Mel Gibson Defends Shia LaBeouf Over His Arrest For Disorderly Conduct And Alcoholism

Mel Gibson has spoken in defence of Shia LaBeouf, who is reportedly receiving treatment for his addiction to alcohol.

The announcement that Shia was seeking help to overcome his addiction came just days after he made headlines when he was arrested for disorderly conduct in New York, after reportedly disturbing a performance of ‘Cabaret’ on Broadway with his erratic behaviour.

Mel, whose own alcoholism has landed him in trouble over the course of his career, has now publicly lent the actor his support, claiming that Shia’s bizarre behaviour is probably rooted in something more serious.

Referencing Shia's infamous appearance at the 'Nymphomaniac' premiere, where he showed up wearing a bag over his head with 'I Am Not Famous Anymore' written on it, Mel told Indiewire: “When I see someone like Shia LaBeouf with the bag on his head and stuff, my heart goes out to the poor guy.

“It's easy to judge. But I'm sure he's going through some kind of personal, very painful, cathartic thing that he has to exorcise and get out there. He'll probably play it out and come back… whatever it happens to be.”

However, although things in Shia’s personal life may have taken a turn for the worse, Mel is optimistic for his future, adding: “He'll be all right. I actually like the kid. I think he's good.”

At the height of Mel’s personal problems in 2006, he was arrested for drink-driving and accused of anti-Semitism when he allegedly said to a police officer: “Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world. Are you a Jew?” - quotes which he later confirmed were accurate during a television interview.

His career took a nose-dive following the incident, though in 2012 he starred opposite Jodie Foster and Jennifer Lawrence in ‘The Beaver’, playing a troubled man who refuses to communicate apart from through a beaver hand-puppet.

Cher Lloyd Praises Cheryl Cole And States 'X Factor' 'Messed With Her Head'

Cher Lloyd has revealed that if she had a teenage daughter she wouldn’t allow her to audition for ‘The X Factor’, claiming that when she was on the show, aged just 16, she wasn’t emotionally ready for the experience.

Cher - who finished in fourth place behind One Direction in 2010 - was originally a hit with viewers after her performance of ‘Turn My Swag On’ at her audition, but reports of diva behaviour backstage made her less popular with the general public.

cher lloyd
Cher Lloyd

She’s now explained that she feels she was acting out as a coping mechanism, telling The Sun’s Fabulous magazine: “I felt like people thought there was something wrong with who I was... I behaved badly because that was the only way I could deal with it. If I had a 16-year-old daughter, I wouldn’t let her do a show like that. I wasn’t ready and it really messed with my head.”

While some viewers would agree with Cher's comment that some young people aren’t ready for the pressure that comes with starring on a TV talent contest, clearly Simon Cowell isn’t one of them as this year’s ‘X Factor’ marks the first time since 2007 that contestants as young as 14 will be able to sing in front of the panel.

Cher has also spoken about Cheryl Cole, who was her mentor during her ‘X Factor’ journey. Cheryl will return to the show later this year.

The two once had a close bond, but their relationship turned frosty after Cher publicly berated Cheryl in an interview.

However, Cher has clearly put their rift behind them, adding: “I've said some stupid things, been an idiot and Cheryl is one person I want to see and speak to. She is one woman I would go to for advice.”

You can read Cher’s interview in full in this week’s Fabulous magazine as part of The Sun on Sunday, on sale 13 July.

Holly Willoughby has issued a worrying warning to ‘This Morning’ co-presenter Phillip Schofield, telling him she could go into labour live on television.

The duo were making their final outing before taking their summer break when Holly, whose baby is due later this year, made the comments.

Holly and Phillip during Friday's 'This Morning'

Holly is currently planning to return to work at the end of summer, however, obviously if she gives birth before then, she won’t be returning to the show.

Holly has already spoke her plans to work for as long as possible during her pregnancy and during Friday’s ‘This Morning’, Holly and Phil addressed the fact that it could be their last show together for a while.

"I like it here on a Friday, it's buzzing on a Friday... and we're here because it's our last show before the summer holidays,” he said, before turning to Holly and stating: “And this could be your last show!"

Holly then explained that she is hoping to come back for a few weeks in September, which she realised things could get more than a little bit dramatic.

