Naomi Campbell has been given a six-month suspended prison sentence, after being found guilty of assaulting a photographer, back in 2009, it has been reported.

SEE MORE:

According to The Telegraph, the verdict was delivered on Friday, over an incident where the supermodel is said to have hit a photographer with her bag, who had been taking photos of her and then-boyfriend Russian billionaire Vladimir Doronin.

As reported by the newspaper, the incident scratched the photographer’s eye, leaving him in need of medical treatment, which took three days to recover from, the court heard.

Naomi’s lawyer, Guido Carlo Alleva, has said in a statement to E! News that they intend to appeal the sentence, explaining: "We are appealing the ruling surrounding the 2009 incident. Due to the ongoing legal process, we cannot discuss the matter further at this time."

Although she reached an agreement with the snapper and he withdrew the charges, The Telegraph cites Italian news agency Ansa as saying that the prosecutor, Francesco Massara, ordered the trial to go ahead, insisting it was “in the public interest” because of the charges’ serious nature.

Back in 2007, Naomi pleaded guilty to separate assault charges, over an incident involving a member of her staff, for which she had to complete a five-day community service stint, as well as having to complete anger management classes and pay a fine to cover the victim’s medical bills.

Country music star Lynn Anderson has died, at the age of 67.

Lynn was best known to music-lovers for her hit ‘(I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden’ which reached the number-three spot in the UK singles chart when it was released in 1971.

The singer died in hospital in Nashville on Thursday, after suffering a heart attack. She had been hospitalised when she contracted pneumonia, following a trip to Italy.

Her fellow country singer Dolly Parton is among those to have paid tribute to Lynn, saying: “Lynn is blooming in God's Rose Garden now. We will miss her and remember her fondly."

Over the course of her career in the music, which spanned almost 50 years, Lynn scooped a handful of impressive accolades, including a coveted Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance in 1971, for her hit, ‘Rose Garden’.

Among her other well-known tracks are such songs as ‘How Can I Unlove You’, ‘Listen To A Country Song’ and ‘What A Man My Man Is’.

Lynn’s final album, ‘The Bluegrass Sessions’, was released in 2004, featuring re-recorded versions of her hits, as well as her own take on The Drifters’ ‘Under The Boardwalk’.

The collection also earned Lynn her final Grammy nod, after she was nominated in the Best Bluegrass Album category, her first nomination in over 30 years.

She was married twice in her life, first to country singer/songwriter Glenn Sutton, with whom she has a daughter, Lisa. Lynn was later married to oilman Harold “Spook” Stream, and together they had two children, Melissa and Gray.

At the time of her death, Lynn was in a relationship with songwriter and music producer, Mentor Williams.

'X Factor' 2015: Ryan Ruckledge 'Kicked Off Show At Bootcamp, After Night Of Hard Partying'

The ‘X Factor’ judges reportedly let one hopeful have it at Bootcamp, after he took advantage of the free booze on offer.

MORE 'X FACTOR':

The Mirror have reported that among this year’s auditionees is Ryan Ruckledge, who you might remember from his appearance on ‘This Morning’ earlier this year, where he revealed he’d “rather die” than give up his illegal false tanning injections.

After making it through the first round of this year’s competition, Ryan made it through to Bootcamp, but it sounds like his night of partying, courtesy of ‘X Factor’ producers, might have rubbed the judges up the wrong way.

It was reported earlier this year that producers had moved the Bootcamp stage of this year’s ‘X Factor’ from Wembley Arena to a stately home, with the hope that the contestants might cut loose and create some drama.

Unfortunately, it sounds like Ryan might have taken it a step too far, with a source telling The Mirror: “He really made the most of the free bar. Loads of people skipped the party altogether to keep a clear head – and that meant there were extra drinks going spare.

“Ryan was propping up the bar until the early hours. The next day, while his group were rehearsing, Ryan went AWOL.

"He kept disappearing off to nurse his hangover and was moping around like a bear with a sore head.”

Sadly, it sounds like his partying might have cost him his spot in the competition, with the source continuing: “When he got in front of the judges, they all noticed immediately that he was out of sync and under-prepared.

"One by one, they all called him on it. They told him he was unprofessional and could have cost other people their place.

“When they kicked him out, they told him it was karma for his bad behaviour.”

It was reported last month that one of this year’s aspiring ‘X Factor’ singers had been given the boot, after producers discovered she had a history of appearing in adult films.

Declan Donnelly, best known as one half of TV presenting duo Ant and Dec, married his long-term partner, Ali Astall on Saturday afternoon.

The wedding was a family affair, with Dec’s brother Father Dermott Donnelly conducting the service, at St. Michael's church in Newcastle, where Dec was born and raised.

