'Wimbledon 2Day' Review: Subdued Clare Balding And Guests Return To Familiar Format Following Viewers' Complaints

It was a strangely subdued Clare Balding who returned to BBC2 last night with a clearly revamped version of 'Wimbledon 2Day'.

Following the clamour of criticism from viewers and TV writers alike, Clare and her set had been moved from the gaudy Gatsby Club to the more familiar surroundings of a TV studio, and with no live audience anywhere to be seen.

Whereas guest John McEnroe had laughed off the doubters live on air last week - "They've got it in for us, Clare" he joked - the presenter herself seemed unable to join in the joke.

Clare Balding and her set were moved to the more familiar pastures for the revised Wimbledon highlights programme

Opening the programme, she didn't even look straight at the camera for the first five minutes of the show, preferring to concentrate on her guests, a returning McEnroe and fellow pundit Tracey Austin.

And she made no reference to the revamp or the storm of protest that had prompted it, only saying instead...

"We're at the business end of the tournament, and because of that we've moved even closer to the centre of the action - on the edge of Centre Court."

It was a full five minutes before Clare Balding looked directly at the camera on last night's highlights show

There was barely any chat throughout the rest of the programme, which concentrated on the tennis matches of Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. Nor did Clare include the segment #anyonefortennis, which had invited viewers to send in footage of themselves having a knock.

Judging by last night's show, the message was clear by the BBC, and it was... message received.

It would have been nice to see Clare Balding tip a wink to the debacle surrounding the programme, though. Her presenter status has taken a bit of a battering to be sure but, as Andy Murray would no doubt be the first to remind her, we're only half-way through the tournament and there's still a lot to play for...

'Wimbledon 2Day' continues tonight at 8.30pm on BBC2.

Shayne, who will play Kym Marsh’s on-screen cousin Aidan, has opened up about his part, revealing that his first scenes will air this summer.

He told the Manchester Evening News: "I am looking forward to August when my first scene is aired.

"I'm going to focus on this role and bring Aidan to life."

The singer-turned-soap star added that he had no idea how huge his job would be, stating: "I didn't realise how large this role was, storyline-wise. There is a lot going on without a doubt.

"I am going to work hard, especially with the role I have been given and the storylines, which are much bigger than I expected."

Shayne’s not the only popstar heading for t’cobbles, and Sarah Harding has also filmed a guest appearance on the soap.

Her character is set to arrive on the arm of Tracy Barlow’s ex-husband Robert Preston, but by the looks of things, their relationship isn’t going too well…

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen's Admits His Wife Gets ‘P***ed Off' Over Gay Suggestions

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen has admitted he doesn’t care if people think he’s gay - but the same can’t be said for his wife.

The flamboyant interior designer, who shot to fame on the BBC show ‘Changing Rooms’ in the 90s, has revealed questions about his sexuality rub his wife Jackie up the wrong way.

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and his wife Jackie

He told Radio Times: “There was Jonathan Ross and me – we went to the same tailor – and very quickly there was David Beckham and then there was a massive wave of boys who weren’t gay but who looked after themselves.

“But none of us ever stood up and said, ‘I’m not gay’ – we just got on with what we were doing because it doesn’t matter.

"Although it did p**s off Jackie when people mistook me as gay. And I’m certainly not secretly gay – I don’t like the idea of being secretly anything…”

Laurence, who has been married to Jackie for almost 30 years after meeting when they were both just 19-years-old, went on to reveal it was love at first sight for both of them.

“It was a complete, Olympic instant attraction,” he says. “She was just absolutely exquisite and naughty and posh and had the most amazing skin.

“I was actually quite pleased to find that she had assumed I was gay because it meant that my very, very vigorous stealth pounce was entirely unexpected and unguarded.

"We have completely and utterly grown up together. Jackie has always been very open about her postnatal depression and about the ridiculousness of the circus of our life at times, and the fact that I’ve often not been around.

“But everyone has their own normal and that is our normal. We enjoy each other so much.”

Partial Recall - Terminator Genisys The Review

$
0
0
Thirty years ago, a nervous 16 year old bought a ticket for the 18 certificate The Terminator. In an age before he was able to worship the God of VHS, this was a major event.
Writer/director James Cameron at the time was a relative unknown, Arnold Schwarzenegger's movie stardom was yet to burn supernova bright and Stan Winston's iconic robot was a refreshingly terrifying presence.

It was stunning stuff. Low budget yes, but a simple story (inspired by an old Harlan Ellison Outer Limits episode) brilliantly told.