"It could be [my last show],” she said, adding: “[But] Belle was early, Belle was five weeks early, and Harry was two weeks early so I'm planning on coming back for a bit [from September]... But there's a huge possibility that I could go into labour in September on screen - that's always a possibility!"

Luckily for Holly, Phillip thinks he’s ready for any eventuality.

"Don't you worry,” he replied. “I've been here long enough to know what to do - I'm fully trained!"

"You're secretly hoping that's going to happen,” Holly replied. “But you won't even see my dust as I whizz out - contractions or not!"

Amanda will present 'This Morning' for the first half of Holly's maternity leave

It was recently announced that Amanda Holden and Christine Bleakley will stand in for Holly while she’s on maternity leave.

Holly and Phil have already taken to Twitter to congratulate the ladies, with Holly writing: “Hooray! Gorgeous girls @Amanda_Holden and @clbleakley keeping the sofa warm whilst I'm away having a baby…”

“Enjoy the best job in telly and look after the silver fox for me xxx,” she added.

Rochelle and Marvin Humes will fill in for Phil and Holly while they’re on their summer break.

How to Drink at a Festival

$
0
0
Never been to a festival? Or did you celebrate your 10th Glatso this year? BarChick has the best ways to get your booze on while still keeping it classy. It's all about the prep work, the ingredients and never leaving your tent without it... you'll never drink 6 quid warm cider again.
2014-07-11-july.latitued.jpg

FILL A HIPFLASK

Some festivals are into them, some festivals aren't, but the great thing about a hip flask is you can slip it in your pocket/take it into tents without the big guys seeing it! All you gotta to do is choose your poison. Here's BarChick's favourites:

Sloe Gin
BarChick's been drinking Sipsmith's Sloe Gin since it first surfaced! It's a concoction of their London Dry Gin and handpicked wild sloe berries. So if you're going to be drinking in the fields, a berry infused gin is just what we'd order for you.

Whiskey
It'll do the trick. Warming when the sun goes down and most importantly it's the ideal chaser to every beer you have!

Rum
Rum and parties go hand in hand, but instead of mixing it with Coca Cola in the tent, pour it straight into your hip flask and take it out for the night. We suggest Havana Club 7 Year Old, it's punchy enough for you to not drink it all at once and it tastes like Cuba (where it's made)... and if that ain't a party then we don't know what is.

Tequila
The ultimate wingman when the going gets tough.; if the fancy dress is starting to loose its laughs, a bit of tequila in your hipflask should help. Go for Ocho, it's big on the agave meaning its purity shouldn't lead to too nasty a hangover.

DRINKS TO MAKE IN YOUR TENT

It's cheaper than the bar, you'll never have to queue and it's a rain safe place to shelter when required. If you're capable of getting a tent up then you are more than able to fix up some of these.

Kalimotxo
Pronounced cal-ee-MO-cho, and also known as the Poor Man's Cuba Libre, the Kalimotxo is basically just a sloshy mix of red wine and cola, if you get any weird looks when knocking back a plastic cup of this you can assure your friends it's a Basque-country classic. If you close your eyes it could almost be sangria, only without all the fussy chopping and mixing.
Make it - Fill a cup with ice, combine equal parts red wine (the cheaper the better) and cola and squeeze in some lemon (or not)

Pickelbacks
Forget the vintage glasses or shaggy beard, nothing says hipster like the drink that Brooklyn invented; the Pickleback. But don't let that turn you off, the combination of a shot of whisky, followed by a shot of pickle brine is so perfectly balanced that you'll be quickly lining up for more. Only you won't actually need to line up as you'll be making them in your tent, easy peasy!
Make it - pour a shot of whisky (any will do but Jameson is the best) and another shot of pickle brine (sure you could make your own, but Funkin's new pre-made juice just nails it). Drink, repeat.
2014-07-11-Pickleback.credit.i.huffpost.com.jpg

Tommy's Margaritas
The modern-day alternative to the sugar filled original, the Tommy's is super easy to make, and it's pretty much the most summery drink in existence. Just pack some limes in your bag, along with a bottle of tequila and some agave syrup. Make sure you grab one of those Mexican elbow style citrus juicers too.
Make it - you could shake it in a shaker with ice, but you'll get the same result by just pouring 45ml tequila into a cup, throw in a handful of ice (you'll need to take a trip over to the bar for this one), squeeze in your lime and stir in the agave syrup.

