developments and twists” in the love square plot.

He has also revealed that new arrival Gavin Sullivan - who is the estranged husband of recent returnee Kathy Beale - will be an “‘EastEnders’ villain like no other”.

Speaking at a press event for the soap, he said: "He is going to be modern, complex and he will have a little foot in the past and a foot in the present. You will learn more about him later."

Dominic also explained that the storyline between Paul Coker and Ben Mitchell will also come to the forefront, as the new arrival helps the troubled Mitchell come to terms with his sexuality, while Vincent Hubbard’s mother Claudette will also become a more prominent character, with more details about her relationship with Les Coker emerging.

The Lucy Beale plot will also be revisited, with the soap boss adding that a surprise character will be arrested, despite it being revealed earlier this year that Bobby Beale was responsible for his sister’s death.

"We rested the story a little bit and gave it a little breather, but that kicks up a notch over the summer with a big arrest that is going to take us through to September and a few old faces will return for that as well," he teased.

Glastonbury 2015: The Libertines Showcase New Tracks In Nostalgia-Fuelled Surprise Set (REVIEW)

Everyone from Taylor Swift to Bastille was namechecked on Friday afternoon, as festival-goers at Glastonbury tried to determined who’d be replace Florence And The Machine, following the group’s promotion to headliners.

MORE GLASTONBURY:

For once, the secret addition to the bill was (mostly) kept under wraps, and fans got a pleasant surprise when Carl Barat , Pete Doherty, Gary Powell and John Hassell stepped onto the stage.

Fresh from recording their first album in over 10 years, the group were on top form, and took the chance to showcase new track ‘Handsome’, after smashing through classics including ‘Time For Heroes’, ‘Horrorshow’ and ‘What Katie Did’.

Set highlights included ‘Music When The Lights Go Out’, which unsurprisingly inspired a huge, early evening singalong, and a riotous rendition of ‘Can’t Stand Me Now’, though the gig had a tamer feel, compared to their 2014 Alexandra Palace performances.

New trank ‘Gunga Gin’ was a hit with the crowds, and there was little sign of the synths, which will apparently make a noteworthy appearance on their upcoming third release.

Pete and Carl’s famously tempestuous relationship looks to be well on the road to recovery again, and the pair shared plenty of lingering looks, gazing into each other’s eyes and sharing a microphone for ‘What A Waster’, before closing with ‘Don’t Look Back Into The Sun’.

Other highlights from day one included Mary J Blige, who managed to hold a crowd at the Pyramid Stage, despite the heavy rain, and Everything Everything, who powered through a high-energy set that would have been worthy of a slot far further up the bill.

Explaining the collaboration, he said: "Earlier we were running through hit songs, but this song was extra special to me, so we're not going to run through this s**t in two minutes like some radio version," he told the audience.

"When I was working on Dark Fantasy, I was trying to explain to a girl who I love so much how much I loved her, and I didn't have any words to this record - but we loved the beat.

"Actually in an email I wrote this to her - I said, 'You're my heaven, you're my heaven, you're my freedom, you're my jail'. It was like she brought this poetry out of me, I ended up becoming what the lyrics were.

"And eventually, she ended up becoming my wife and she's here tonight."

Speaking to Digital Spy, Nikki said of the former sex worker: "Helen said some very hurtful things. I coped amazingly with my food, I'm at a really good place with that now and my weight, but Helen said some very hurtful things to me.

“She called me a ‘skinny c**t’ and who says that to a recovering anorexic?”

Nikki continued: “She said that I sleep all day and my life is like a pantomime, or something like that, and I look like a reformed crackhead. Who says things like that?

“She's just pure poison and that's all I can say. You know what, I feel sorry for her because I'm sure somewhere deep down there she can be a good person, but I think she's just got so many issues and I really think she needs help. I just hope that she gets well soon,”
she added.

While in the house, Helen - who sparked a huge public backlash when she said Brian Belo looked like a “murderer and a rapist”, causing him to quit the house - also made light of mental health issues, telling Brian the “men in white coats were coming for him” and that he needed to wear a straitjacket.

Since leaving the house, Helen has continued to mock Nikki’s looks on Twitter, claiming that “her height & oap features make her seem vulnerable”.

She told one follower: “Clips I've seen of her & that clown are all the signs of a bully, her height & oap features make her seem vulnerable.”

When one follower explained that she was “all natural” unlike Helen, who has had several cosmetic procedures, she wrote: “Well that's a relief because if she's spent money on achieving that look I’d be hunting down my receipt!”

She added to another follower: “I think Nikki looks like the final stages of a crack addiction, didn't say that to her face.”

Helen fiercely rejected claims she was a bully while she was in the house, telling Danny Wisker: "I'm actually a very caring person. I'm a good friend to a lot of people. The last thing I am is a bully.”

Jeremy Clarkson is set to go head-to-head with Chris Evans and ‘Top Gear’ with a new ITV show, according to reports.

The former host of the BBC Two motoring show will reportedly team up with pals Richard Hammond and James May to host a rival programme, which will air in the same Sunday night time slot as ‘Top Gear’.