Eventually that 18 was dropped to a 15, and we all know what happened with the sequels.

The 1991 mega bucks T2 was a great spin on the first movie, but then the third film proved that robot enemies smacking each other through walls for a while can grow tired very fast.

But compared to Terminator Salvation, that looked like a masterpiece. Christian Bale shouting into a microphone and a bunch of so so characters plodding through assorted action scenes led to six years of waiting.

While Arnie was governing California, it looked like fans would never see another chapter in the franchise. However, Terminator the movie series is built to last, and in the hands of Game of Thrones director Alan Taylor, the fifth movie in the series, Terminator Genisys, falls into similar traps as the other films.

Following a clever first 20 minutes in which fans of the original see the heroic Kyle Reese sent back through time to save resistance leader Sarah Connor, again, scenes from the original movie are recreated. Some effectively, others less so.

Having ruined Die Hard 5 and Insurgent, Jai Courtney is at it again, sparking with Emilia Clarke's Sarah and forging an awkward bromance with Jason Clark's John.

While the toothy British actress is fine as (deep breath) the eventual mother of the human race's last hope against killer corporation Skynet, Jason is just plain creepy and annoying as the scarred series regular.

And Arnie? Well, the age thing is handled well, with "Old, not obsolete" being the new "I'll be back."

The fact his skin ages means the T-800 looks like he's been round the block a few times.

Which is fine and dandy. We feel for the highest paid actor's alter ego, but there are so many explosions and droid on droid action, not always in a good way, that after 30 minutes, it stops being an event and just turns into a tiresome series of incendiary set pieces.

I didn't care about the budding romance between Kyle and Sarah, hated John with a passion, and yearned for more JK Simmons, who was in full-on comedy mode rather than searing, acting all over the screen Whiplash mode.

Arnie has five words of dialogue in the third act that sent a genuine frisson of emotion through me. It was the first time I'd been moved by the saga since the T-800's thumbs up finale in T2

Matt Smith has a key role, though I'll not reveal it here. I will say there was an I Robot/Resident Evil sense of déjà vu about the personified OS integral to the plot. While Genisys is no classic, it ticks over like one of those clockwork droids from Tennant era Doctor Who

But many of his episodes usually told a better story in half the time on a fraction of the budget.

The fact Arnie spouts a load of dull technobabble explaining the convoluted timelines is one of the problems.

In the original, Michael Biehn did a brilliant job of delivering key exposition as his character was the only one who really knew what was going on. It was thrilling, fresh and understandable. Here it's just leaden and barely coherent.

With very little tension in this updated version of the story, this seasoned fan wonders if the saga should have been left well alone.

Bill Cosby Admitted To Obtaining Sedatives To Give To Women For Sex During 2005 Sexual Abuse Court Case

Bill Cosby admitted years ago to obtaining sedatives to deliberately administer to women, it has been revealed.

Court documents from 2005, obtained by the Associated Press, show the veteran comedian confessing to getting Quaaludes, with the specific intention of giving them to young women he wanted to have sex with.

He also confessed, under oath, to giving the sedative to at least one woman, among “other people”, the documents state.

In 2005, the TV actor and comedian had been testifying in a sexual assault lawsuit filed against him by a former employee of Temple University. During his testimony, he confessed to giving her three half-pills of Benadryl.

The case was eventually settled out of court, for an undisclosed amount of money.

In recent months, Bill has been accused by over a dozen separate women - including supermodel Janice Dickinson - of sexual harassment, stretching over a 40-year period.

Despite the accusations leveled against him, Bill has never been charged, and the statute of limitations on a number of the alleged incidents has now run out, as they took place years ago.

Back in January, Bill returned to stand-up, receiving a standing ovation from his audiences, despite a slew of anti-rape protesters gathering outside the show.

Later in his run, Bill even reportedly made a reference to the sexual abuse accusations in his performance, joking that women in the audience “should be careful” when drinking around him.

"Why Does It Take So long for Your Book to Come Out if You've Already Written It?"

$
0
0
Coming from an online publishing background ("Never wrong for long..." "The client wants their advertorial up yesterday..." "Copy and paste! Copy and paste!" and so on) sometimes the pace of book publishing really stops me in my tracks.

I mean, literally, there are pauses in the process where I feel ridiculously idle because there's nothing for me to do. And you know what? I like it. I like the attention to detail, the many, many layers of editorial scrutiny, the luxury of a whole team of people working on making my book that absolute best that it can be. Getting it right first time, rather than just getting it online first.