Bloody Marys
Trust us, you'll be glad you prepared for these when it cures your first morning hangover. Pack some Tetra Pak tomato juice in your bag, and a bottle or two of vodka, along with some single serve packs of Little Devil's Bloody Spices. No need for fussing with all the many ingredients that go into the perfect Bloody Mary mix, these guys have done all that for you!
Make it - Mix one sachet of Bloody Spice with a shot of vodka, and some tomato juice. Garnish with celery and lime if you can be bothered.

PRE-BATCHED COCKTAILS TO MAKE BEFORE YOU GO

Get yourself sorted before you leave home by throwing together a couple of big bottles of tasty concoctions. For this to work avoid drinks involving fresh fruit juice and either make a nice strong cocktail that will last, or prep the boozy base of a fruity cocktail and get in the juice and ice when you're there!

Manhattans
Fill a 2 litre bottle with 1.2 litres rye whiskey, 520 ml sweet vermouth, 280ml filtered or bottled water (something neutral, not mineral water), serve with some orange wedges when you get there.
2014-07-11-manhattan1.jpg

Negronis
Whatever your bottle size this one's easy, just fill it with equal parts gin, Campari and sweet vermouth. Negronis taste better with ice, so try and track some down when you get there, and a twist of orange peel will make you look like a pro!

Chamomile Gimlets
This one will REALLY impress your neighbours. Pour your preferred measure of gin into a large bottle, with some lemon juice, a glug of sugar syrup, a few mint sprigs and a chamomile tea bag. When you get there pour it into some cups and top with a splash of soda, ice would be good if you can, but either way it works!

ACCESSORIES

GET THAT LIGHTER ON A LEASH - It costs less than a fiver off ebay and it will avoid you making lighter signs at every passer-by when you need one. It's also a magnet for new mates, if you need some.
2014-07-11-lighter.huffblog.jpg

GIANT HIP FLASK - because there's a big old festival out there and you don't want to be high and dry.
2014-07-11-gianthipflask.huffblog.jpg

TIPPLESWORTH COCKTAIL SUITCASE - for all you glampers out there, these sets are made in a 1920s suitcase factory and come with everything you need to make a Hibiscus Margarita/Apple & Elderflower Martini/Old Fashioned like a pro.
2014-07-11-cocktailcase.huffblog.jpg

UMBRELLA WITH CUP HOLDERS - we've got you covered even if it's p*ssing it down. Order yourself an umbrella but make sure it has some cup holders. Why have a beer when you can hold two AND stay dry.

Benefits Street Team To Turn Cameras Onto Issue Of Immigration

The team behind the controversial television show Benefits Street is turning its attention to immigration for a new series. The Channel 4 show, with a working title of Immigration Street, will be filmed in Southampton and shown next year.

Benefits Street, which followed the lives of people living on a Birmingham street, was a ratings hit and another series is in the pipeline it but was criticised for its portrayal of people living on the breadline. There were more than 900 complaints about the show, which prompted discussion in Parliament, but watchdog Ofcom said the broadcaster did not breach any of its responsibilities under the broadcasting code.

The new six-part series will be filmed on Derby Road in the Bevois district of Southampton which Channel 4 described as "an ethnically diverse street where the majority of residents were not born in the UK".

Channel 4's Head of Documentaries Nick Mirsky said: "Immigration is clearly an emotive issue dominating British politics and debates right now. Although the experience of the changes brought about by immigration will be different from place to place, we expect many of the themes that emerge from following life on Derby Road will resonate across the country.."

The series is set to air in early 2015.

Bring Back the Chair!

I attended a very special dinner a few weeks ago.

It was held at Jesus College and hosted by the Chancellor of the University of Oxford, Lord Patten. What made the evening so very memorable was the opportunity to view the Red Book of Hergest, one of the most important medieval manuscripts written in Welsh. This scholarly treasure is owned by my old college and usually kept in the University's Bodleian Library.

To view it at leisure, whilst sipping chilled champagne with the likes of Sian Phillips, Jan Morris and Huw Edwards, was not only a pleasure, but a huge privilege.