Ant McPartlin, who has co-presented the likes of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, ‘Saturday Night Takeaway’ and ‘Pop Idol’ with Dec over the years, unsurprisingly acted as best man, with the two presenters together in matching suits before the ceremony began.

Ali has photographed on her way into the ceremony shortly before it began, looking gorgeous in her white Phillipa Lepley gown, before joining her new husband on the way out of their big day.

A source tells The Sun: “It felt right for him to go back to Newcastle because Dec is such a proud Geordie. Dec always wanted to get married before he turned 40, which happens next month.

“The fact that he’s waited so long to marry shows how serious he is about marriage vows, but he has absolutely no doubts that Ali is The One.”

Among the famous guests in attendance are Holly Willoughby, Ben Shephard and ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ host Tess Daly, as well as members of both the bride and groom’s family.

Dec and Ali announced their engagement at the tail-end of last year, after he proposed to her in Australia, where she was joining him while he filmed the latest series of ‘I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here’.

The pair knew each other for over a decade before becoming an item, as Ali had previously worked as a talent manager for Ant and Dec.

Congrats to the happy couple!

Bend It Like Beckham Musical Star Preeya Kalidas Talks Culture, Community and Career

$

So Bend it like Beckham is the feel-good new modern British musical which has been doing really well in London's West end this past few weeks, with its now familiar story of a two sisters (Jess and Pinky), living in a family in Southall Broadway, the buzzing hubbub of Asian families socializing, shopping and gossiping about each other, all set amongst the backdrop of Asian store brands like Royal Sweets, Sagoos, Madhus. Southall Discount Tyres and more.

Jess needs extra time. She is facing the most important decision of her life: live up to family expectations of university, career and marriage, or follow in the footsteps of her hero David Beckham. When the talented teenager is spotted playing football in Southall, a world of unexpected opportunities opens up before her. But as her sister Pinky's traditional Indian wedding approaches, can she keep her family happy and still follow her dreams?

BILB2

Jokes about Asian females hairy lip lines, whole houses ablaze with twinkling fairy lights for weddings, passions for mani-pedi, facials and boyfriends reign...unless you are young Jess who adores the sport of football and alongside her footie best pal Jules, has to lie to her family in order to join in with the local Hounslow Harriers ladies football club.

It's a perfect musical for all the family, especially if you love football; like the footie version of Westside story but with big song and dance musical numbers sung in an Indian accent, like the infectious "girl perfect". The live band on the balcony juxtaposed with the catchy songs sprinkled throughout will have you bopping in your seats all night.

preeya

Most impressive is the massive powerhouse voice hiding inside the petite body of actress and singer Preeya Kalidas, who often stole the show as she belted out songs and danced up a storm.

‎In amongst all the Indian clichés, issues and jokes about fair skin vs darker skin ''look how dark you've become'', Indian mothers emphasis on teaching their daughters to cook and ''not being seen outdoors with any old man'', were more touching, deeply sensitive issues about the generations born abroad and born here just not understanding each other. ‎

There were even nods to indigenous white families not understanding each other's lives, ambitions and values anymore. It was particularly poignant watching and relating to the struggle between young peoples dreams and their 'duty'.

After the show, I caught up with Preeya in her dressing room for a chat, and asked her how she thinks Indian themed musicals making more of their mark on the west end stage have faired recently?

Preeya; (the fact that they're) Indian themed musicals, is what sets them apart from any other show, and makes for an interesting cultural fusion, particularly musically, which audiences seem to really love and enjoy.

Jasmine; You played a different role in the film/ musical- tell us about that?
Preeya; I played the role of Monica, the cousin of football mad Jess. Monica is your typical Asian west London type who actually wants to be Pinky, Jess's sister, the role of which I am playing now.

Jasmine; BILB is based in Southall - it's managed to stay respectful and funny instead of offensive and stereotypical- was that important to you all?
Preeya; Absolutely. I strive to be part of projects that represent our community in a positive light and not to focus on the one-dimensional aspect. Bend it like Beckham has all the right ingredients that audiences can relate like cultural conflicts of generations portrayed in a realistic manner that will make you laugh, but also make you recognise the experiences.

Jasmine; Tell us about your role-playing Pinky- and explain the nickname Pinky to those unfamiliar with Asian culture?
Preeya; Pinky is the complete opposite of tomboy Jess who dreams of playing football, whereas Pinky dreams of getting married and having the perfect family setup. She is a fun loving energetic, juicy couture wearing, typical Southall girl. Her name Pinky is actually a typical Panjabi name meaning Most Beautiful; Pink Coloured; Sweet; but having also discussed this with Gurinder Chadha - our director - her real name is probably something like Paramdeep, but its typical to have such names shortened ...and also the fact that she loves wearing pink!