Jeremy was replaced by Chris Evans as the host of ‘Top Gear’ earlier this month, after he was fired for punching a producer, with his co-stars later quitting the show.

According to The Mirror, the trio are hoping to take down Chris’ revamped version.

The boys believe with the backing of ITV and a prime-time slot they can easily match, and probably beat, their BBC2 viewing figures,” a source said.

"The thought of making a show for the BBC’s main rival is very appealing for them.

“Jeremy was deeply hurt and angered by the briefing given by a mystery BBC executive which saw him linked with the name of Savile. Of course he’d like to take revenge for that slur.”

Jeremy, James and Richard’s final episode of ‘Top Gear’ is set to air tonight, but Jeremy has laid into the ‘cobbled together’ farewell.

Writing in his Sun column, he said: “At 8pm tomorrow, BBC2 is screening an edition of Top Gear cobbled together from two films that were made before I was fired.

“One of them is quite good,” he said.

‘Top Gear’ airs tonight at 8pm on BBC Two.

Jeremy Clarkson criticised the BBC on Sunday ahead of his final appearance on “Top Gear.” The presenter and right-wing caricature, who was pushed out of the show after allegedly assaulting producer Oisin Tymon, tweeted:

"Strange that BBC News is talking down the last Top Gear tonight. Do they not want big ratings for some reason?"

Richard Hammond, co-presenter on the long-running show, responded: “Oh, is it on? Always liked that."

James May did not engage in the badinage, instead tweeting that he would spend a “pleasant Sunday evening" listening to AC/DC.

Clarkson has already decried the final episode of the show in his column for The Sun. “BBC Two is screening an edition of Top Gear cobbled together from two films that were made before I was fired," he penned, adding: "One of them is quite good."

After the show was broadcast, Clarkson tweeted one final apology:

“Top Gear” is set to return next year with Chris Evans in the driving seat. A co-host has yet to be selected, with Evans suggesting it could be a fan of the show.

Chris Squire, the co-founder and bass guitarist with British rock band Yes, has died at the age of 67.

The musician’s bandmate’s confirmed he had died ‘peacefully’ in Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday night, after losing his battle with a rare form of leukaemia.

Yes keyboardist Geoffrey Downes tweeted: "Utterly devastated beyond words to have to report the sad news of the passing of my dear friend, bandmate and inspiration Chris Squire."

A statement on the band’s official website said: "It's with the heaviest of hearts and unbearable sadness that we must inform you of the passing of our dear friend and Yes co-founder, Chris Squire.”

The musician revealed in May that he had been recently diagnosed with acute erythroid leukemia, which would force him to miss the band's summer co-headlining tour with Toto.

Story continues after video...

Fellow musicians and fans of the progressive rock band took to Twitter and Facebook to pay tribute.

Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello wrote: "RIP Chris Squire, super bassist of Yes. An extremely talented musician's musician who mastered his instrument and took it to new realms."

American rock guitarist Joe Satriani posted: "R.I.P. and thank you Chris Squire. #ChrisSquire,#yes"

Spandau Ballet star Gary Kemp wrote: “Close to the Edge was one of my most played records as a youth. So much good music was played and made by Chris Squire.Absolute bass legend.”

John Petrucci, of Dream Theater, tweeted: "Thank you for all of the amazing music Chris Squire. You will surely be missed."

Broadcaster Danny Baker added: “Feel really flat after Chris Squire news. If you loved the sound of Yes sometimes you didn't even need anyone else.”

Yes formed in 1968 when singer Jon Anderson met self-taught bassist Squire in London. They signed with Atlantic Records a year later after supporting Janis Joplin at London's Royal Albert Hall. Their debut single, Sweetness, and first album, Yes, were released later that year.

In 1983 they released the album ‘90125’, which featured their classic hit ‘Owner Of A Lonely Heart’, which reached No.1 in the US.

According to The Sun, Tim will be on the receiving end of a ribbing from his pals, including Sally’s ex-husband Kevin, who jokes that he should have asked permission first.

A ‘Corrie’ insider told the paper that the pair’s nuptials will be the “wedding of the year in soapland”, adding: “Sally doesn’t do things by halves. Now she’s going to be the centre of attention she’s going to make sure everyone is looking at her. She’ll want to make sure everyone is talking about it for weeks to come.”

Actress Sally recently backed her character’s pairing with Tim, admitting she didn’t want to see her reunite with ex-husband Kevin after actor Michael Le Vell returned to the Street.

"I think if you put Sally and Kevin together again then what can you do with them? We've been there and done that,” she told the Daily Star.

"I like the modern family thing, and I think it's more interesting and works really well."

What The Arts Can Learn From Twitch

$

"Wait, you WATCH people play COMPUTER GAMES!?"

I've become badly obsessed with Twitch. It is replacing the vast bulk of my TV viewing right now and I've been thinking about it almost constantly - partly with an objective analytical head, attempting to place it in context with the rest of our cultural output and partly just, well, trying to figure out how it's captured me...