I squealed with pleasure when the invite landed on our doormat. Frankly, I love Oxford and will use any old excuse to go back and amble around my favourite English city. The architecture of those unique historic institutions, the beautiful boulevards, lovely little shops and caffs, all enchant me.

But there was a serious purpose to the visit. We were gathering to support the Jesus Chair of Celtic. The most recent holder, Professor Thomas Charles-Edwards, retired in September 2011. Due to pressure on funding, the University is unable to refill the Chair until an endowment of £2.64 million for the post has been raised. Oxford University wants to achieve this goal as soon as possible, and to have a new Chair in place no later than October 2017. A brain-storming session was the real purpose of our visit.

Oxford is the home of Celtic as an academic subject. The Jesus Chair itself was established in 1877, championed by the poet Matthew Arnold. It was the first Chair of Celtic in the world and is Oxford's oldest chair in a modern language. One of the reasons I wanted to study under Professor Ellis Evans, the post holder back in the eighties, was because Oxford was known as "the Welsh College". Between 1571 and 1915, an almost unbroken succession of Principals of Jesus came from Wales or were of Welsh decent. Twenty four all in all. In more recent times, the Catatonia song Every Day I Wake Up & Thank The Lord I'm Welsh, thumped out across the quad. And the joke goes, if the name Jones is shouted out, dozens of undergraduates respond....

As a proud Lloyd, it thrills me that the 17th century Welsh historian and linguist Edward Lhuyd, an alumnus of Jesus College and the second keeper of the Ashmolean Museum, actually coined the term 'Celtic' to describe languages comparatively. I feel privileged to have been accepted on said Celtic course. As a hat-tip to my namesake, I always make a point of visiting the brilliant Ashmolean when I return.

So forgive me if I'm rattling my charity can, but I really would love to see the Celtic Chair reinstated. It is, after all, the only one at an English University. And it's as vitally important for our English neighbours to understand their own Celtic heritage, and ours, as it is for them to understand the Romans or Normans. These are British texts, and to quote Welsh poet and author Owen Shears, "They form the very foundation of literature in these islands... and capture the transition from an oral to a written culture. They are also texts which embody some of the earliest imaginative renderings of our identity as a people and a place"

Hear hear Owen! THIS is why we need the Celtic Chair back where it belongs, at Jesus College Oxford.

Harry Potter’ actor Dave Legeno, who appeared as the villainous werewolf character Fenrir Greyback in the hit wizarding film series, has died at the age of 50.

The Mirror has confirmed that the actor, who was also a mixed martial arts expert, is thought to have died of heat-related issues while out hiking in the California desert. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Dave was discovered by a group of hikers on Sunday in Death Valley, California, with his agent confirming the news of his death on Friday afternoon.

As well as his role in three of the later films in the ‘Harry Potter’ series, Dave also took on grittier roles during his career such as in Guy Ritchie’s ‘Snatch’ and ‘Big Fat Gypsy Gangster’, also starring in ‘Snow White And The Huntsman’ opposite Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron.

In addition to his acting career, Dave was an accomplished fighter, and was an expert in boxing, wrestling, judo and Jiu-jitsu.

According to his IMDB page, he became a professional wrestler after studying performing arts in his younger years, which led to him landing his first film role in the gangster film ‘Snatch’. His wrestling name had been 'Lone Wolf', an interesting coincidence given the part he would go on to play in 'Harry Potter'. He had put his fighting career on hold after landing his part in the ‘Harry Potter’ films.

He is survived by one daughter, who is in her twenties.

‘Big Brother': Housemate Jale Leaves In Live Eviction As Steven And Kimberly Continue X-Rated Sex-capades (PICS)

Friday night’s ‘Big Brother’ should have been focussed on the eviction, which saw Jale leave the house, however, Kimberly and Steven’s sexy antics - by which we mean, going to final base - have continued to dominate the show.

Following the first ever power trip twist, Jale has been up for eviction every single week, and she commented to presenter Emma Willis that finally leaving left her felling “numb’, adding: “It’s surreal.”

Jale leaves the 'BB' house

Despite the fact, things haven’t been going smoothly for Stimberly, rows so far have included one over the fact Kimberly has a photo of her on-off boyfriend with her in the house, they’ve still got no problems with going the whole way… on national television.