Jasmine; Even though you don't play the main lead role, you've managed to steal the limelight in the musical, how have you managed to shine - but not too much?
Preeya; Ah thank you for your kind words! I have had a wonderful time re creating the character for the musical and Pinky is a great character to play, I just thoroughly enjoy myself on stage and its refreshing for me to get the opportunity to do comedy, sing, dance and act all in one production!

Jasmine; What kind of statement do you think the success of this musical has had on the west end and on an Asian cast?
Preeya; The last successful west end musical with a British Asian cast was AR Rahman's Bombay Dreams, produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which I had the wonderful opportunity to play the lead in. It was groundbreaking and of its time for many reasons; one being the fact it represented the Asian community and gave us a voice. Bend it like Beckham is now doing the same thing but representitive of the British Asian community (Bombay dreams was set in India).

TV, Film and Stage are fantastic outlets to change perceptions of ethnic communities and it is important that there are more opportunities for this to happen. Gurinder Chadha is a real pioneer of representing the Asian community to a mainstream audience. She lets them into a world that they may not know but in actual fact will find that they can completely relate. I suppose that's why Bend it Like Beckham is so special, for that reason.

Jasmine; How difficult is it securing roles that aren't focused around your ethnicity and how engaged do you get in all the industry 'diversity' conversations?
Preeya; I have been lucky in that I have played roles that aren't specific in ethnicity, there are certain casting directors and producers who are open minded and will focus on talent, which is fantastic, but there is still a long way to go. I also love playing roles that represent my community, as long as they are interesting stories and not one-dimensional characters. I engage in 'diversity" conversations with my peers as there is a lot of frustrated talent out there. We can talk as much as we want, but action would be more conducive, I say lets get writing and tell the stories we want to tell!

Jasmine; What's your biggest challenge as 'Preeya Kalidas' in the showbiz world?
Preeya; I think anyone that steps foot into this industry will face a number of challenges. Being put in a box is a big problem in the entertainment biz, but for me I strive to stay out of the box, which is why I have managed to have a diverse career in film, TV and stage.

Jasmine; What one thing do you want people to know that might surprise them about you?
Preeya; I cook???!!! Tasty meals...ha!

Jasmine; You've always juggled both acting and music equally - tell us about that journey now in 2015? How easy / difficult is it? Is this genre your perfect career fit?
Preeya; It's down to you to keep pushing and find people who believe in what you do and can do, that's the task. It's a perfect fit for now but who knows what the future holds.

Jasmine; Any other separate music and acting updates we can expect from you in the future?
Preeya; There is always something Kooking in the Kalidas world, I am on a constant creative journey. Follow me on twitter and you can keep up to date @PREEYAKALIDAS ;)
(OMG she's gone all K K K K Kardashian!).

12 WOMAD Festival 2015 Highlights

WOMAD 2015 was rather uncharacteristically muddy and wet. It was also full of characteristically brilliant music, from artists both well known and loved and unheard of and obscure, from all over the world. Here are some highlights.

  1. Watching the Mahotella Queens from South Africa, one of whom is in her seventies, reach feats of flexibility and pace with their dancing that my 30 year old body can only dream of.

  2. The irresistible drumming of Ghanain master drummers Kakatsitsi, whom we saw twice and both times fell hopelessly prey to their beats, chants and dances, as did the crowd around us. A hit with the kids too.

  3. Watching our three year old experiment with sound in the wonderful woodland Gamelan in the Arboretum. Like every year the kids programme is expertly curated and spot on for kids of all ages. Case in point- they have a group of between 4-6 people painting faces all weekend. Kid heaven.

  4. The two kids who stripped to their pants and went mud diving on Sunday. Pure joy.

  5. Singing (badly) along with Ibeyi, a French/cuban duo who sing in Yoruba, to whom i'd been introduced by Giles Peterson on 6 Music. They met then surpassed my expectations with flawless blood harmonies and brilliant percussion- but then thats not surprising with the late Buena Vista Social Club Conga player Miguel 'Anga' Diaz as their father.

  6. Sinking into the voices of The Staves, another musical high point for me. Their performance was exquisite, stripped back and delicate; completely beguiling.

  7. My husband, our three year old and I dancing our butts off to The Correspondents who returned to WOMAD this year with live band in tow. It's hard not too; their mash up of drum n bass, jazz, blues and electro is addictive.