Almost nobody I've spoken to, of my own age or background - even culturally hip folks - knows or cares much about Twitch. And certainly nobody yet seems to appreciate its power, structural importance, or potential to inspire. When I try to explain it, people either switch fast into a cynical, mocking mode, or get their minds a little bit blown. For virtually everyone I've talked to about it (aside from one or two honourable gamer exceptions), Twitch is a fundamental brain-melt at concept level; particularly when its sheer scale becomes clear.

One friend who is senior at a TV company asked around his office and told me not a single person there knew it. He gained a pile of brownie points the next week explaining the mechanisms to his colleagues.

Here's what Twitch is - so skip five paragraphs if you already know this. Twitch.tv is a free video live-streaming platform for people who play computer games to broadcast themselves gaming - and for communities to watch and interact live with them. Onscreen you see the actual game as they play. Often you also see the player (streamer) in the corner of the screen, via a webcam. The streamer narrates and explains the action live. The third element is chat: anyone watching can text live chat, which runs up the screen. Streamers spend a lot of time reacting verbally to that chat, in real time.

Then (as is the way with Internet stuff) any possible variant and iteration of that basic set-up probably exists. And streaming is huge. Twitch launched in 2011 as a spinoff from a not-so-successful live streaming channel. By 2013 it had 40 million views a month, by 2014 it was the fourth largest source of USA peak web traffic and last September Amazon paid $970 million for it.

So right now as you read this, hundreds of thousands of people worldwide are not just watching Twitch but living inside that world as their primary online space. People in chat continually talk about it as their web home, the place they return to, more 'real' to them than either conventional social media like Facebook, or their daily lives.

I should add, Twitch also broadcasts professional e-sports (as in competitive gaming with live crowds, commentators and all the trappings of normal sports TV) but, although there is a load to unpack there too, I'll ignore the e-sports aspect for now.

Streaming is often a real career: Twitch streamers earn money via subscriptions ($4.99/month). So if a streamer gets enough viewers and followers, Twitch makes them a partner, gives them a 'subscriber' button, people pay and from then on the streamer makes money. Crucially, I don't mean people pay to view - it's always free to watch - instead subs pay for the added status of being subbed, with increased access, emojis and the chance to join the streamer on private servers sometimes (if the sub is a gamer) and play with them.

There are thousands of professional and semi-professional streamers around the world. The bigger names are global rockstars in that scene and proper famous. American streamer Lirik has 10k subs, generating close to $600k per year and every day he's watched for hours by 30-40 thousand people. A stadium's worth. Add sponsorship, ad revenue share and merchandise to that. That parses into a relatively modest 123k Twitter followers - except this is a dude who barely gives a shit for Twitter, just tweets occasional promo and certainly isn't wasting time chasing followers.

The most interesting element isn't the top end, it's the arts world golden egg: a potentially sustainable, professionalised 'working middle' - the exact area that's been wrecked in the rest of the cultural services world. A large number of more modest 'up-and-coming' streamers have several hundred subs, equating to a viable monthly income (especially considering that most are young, living in shared rental or still at home with parents; equivalent to any artist's developing post-study early period).

Another revelation is identifying who does the funding.

This is the extraordinary equation to get one's head around: the very same kid who doesn't think twice about illegally filesharing a film or TV show is happily paying individual streamers the equivalent to the price of a month's Netflix, not even to access the content but simply for the status of being defined as a subscriber. And the kid isn't just subbing to one favoured streamer, the kid is subbing to a bunch of them.

There is so much to think about here for the entire rest of the arts. We need to find routes to replicate such effective direct-to-fan contact and moment-by-moment authenticity. It makes the growing fanbase very loyal and also more realistic about what the "artist" is actually like. It's a deeper, more forgiving (while at the same time more contributory, outspoken) kind of fandom. I think people building platforms that share the other art-forms ought to (urgently and immediately) build in this kind of infrastructure - whether blogs, video sites, audio streaming, or artist HQs. I'd go so far as to argue cultural survival may lie in figuring out new processes to personalise interaction, place it in real-time and offer subscriptions based on status symbols (such as emotes), extra content and interaction. Where is subbing or monetisation for Periscope and Meerkat? For music makers, Bandcamp's move to enable subscription is a good start - but needs a pile more work to make it anything like as immediate and connected.

I keep imagining a revolutionary next step for YouTube or Bandcamp or someone (This Is My Jam?) - a paradigm for video DJing modelled on this system (ha - what MTV used to call VJs in the 1990s) - where the DJ curates videos (pulled from an archive of everything ever) while at the same time sits visible in the corner of the stream like the gamer and responds live, verbally, to text chat in exactly the same way. So they could field requests (and maybe the queue of upcoming vids is also visible, so it can be messed about with - a vid inserted or deleted if chat has a strong opinion.

Perhaps this is (or resembles) what Apple is planning with Zane Lowe. I hope so, because it'd be a kick-arse way to take the online video viewing habits of music fans to a new level.

But for now: anybody building a career anywhere in the arts or communications should have at least a topline look at Twitch with an uncynical eye because nobody - absolutely nobody - is communicating with their fanbase on the same level as these streamers.