Their antics have been noticed by a couple of other housemates, including Ash who labelled it "soft porn" and stated that he thinks they'll regret this when they're back in the outside world. Y'know, he's probably got a point.

However, the newly-evicted Jale had no idea what had been going on in the ‘BB’ bedroom, and when Emma revealed the truth about Steven and Kimberly’s late night cuddles, Jale was visibly shocked.

On Monday, Armageddon Week starts and bosses are promising plenty of explosive twists and turns, starting with a surprise eviction.

Housemates will have to nominate live on Monday evening, completely unaware that the housemate who receives the most votes will actually leave straight away, rather than face the public vote.

There will also be three new additions to the house and according to reports, Kimberly’s on-off boyfriend and Helen Wood’s love rival Jenny Thompson could be among them.

Tommy, an original member of the rock quartet, whose real name was Tommy Erdelyi, sadly died on Friday 11 July in New York City.

The news was confirmed by the official Ramones Twitter account, which shared a vintage snap of the star, with the words: “We are saddened to announce the passing of Ramones founding drummer Tommy (Erdelyi) Ramone. #RIPTommyRamone.“

It has been reported by the NY Daily News that Tommy was receiving hospice care shortly prior to his death.

Tommy played drums on the Ramones first three albums, before leaving the band in 1977 and pursuing a successful career as a music producer.

The three other original members of The Ramones all died in the early 2000s.

The Ramones are commonly considered to have pioneered punk music and they also paved the way for many acts that followed.

“The[ir] sound influenced thousands of bands, and proved so durable that the Ramones more or less stuck to it for their entire career,” reads a Rolling Stone feature on the band.

In March 2002, the Ramones, minus Joey Ramone who lost his life in 2001, were inducted into the Rock’n’Roll Hall Of Fame.

All four of the original band members changed their surname to Ramone, a name inspired by Paul McCartney’s brief stint as Paul Ramon.

What do White Dee, Julie Burchill and Stephanie Pratt have in common? Well, they’re all heading into the ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ house apparently.

White Dee is the latest name to appear on the ‘CBB’ 2014 potential housemates list and according to reports, she’ll even net £100k for making an appearance.

The controversial star would definitely ruffle feathers in the ‘BB’ house and let’s be honest, it would be quite interesting to see how she describes her ‘celebrity’ status to the other housemates.

A source has reportedly told The Sun: “Dee will be great on Celebrity Big Brother. She is used to sitting around the house all day long and being paid for it.”

Earlier this week, Dee revealed that she’s had so many offers of work - as in, celebrity appearances, not shifts in a supermarket - that she’s now no longer claiming benefits.

There has already been plenty of talk over who could be tasked with the job of somehow outshining the last lot of ‘CBB’ housemates and actor Gary Busey, ‘Googlebox’ star George Gilbey and Lauren Goodger could all be heading into the house.

The team behind ‘Benefits Street’ recently announced that they’re making a new show for 2015, focusing on the lives of immigrants to the UK.

It’s been a dramatic week for the cast of ‘TOWIE’, namely for Billie Faiers who welcomed her first child on Thursday, and the action isn’t about to stop.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Billie’s new arrival might make the Essex gang come over all gooey-eyed and leave their arguing for the time being, but obviously, that doesn’t happen.

Instead, there are more tears from Chloe Sims and Ferne as the battle over Charlie continues, and Jess is still moping around at the fact she has to move out without her boyfriend Ricky.

However, Ricky has a surprise up his sleeve that will surely put Jess’s mind at ease.

Gemma Collins is still stuck in the middle between Bobby and Harry, while Arg and Lydia’s blossoming friendship is going from strength to strength.

We can’t help but feel there might be some tears for them before the series is over. Honestly, when will the ‘TOWIE’ cast learn?

29 Pictures Of People Being Rained On At T In The Park

Tens of thousands of music fans are enjoying the second day of T in the Park, with big name acts including Calvin Harris and Paolo Nutini still to perform. Revellers swapped their sunglasses for waterproofs and wellies as rain fell over Balado in Kinross-shire during the afternoon. Organisers described the opening day atmosphere of the weekend-long event as "tremendous" as the crowds said farewell to the site after 18 years of hosting the festival. Kiesza, the Stranglers, Katy B and Scottish band Twin Atlantic performed on the main stage, with Calvin Harris set to bring the party to a close later tonight.