  8. The whole crowd at the De La Soul gig belting out the Ring Ring lyrics at the top of their lungs, in the rain and the dark. (Hey, how you doing, sorry you can't get through..." )

  9. Shopping! There is always a huge array of shops selling wares from around the world, many of whom work ethically with co-ops directly. From hand woven baskets to hand dyed tunics and dresses, musical instruments and jewellery, the shopping is second to none, and always a highlight. I always return with lots of gorgeous props for my interior styling work.

  10. Dancing in the (very welcome) sun to Bangra funk band Red Baraat from Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon. It's eclectic mix of punjabi wedding music, jazz and hiphop(amongst other styles!) had crowds of dancing people spilling out of the tent. Another big hit with the grown ups and kids alike.

  11. Whizzing around and up and down on the steam powered 'planes' at the fair ground with my daughter. Carters Steam Fair has been at WOMAD since I first started attending and is always a family favourite.

  12. Huddling under our leaky awning in the rain, a welcome hot cup of tea in hand. The friend who I've been going to WOMAD with since we were 14 next to me, watching our babies play together.

Schlepping around the site with buggies and the like is much harder work in the rain but it was still wonderful. I'd just be lying if i said i wasn't hoping for more sunshine next year...

Were you there? What were your highlights?

With tensions running so high in 'EastEnders', you'd think youngster Bobby Beale might have worked out something was seriously wrong by now - but he hasn't.

Now, following Max's arrest, Bobby is convinced Jake Wood's character it responsible, and Cindy catches him trying to get revenge, just about stopping him from putting a brick through the businessman's car window.

If Zayn Malik was bothered by his former One Direction bandmates stealing his thunder with their new single, he certainly wasn’t showing it.

SEE MORE:

Earlier this week, Zayn revealed that, having parted ways with Simon Cowell’s Syco record label, he had signed a new solo deal with RCA Records, admitting he was looking forward to releasing some “real music”.

However, before the dust had even settled, 1D were not letting anyone forget about their already-tight grasp on the pop charts, by pulling a Beyoncé on us all by surprise-releasing their new track, ‘Drag Me Down’.

The single has so far been well-received by critics, and topped the iTunes chart in a staggering 82 different countries since its surprise release on Friday, with even Zayn now chipping in to praise the track.

Writing on his official Twitter page late on Saturday night, Zayn described ‘Drag Me Down’ as “sick”, adding: “Proud of my boys… big love.”

While music mogul Simon Cowell was quick to congratulate Zayn on his new record deal earlier this week, one of Zayn’s former pals was less forthcoming with his feelings, with his former collaborator Naughty Boy - who he famously fell out with last month - keeping schtum about the whole thing.

Although the music producer was initially thought to be mates with Zayn, last month things between them appeared to have turned sour, after the former 1D singer branded him a “fat joke” on Twitter, criticising his abilities as a producer and publicly asking him to “stop pretending we’re friends”.

‘Coronation Street’ bosses were said to be unimpressed with Jack P Shepherd, after he turned up to the show's set minus one of his eyebrows, following an unfortunate accident.

SEE MORE:

The soap actor, who has played David Platt on ‘Corrie’ since he was 12 years old, is said to have been juggling with fire at a friend’s party, when his T-shirt unfortunately caught ablaze.

According to The Sun, it was up to a fellow party-goer to put out the fire, which they were able to do before it led to anything more serious.

Luckily, Jack didn’t suffer any serious burns - though it did unfortunately cost him the eyebrows and eyelashes on one side of his face, which he accidentally singed off during the incident.

A source tells the newspaper: “[‘Corrie’ bosses] found out because Jack turned up on set missing his eyebrow and eyelashes.

“He told them he’d done it at a kids’ party. But they weren’t too impressed with him.”

Jack recently made headlines for a photo he posted on his Twitter page, where he pretended to have a wee on the iconic ‘Emmerdale’ sign, during a party on the set of the rival soap.

Clearly sensing that the photograph may have been a bit ill-advised, it quickly disappeared from his social media account, but not before eagle-eyed followers got the chance to screengrab it and share it online.

However, 'Emmerdale' actress Charlie Hardwick was quick to jump to Jack's defence, insisting he was just having a harmless laugh with the picture.

Speaking to reporters outside of Saint James United Methodist Church, where the funeral was held, Leolah claimed: “I didn't like that, so I left... I just told her that Whitney is going to haunt her from the grave.”

She also suggested the feud between both sides of Bobbi Kristina’s family was showing no signs of quieting down, insisting: “It’s just getting started.”

Axed 'Hollyoaks' Actress Stephanie Davis: 'I've Been Drinking Too Much And Using Alcohol As An Escape... But I Didn't Show Up To Work Drunk'

‘Hollyoaks’ actress Stephanie Davis has admitted that she has been “drinking too much” as of late, following her much-publicised exit from the soap.