Michelle Young, 30, from Paisley, said the Scottish DJ was a big attraction this year. She said: "We were here last year to see him and he was absolutely brilliant, he got everyone totally up for it and the place was rocking. It will be exactly the same tonight. This year has just been as awesome as ever. We come every year and love it - we wouldn't come back if we didn't think it was worth it." Carrie Binks, 26, from Renfrew, was enjoying her first year at T in the Park. "It's absolutely great, we're loving it. It's been amazing so far and that's without Paolo Nutini, who we are still waiting to see. It's as cool as I thought it would be - it's been amazing." Biffy Clyro headlined the first day, with performances from Ed Sheeran and Ellie Goulding also seeing the crowds party in glorious sunshine.

Cameron Hilton, 21, from Edinburgh, said the rain did not make any difference to the mood among the revellers. "Why would a bit of rain matter? Everyone's happy at T. It's a brilliant weekend, with two of my favourites - Calvin Harris and Arctic Monkeys." Elbow, Bombay Bicycle Club, John Newman, the Human League and the 1975 also performed today for the crowd of up to 85,000. Police said crime levels remained low, with 22 people arrested since the camp site opened on Thursday, mostly for petty crime and minor drugs offences.

Chief Superintendent Kevin Lynch said: "We urge fans to continue to take care, particularly around drink and drugs. Our message is to remember that pills of many different colours and designs can be toxic and kill. Don't risk it. Fans should also avoid bringing valuables on site and ensure that their belongings are secure at all times. We're keen to see everyone stay safe and have a fantastic time."

The stage will be packed up at Balado tomorrow for the final time after Arctic Monkeys perform as the festival moves to the Strathallan Castle estate in Perthshire next year. Other performers over the weekend include the headliners of T in the Park's first year in Kinross-shire - the Charlatans and Paul Weller. Festival director Geoff Ellis said: "It's been wonderful, the whole event's gone really really well. Glorious sunshine on Thursday and Friday for campers getting set up on dry ground, today light drizzle but nothing we can't cope with. Yesterday Biffy Clyro really rocked it. It's always been their dream to play or headline T in the Park, and now they've played 10 times. That's a record, nobody else has ever done that, and they really blew everybody away last night, a fantastic show.

"Today Paolo Nutini, Calvin Harris, Elbow, Rudimental, Pharrell Williams - a fantastic line-up and topping off tomorrow with Paul Weller, Jake Bugg, Bastille, and finishing up with the Arctic Monkeys." He added: "We're waving bye-bye to Balado, and it'll be sad to leave because it's served us well for 18 years. It's been a good, practical site. Where we're going to at Strathallan Castle, it's a beautiful country estate, so a very different site to here, but still with some big open fields for the main arenas, and it will maybe have more of a boutique feel because you're not seeing the whole site from any one place, so it'll be like a voyage of discovery through the tree-lined avenues. It'll be a different feel, but the same size, and it'll still be T in the Park, with the same unique passion and atmosphere, and that atmosphere last night was tremendous walking through the crowd, and everyone's just so happy, all friendly. It's a real privilege to be part of such a great festival."

I read in the paper yesterday that authors often earn less than the current minimum wage in the UK. I can vouch for that. I've been writing (relatively successfully) for the last 15 years, and am just starting to break even.

The idea, originally, was that it would underwrite my main career: acting - which isn't exactly renowned for bringing fame and fortune to all and sundry. Both careers, wedding-cake-like, have crowded tiers, where you're either parachuted to the top as an overnight success, or spend years climbing head over hand up and up. But either way, your time at the top is usually limited, before you tumble back down.

The article was topped with a picture of JK Rowling, famed for her sudden apparent success - much to her annoyance, having worked hard as a single mother before going interstellar.

'Overnight success' is a misnomer. Being thrust into the public eye is more often than not preceded by years of graft. The Orlando Blooms of the world, plucked from drama school and catapulted into stardom can be more susceptible to a firework career, not having the experience, the deep-rooted skill, or - in this day and age - the mental strength to put up with the magnifying glare of the media.

Anthony Hopkins and Patrick Stewart (Sirs, both) were relative unknowns outside of Stratford-upon-Avon until they were into their 40s. Years at the Royal Shakespeare Company are ignored, but their 'overnight' success has continued through these last four decades thanks to years of treading the boards, speaking the Bard's works.