SEE MORE:

Stephanie has denied suggestions in the media that she turned up to work drunk, leading to her being fired from the Channel 4 series, though she has admitted to using alcohol binges to cope with the pressures of work.

In an emotional new interview with The Mirror, she reveals: “I will hold my hands up and admit I’ve been drinking too much. I've been struggling for a while and booze was an escape for me.

"I usually worked six days a week. My only day off was a Thursday, but I went out most Friday and Saturdays.”

stephanie davis

Going into detail about her alcohol consumption, she explains: "Typically I'd share a bottle of prosecco with my friends, then I'd move on to vodka, lime and lemonades. I'd end the night with a few shots of tequila."

She goes on to say that the final straw for show bosses came when she walked off the set in the middle of a day of shooting, pushing them to terminate her contract, five years after making her debut on ‘Hollyoaks’.

Stephanie - who first rose to prominence on the musical theatre reality series 'Over The Rainbow' - admits: “I had my make-up done then I just said to one of my castmates, I can’t do this.

“I said I was going to go home. People tried to stop me and warn me about the consequences. But I said, ‘I don’t care’. I just wasn’t thinking straight.”

The actress also took the opportunity to apologise publicly to ‘Hollyoaks’ bosses for her behaviour, claiming she felt “suffocated” by her soap role.

She adds: “I think because I played Sinead 24/7, the only time I’d be me is when I was getting into bed.

"Even then I’d be thinking about my script the next day. I even had my tea watching Hollyoaks. I felt suffocated.

"I honestly don’t have a serious drink problem. I’m a normal 22-year-old girl. I like to have a good time but I know my limits. Now I want the world to see who I really am.”

Last month, Stephanie thanked her fans for their support, after the news broke that she had been sacked, tweeting: “I would like to thank all of the fans for your continued support and not believing everything you read.

“I'm excited to embark on a new adventure and already excited with things to come! U guys have been amazing and I love you all!!!”

She topped the UK singles chart a number of times, and had a string of hits to her name, including ‘Step Inside Love’, ‘Alfie’ and ‘Anyone Had A Heart’, which became one of her signature tunes.

Cilla Black Dead: From Beatles To 'Blind Date', We Remember One Of Britain's Best-Loved Entertainers In Vintage Pictures

Cilla Black, whose death this weekend, has come as a huge shock to her many fans, enjoyed more than half a century at the top of British showbusiness, which saw her moving from Liverpool's Cavern Club where she sang alongside the Beatles, to becoming the queen of TV's light entertainment.

READ MORE:

She had two number one singles, including the belter 'Anyone Who Had A Heart' - written by Burt Bacharach - and 'You're My World', and was always championed by her fellow Liverpudlians, The Beatles, and Gerry and the Pacemakers.

In total, she had eleven Top Ten hits between 1964 and 1971.

What set her apart from other 1960s popular singers, though, was her shrewdness and ability to adapt herself for a completely new audience. As her singing career waned, she increasingly reinvented herself in the 1980s with TV shows 'Cilla', 'Blind Date' and 'Surprise Surprise', whose overwhelming success ensured her unique status in the history of popular entertainment.

Last year saw her collect a BAFTA for her outstanding contribution to entertainment, when she said, "I am thrilled to be honoured with this award - I am totally delighted. I've been very fortunate to have a long and full career in television and this means the world to me."

Last year saw her life in Liverpool, romance with her late husband Bobby Willis and the rollercoaster of her career covered in the biopic 'Cilla', where she was played by Sheridan Smith. The three-parter showed how hard she had had to work, and how she overcame the tragic death of her manager Brian Epstein, to forge her place in British culture.

The writer of that drama, Jeff Pope, told HuffPostUK last year that Cilla had had to psyche herself up to watch the story of her life on screen, but that she'd been very honest with him when they sat down together to discuss what route the story should take.

"She admitted she was ruthless,” said Jeff. “But she had to be."

Following the death of her beloved husband Bobby, who'd also been her tireless and devoted manager since their courting days in Liverpool, Cilla had turned to her family for support, with her eldest son taking over the business side of her career. She also relied on her friends, including Christopher Biggins and Cliff Richard, whom she'd repaid by defending him passionately in the last year, when he faced a police investigation.

“Apart from her hearing she was alright. We had a week together in Barbados at the beginning of the year and I saw her on my birthday.

“I thought she was well. I can’t believe it to tell you the truth.”

As well as their friendship away from the spotlight, the pair appeared on screen together on numerous occasions, with Paul even presenting the retrospective show, ‘The One And Only Cilla Black’, which commemorated her 60th year in showbiz.

They also infamously performed together at the Royal Variety Performance, alongside Babara Windsor, with Paul in character as his drag alter-ego, Lily Savage.