Shakespeare too, seemed to burst onto the theatrical scene in the early 1590s with a string of provocative hits, Titus Andronicus, Richard III, Romeo and Juliet.

There are a few records of Shakespeare the Actor, and a few of Shakespeare the Youngling, but nothing in between. Theories abound with what he did in those so-called Lost Years, from the more left-field (going to war in Holland), to living in Lancashire for a while, before drifting down to London, and into the theatre profession. The next we hear, is that of the young upstart crow Shake-scene, and ba-BOOM, the future Man of the Millennium was bestowed on us mere mortals.

It's understood that he started as an actor, learning his craft as an unknown. What he did next was extremely canny, and something somewhat outside the realms of possibility for writers, producers, or actors in this modern world. Doing something original these days is hard. Having it noticed or attended, even harder. Indeed, so full to the brim are the tiers, the hangers on are hanging on to the hangers on for even the slightest finger-nail of purchase.

But this is what it seems he did: he became an actor; he learnt from those above him. He studied the Elizabethan theatre system; saw the metaphorical gaps on the shelf. He understood the market; and then he cornered it.

Actors came and went between different companies: Shakespeare worked with the same actors (for the most part) for much of his career.

Play-wrights would write their plays, and sell them to the acting Company that would perform them. The copyright would then pass to the acting Company - so if they decided to perform it again, or publish it, any and all profits would pass to the Company.

Patronage (being kept under the wing of a noble) was the key to longevity in such a small market, and very quickly Shakespeare's Company become patronised, first by Queen Elizabeth, then by King James. Not a small change deal.

Soon after that, Shakespeare became a share-holder and then co-owner of their theatre. This canny movement that when he sold a play to the Company, a cut of any profits they'd make came back to him.

Meanwhile, he was reinventing the way plays were written, while stealing theatrical fire from the Gods, and changing forever what theatre had the potential to be, and raised the bar of his audiences' expectations of a sunny afternoon out in London.

I've been forming an ensemble over the last few years, based on what we understand Shakespeare's Company's working processes might have been. Next week we perform at the new Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, some of the first actors to speak Shakespeare there, and the very first to speak his works in Original Pronunciation, the accent they spoke four centuries ago. My colleague-in-arms, one of my oldest friends, calls this explorative process the Shakespeare Original Practice Ensemble.

I don't expect to make bags of money from my professions. I don't expect Charles to become patron one day. I'm certainly not the businessman Shakespeare was. But when you're standing on stage, or writing, and (hopefully) entertaining someone - who cares?

A source told The Mirror: “Gregg is determined to clean up his act. There’s been a lot of bad press over the past couple of years – from the hotel brawl to his string of young women – but Gregg wants to reinvent himself for ‘Strictly’, which is a family show.

“He see this as a perfect opportunity to change the public’s perception of him.”

According to the paper, Gregg is even having some of his tattoos removed ahead of squeezing into some sparkly costumes.

Last August, Gregg was involved in an altercation with a fellow diner at a Worcestershire hotel.

Gregg launched a physical attack on another man, later stating that the individual had grabbed his girlfriend’s bottom.

Gregg joins a long list of potential ‘Strictly’ dancers, which includes Mark Wright and Caroline Flack.

Earlier this week, James Jordan - a pro-dancer who has been dropped - hit out at bosses and said he will be watching ‘X Factor’ instead this year.

Ian Thorpe has revealed he is gay in an emotional interview with Michael Parkinson for Australian television.

The former Olympic champion broke his silence on his sexuality, after his host asked him, "You've always said that you're not gay... is all of that true?"

Ian Thorpe waited for a moment to find the right words, before saying, "I've thought about this for a long time... I'm not straight. And this is only something that very recently, we're talking in the past two weeks, I've been comfortable telling the closest people around me exactly that."

He also told Michael that he has wanted to come out for a long time, but "didn't feel like I could".

"What happened was I felt the lie had become so big that I didn't want people to question my integrity," he explained.

"And, you know, a little bit of ego comes into this. I didn't want people to question that... have I lied about everything?"

"I'm comfortable saying I'm a gay man. And I don't want young people to feel the same way that I did. You can grow up, you can be comfortable and you can be gay.