He adds: “I kept telling her she’d outlive us all. She’s such a strong lady.”

Nepal Earthquakes: A Race Against Time

In the first of two blog posts, Jo Joyner writes about her trip to Nepal where she met communities severely affected by the recent earthquakes.

The earthquake that hit Nepal on 25 April killed almost 9,000 people, brought over 600,000 houses tumbling to the ground and tore apart the lives of millions. Before travelling to Nepal with the charity CAFOD, I had very little knowledge of the country - and I wasn't sure what to expect.

Kathmandu - where we were staying - is a busy city. Traffic weaves between the locals who are completely unfazed. A lot of crazy wires and power cables that I'm glad I don't have to make sense of are used by monkeys as a highway. In the new part of town the destruction from the earthquake is not immediately evident. But in the old town, many of the ancient temples that survived the last major earthquake in the 1930s have been destroyed.

The day after we arrived, we travelled east out of Kathmandu for around three hours into the Kavrepalanchok region. As we drove into the mountains, the roads became more bumpy, neglected and precarious. As a control freak and a back seat driver, overtaking buses or cows on the hairpin corners was well out of my comfort zone!

During our journey we had to stop briefly as people cleared a landslide. The earthquake had dislodged soil and rocks from the mountain, and I could see how these mud roads would quickly become impassable during the fast-approaching monsoon season. The team from CAFOD's local partner Caritas Nepal told me that once the monsoon hits, there can sometimes be torrential rain for 10 days solid.

We were heading for the village of Chandanimandan to see how the earthquake had impacted remote communities, and to support Caritas Nepal handing out packs of corrugated iron to help people build shelters before the monsoon. When we arrived, the villagers were waiting for us peacefully, but as I looked at what remained of their houses I worried about the huge task they had ahead of them and wondered where they would begin.

I met Mishri, aged 74, small, slim and dressed traditionally. Despite all that she had been through she had a twinkle in her eye. She told me about the day that "the earth moved" when she was inside her house and it collapsed around her.

She said she didn't remember how she managed to crawl out from under the rubble and lie outside. "I felt as if my soul had left me," she said. "I just stayed there, I didn't move and I waited for the earth to stop shaking."

She told me that she had thought that the Gods must be angry with them, but when Caritas Nepal arrived with help she felt that they must have been forgiven. She'd had no idea that people would come looking for them.

Next I met Rama, 53, a lady with a smile as bright as her traditional red sari. She was working in the fields when the earthquake hit. When the earth started to rumble beneath her feet she ran home with the ground still shaking. She checked on her two grown children and three grandchildren, thankfully all safe, but she lost two cows and five goats.

The loss of animals is hugely significant to farmers like Rama and her husband. Not only do they provide an income and milk, but they are also an important part of spiritual life in the community. After the earthquake, Rama spent three days digging through the rubble to rescue one of her few remaining calves.

Finally I met Luma, an 83-year-old woman with an incredible face whose lines told a million stories. In her case, the devastation was clear to see. Luma's five sons had all built their homes alongside that of their mother and nothing remained of any of the buildings.

I got a strong sense that Luma had done everything right in her life and had tried so hard to make a stable future for her family. She told me she had saved for years to supplement her pension. She had kept her gold ring and gold necklace so that she would have some money should the worst ever happen. The worst had happened and it shattered around her modest possessions. Three months on and they're buried, deep amongst the rubble with little hope of ever being found.

Jo Joyner meets Luma Kumari Nepal, 83, whose life savings - money and jewellery - were inside her home when it collapsed. CAFOD/Bikash Khadge

The brave women I met were in a dire situation. They needed to salvage as much brick, rubble and corrugated sheeting as possible in order to rebuild their homes - and to search for their valuable possessions before the monsoon rain washed them away. This salvaging and rebuilding all takes time and energy that they don't have. They are living a hand-to-mouth existence; if they don't work the land they have no money and no food - and they also have to cook, tend the animals, clean clothes and care for the children.

CAFOD and Caritas Nepal began delivering aid within hours of the first earthquake striking. Some of the Caritas aid workers I met had lost their own houses in the earthquakes. While their own families live in tents, they carry on delivering food and shelter to some of the most hard to reach areas. If the roads become blocked, they unload and carry the supplies, trekking through the mud for hours to reach those most in need. I was humbled to be among them as they carried out their work.

Over the past three months, they have provided life-saving food, water, and shelter to nearly 300,000 people. But with the monsoon worsening, and with so many people like Mishri, Rama and Luma left with virtually nothing, it is a race against time to reach all those in need.

'X Factor' 2015: Judges Simon Cowell And Cheryl Fernandez-Versini Are 'Still Arguing' On The Panel

Anyone thinking that the long-standing rivalry between Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and Simon Cowell might be dying down after all these years can think again, as the ‘X Factor’ judges are feuding once more.

SEE MORE:

Filming for this year’s auditions wrapped up last month, and while the new series will see the show undergoing a few changes, the one thing that isn’t going anywhere is Cheryl and Simon’s back-and-forth on the panel.

Speaking to The Sun, the ‘I Don’t Care’ singer admits: “Me and Simon are still rowing. He knows which buttons to press.

“Sometimes I want to move away from him but he won’t let us change seats. He just really wants to wind me up to get a response.

“I don’t think I’ll throw glasses of water on him - I think those days are done. Maybe I’ll use a high heel. That can double up as a weapon, can’t it?”

However, she does suggest that their feud might only be for show (gosh, who’da thunk it, eh?), confessing: “Can I be honest with you? I love him dearly. I do.”

Simon, meanwhile, claims that him deliberately trying to get on Cheryl’s nerves is a “sign of affection”, insisting: “Secretly she finds it funny but she won’t admit it.

“The thing about Cheryl is that she’s so easy to wind up that I can’t stop myself, because it makes me laugh.”

Cheryl and Simon will both be returning to ‘The X Factor’ this autumn, alongside new judges Rita Ora and Nick Grimshaw.

On Monday night, the foursome will appear with new presenters Olly Murs and Caroline Flack in a brand new promo trailer, which proves, if nothing else, that Simon is ready to bring out the big guns for this year’s series.

More details have emerged about the final hours of entertainer Cilla Black, whose death was announced on Sunday afternoon.

Tributes have been pouring in for the longtime entertainer, following her death at her Spanish villa

Spanish police, investigating the circumstances, have already indicated they believe she died of natural causes, with the Daily Mail reporting that the police believe marks on her arm may be consistent with her trying to break her fall. One theory being examined is that she was overcome by the strong heat on the terrace, after the cooler temperature of her air-conditioned bedroom.

Results of the autopsy into her death are expected later today.

Cilla had flown from Gatwick to Spain with her son Robert on Friday. He had also been her manager since taking over duties from her late husband Bobby, who died in 1999.

Friends and fellow stars have been paying tribute to Cilla, who had enjoyed a fifty-year career, from her time in Liverpool, sharing the stage with her friends the Beatles, to her era as queen of primetime TV, when she presided over longtime hit shows 'Surprise Surprise' and 'Blind Date'.

One of her closest friends, Paul O'Grady, said yesterday that she had appeared recently in fine form, although suffering from impaired hearing and arthritis. He joined others in expressing his grief, saying, "God, I'll miss her."

Review: Ben Whishaw Stars in 'Bakkhai', Almeida Theatre

$

2015-08-02-1438540898-9588580-Bakkhai1.jpg

What I love most about the Almeida Theatre is the risks that it takes and, my god, its new production of the Greek tragedy, Bakkhai, is a massive, massive risk. At times it is one of the most impressive pieces of theatre I've seen; at other times it's completely insane. But one thing's for sure - I've never seen Greek tragedy done like this and it's a production that is impossible to forget.

The star draw is Ben Whishaw and, my, he oozes charisma and a beguiling erotic enticement as an effeminate and dangerous Dinoysus, the self-proclaimed God of wine, madness and ecstasy. Seductive and sensual, arrogant and manipulative, Ben's complete ease with the power in his hands blends dangerously with his wickedly, playful spirit. It's a tempting, tantalising performance.

And he is given the perfect adversary in Bertie Carvel's alpha male - the smooth-talking but ruthless Pentheus, a King so obsessed with order he has no qualms with throwing his own mother into jail for questioning his autocracy.

2015-08-02-1438541023-4342622-Bakkhai2.jpg

These two dictators, so similar yet so different, circle each other, adamant that only one can rule. And their battleground is Thebes, personified by the Chorus - the women, overwhelmed with fanatical devotion, who have fled Thebes for the arms of the God that walks amongst them.

Watching this power play build up to its denouement is the big hook so it's brave stuff from Director James Macdonald to stick with Euripides' intentions and give the Chorus the far greater stage time. Their chanting, swaying and almost haunting single voice both scare and serenade. It's a clever way to manipulate the pacing of the show, keeping us waiting, balancing out the tension of the main battle.

For 90 minutes this production is scintillating. The translation from Anne Carson is daring and contemporary. Its blend of dramatic text and witty colloquialism is effortless and a real highlight. The staging is superb and the acting is awesome - some of the finest performances you will see this year.