"I was concerned about the reaction from my family, my friends. I'm pleased to say that in telling them, and especially my parents, they told me that they love me and they support me.

"And for young people out there, know that that's usually what the answer is."

Thorpie has already received a wave of support from fans and fellow swimmers for his coming out, with many sending him their good wishes on Twitter. The goodwill towards him has been so extensive that #onyathorpie was trending on Twitter, before the interview was even broadcast.

It comes only two years after he denied he was gay in his autobiography, saying that all his sexual experiences had been straight, and that he was hurt by the rumours which seemed to attack his integrity.

He wrote then, "I know what it’s like to grow up and be told what your sexuality is, then realising that it’s not the full reality. I was accused of being gay before I knew who I was."

Now he's out, and fellow Australian Olympian Matthew Mitcham has told Australian's Sunday Telegraph, “I really hope this process gives him some peace and that the media and the public give him the same respect and the same overwhelming support I received in 2008. The Australian public and media have a really wonderful opportunity to set an example for kids who are in Ian’s position.”

Luisa Zissman may have defended the x-rated ‘Magaluf girl’ video which was published online earlier this month, but her sentiments aren’t shared by former ‘X Factor’ judge Nicole Scherzinger.

Unlike Luisa, Nicole is outraged by the clip and thinks parents need to make sure they teach their kids strong moral values.

Speaking to the Daily Star, Nicole said: “Child, you better get on your knees and pray - after you disinfect your mouth.

"You better find God and ask for forgiveness. I'll give her a drink, a smack in the head. You're talking to a girl who grew up up in a Catholic family, my grandfather is a priest, my mum taught me strong morals.

“The parents have to teach these kids these moral values, it's sad. She's degrading herself to nothing.”

However, the girl, who was filmed performing a sex act on 24 men, may be in luck, as Nicole thinks she knows the perfect solution.

"I don't think it's fun, I don't think it's party. It's not going to be cute when you've got a [sexually transmitted] disease and you're not going to last for long,” she continued. "This is real life stuff. She must not love herself enough, it's got to come from within."

“I need to make her hang out with Jahmene [Douglas], he's a living angel. He'll be like, 'I'm going to convert you into a nun.'"

Nicole’s comments come just days after former ‘CBB’ housemate Luisa Zissman defended the girl, stating: “We’ve all been young and irresponsible, unfortunately for her it’s deemed newsworthy and so she has the nation's judgemental eye glaring over her like a spotlight.”

Luisa’s comments have already been slammed by Jasmine Lennard, who branded the businesswoman “stupid”.

‘Geordie Shore’ star Jay Gardner has branded the clip “the most shocking thing I’ve ever seen” after eagle-eyed Twitter users spotted him in the film. Jay is not involved with any of the sex acts.

Josie Cunningham - the pregnant "glamour model" infamous for her NHS-funded boob job - is demanding £150,000 to appear on Celebrity Big Brother.

The 23-year-old took to Twitter to voice her disdain for appearing on the show for £100,00, the amount reportedly offered White Dee, the star of 'Benefit Street'.

Cunningham had previously caused national outrage when she said she was willing to undergo an abortion in order to star in reality TV.

However, she later changed her mind when she was offered alternative money-making deals including her own dealing website and reportedly two book deals.

Cunningham became the subject of an online petition imploring her to not undergo the abortion.

It stated: “Josie Cunningham is having an abortion just to appear in the Channel 5 hit show Big Brother. Despite having 2 other children Josie is having an abortion so she can continue on her path of been famous and her career is more important than the life of her unborn baby.

"She has caused outrage by getting a boob op on the NHS and has had surgery to straighten a tooth also on the NHS because she is pregnant. She only got the tooth straightened to help her career and this needs to be stopped. I am not against abortions for the right reasons but to try become famous is not one of them so please join in unity with me to put this petition to channel 5."

Cunningham has also previously admitted to taking up smoking and drinking upon learning she was expecting her third son despite desperately wanting a little girl.

She exclusively told The Mirror: “The evening I found out the sex of the baby was when I lit up my first cigarette. I’m not proud of it – but I couldn’t stop myself. It changed everything.

“I knew it could harm my child but it didn’t stop me. Deep down I know I wouldn’t be smoking or drinking if I knew I was having a girl.”