2015-08-02-1438541092-8311283-Bakkhai3.jpg

Ben Whishaw mesmerises and Bertie Carvel is incisive and brilliant. But special mention must also go to the magnificent Kevin Harvey, who excels in a myriad of supporting roles, and the women of the Chorus who captivate completely.

But then Bakkhai descends into complete madness and the whole production just goes... well, for a while I didn't know where it was going. The great battle between these two men never materialises, Pentheus too easily outwitted. Ben Whishaw, shorn of the long locks of Dionysus, scampers onto the stage as (seemingly) another character, the Chorus whip themselves into an unbridled frenzy - stamping and shrieking as if possessed - and Bertie Carvel takes to the stage as some mad, dragged-up version of Gaga cradling a decapitated head - his own.

It's at this point that you just think - what? What happened?? Why has everyone gone completely mad?

2015-08-02-1438541162-64496-Bakkhai4.jpg

But hang with this, hang in there. Because it's incredibly brave that James Macdonald chooses not to take his foot of the brakes here. If you are going to depict hysteria, you've got to commit to it 100% and that is exactly what this production does.

Because it is this madness, this religious fervour and the destruction and havoc that it can wreak that is the central subject in Euripides' writing - not the power play. What is the difference between the gods and men? If gods are as vengeful and bloodthirsty as men then we should not worship them. Blood lust is not godly and should not be craved. Madness is dangerous. Religion and violence should never go hand in hand.

Bakkhai is a stunning production - and it is a production that stuns. It may well end up being one of the most divisive productions of the year - some will give it five stars, others will come out dazed and confused. But either way, this production will stay with you and, given the time to take it all in, slowly you realise you have witnessed a truly original piece of staging. Brave and quite brilliant. May theatre never stop taking risks.

"More Astounds For Your Pound" - Mission:Impossible - Rogue Nation Review

$
0
0
A list blockbusters are essentially operas - larger than life with colourful characters, exotic backdrops and a rhythm to the storytelling that ebbs and flows in all the right places.

Perhaps most importantly the third act should reach a crescendo before ebbing into the closing titles.
And the Viennese opera is the backdrop for one of the best action scenes of the year as IMF agent Ethan Hunt attempts to stop an assassination.

Yes, it's MI5, aka Mission Impossible Rogue Nation, the latest chapter in the blockbusting franchise loosely based on Bruce Geller's 1960s TV show.

Any fan of the film saga will know what they are getting from the outset.
Great stunts, exotic locations, Tom Cruise dropping into a perilous situation, that superb Lalo Schifrin title theme, and quite obviously, masks.

After the disappointing Ghost Protocol a few years ago, I thought the series had run its course, having improved with each chapter... until part four.

However, writer and director Christopher McQuarrie, who Cruise had worked with on Jack Reacher, has helped breathe new life into the franchise with one of the best chapters so far.

Following that outstanding pre-credits stunt involving Cruise hanging on the side of a transporter aircraft, we are back in London and Hunt going through the motions of accepting a new mission, should he choose to accept it... only with a twist.

When things go pear-shaped and Hunt is captured by an anti IMF organisation called the Syndicate, Ethan is assisted by a femme fatale.

Rebecca Ferguson is outstanding as Ilsa Faust, the strongest female character in the series. Sexy, intelligent and a match for Cruise. The fact she looks like Hunt's old flame (Michelle Monaghan) is a clever touch, as is the visual rabbit's foot cue, a throwback to MI3.

Following that superb opera set piece (the highlight of all the movies) and the brilliant underwater data card swap, things plateau with a chase through Casablanca.

That third act is more problematic - bags of exposition, generic foot chases and 20 minutes too long.

It's not a deal breaker. There's enough good stuff that came before to make the final half hour bearable, but just a shame the wordy internecine shenanigans didn't come in the middle and the chase at the end.

The other key problem is Ving Rhames - wasted as returning IMF agent Luther (essentially Simon Pegg's Benji has usurped him as the hi-tech aid; his comic timing as valuable as ever, while adding a sense of much needed gravitas).

Rhames looks redundant with little to do except flick a few buttons, offer some exposition and be the thread that connects the other movies.

Thankfully Jeremy Renner is terrific in support, as is Alec Baldwin as the obligatory government official.
Top turns are also offered by Tom Hollander and Simon McBurney.

However, as much as I was mesmerised by Sean Harris in Harry Brown, here he just looks like a malevolent Sean Lock as the generic villain.

There's also a lack of other decent female characters - either one sacrificial pawn (as with Bond) or the morally dubious Faust.

Cruise always delivers with movies like this, offering more astounds for your pound, but with a relatively weak opening compared to the other MI entries, one wonders if the inevitable MI6 will be the series finale.