I've been really lucky this last year. People have been overwhelmingly lovely about my book news, and have all promised to buy Try Not to Breathe when it's released. Obviously, I have taken these polite assurances as 100% gospel truth and am going to demand proof of purchase from everyone I know come January.

But there is one question that I keep getting asked and, if I'm honest, it can get a little bit grating, so I thought I'd explain...

Question: "Why does it take so long for your book to come out if you've already written it?"

TLDR answer: Because it's not just a case of pressing print.

I've been asked a variation of this question more times than I can count. I'd like to think it's not being said in a sceptical, "so you're claiming you have a book deal, where's the proof?" kind of way but, y'know, it's asked a lot.

So here's the answer.

Many steps along the road to publication are one-shot things. Getting an agent, for example, takes a long time. It takes three polished first chapters, a really succinct but also, somehow, comprehensive synopsis and an attention-grabbing covering letter that also doesn't make you sound nuts. And then if you're lucky enough to get a request for the full manuscript, you want to make sure that's as good as it possibly can be. Because no agent in the world has the time or inclination to say "underneath the typos and missing scenes and plot holes and two dimensional characters, this manuscript is gold, so just keep trying and sending numerous redrafts to me". I'm not being bitchy, by the way. Every first draft has all those things, including mine, that's why it's so important to edit and edit and edit.

So fast forward, you have an agent and they've given you great advice and guidance on how to further polish your work, you've done that, they've submitted it to editors at publishing houses and one of them has bought it. Brilliant. I mean, pinch me, this is already an amazing thing. They've invested in you and your work, and they - like you - want that investment to pay off. From this point, it's likely to be a year - at least - before that book ever sees the strip lighting of a bookshop or the click of a mouse.

My debut novel was sold to my UK publisher in October 2014, it will be first published in January 2016. And that's not abnormal, far from it.

So, what happens in this year plus change?

Firstly, it might be sold to other publishers for different regions (sound the horns, this is awesome) which then means this process somewhat duplicates for each of those regions and languages (so add in translation time for some books).

Your book, your pride and joy, your baby, still needs work. Your editor will have changes he or she wants you to make, themes to be make clearer, characters to be developed, or sometimes removed or blended with other characters. Perhaps there are some flabby bits to be cut, or sub plots to be tightened up. And sometimes the pace needs some work. As an author, you're likely to receive a fairly lengthy note detailing these requested changes, with a deadline in which to turn them around.

Once you've made the changes, there may still be a few elements that your editor thinks could be better. And they'll be right, so you make those changes and then maybe you might repeat this all over again. And it's worth it.

Meanwhile, at the publishing house, there will be meetings to decide when best to publish your book, taking into account what else is being published and when. As a debut novelist, do you want to be published at the same time lots of really established star writers? No, of course not. So there are some slots of the year that are better for debuts.

Your manuscript will now need a really close line-by-line edit. And you'll make changes accordingly. So all typos and whoopsies will be picked up then, yeah? WRONG. You're talking around 100,000 words, it'll still take a copy editor or two to go through and scoop up any mistakes. They'll also send back questions like (real example) "Would this character really have had a Walkman in that year?".

Around the nine-month pre-publication mark, the publication date and list price will have been decided, and the marketing, publicity and sales teams will have been briefed on your book and will be drawing up plans.

It doesn't have a cover yet, so they'll be working on that too. (Like how I made that sound like it ain't no thing when it's actually an INSANELY big thing?)

So when the words are all perfect and the cover has been designed and it's been listed with booksellers and the details have been added to your publisher's catalogue and on their website (like this), then you'll get to see the words as they'll appear in print. In my case, I've just gone through the pages from my US publisher and made my last few little changes. It's pretty breath-taking to see how the pages will really look, the typefaces that have been chosen and the pretty little details that you take for granted as a reader.

In the case of my UK release, I'm waiting (hopping from foot to foot with excitement) to see and TOUCH my first bound proofs. This is the version of your book, with cover, that is sent to early readers like other authors. This is also incredibly nervewracking and first day at big schoolish so I won't dwell.

There will then be several months of publicity activity to help potential readers know that the book is coming and why they'll like it. There will be copies sent to journalists and book bloggers, and eventually the finished book itself will be printed and boxes will be sent to bookshops and online retailers. If you're lucky, you might get to have a launch party.

So, I'm not there yet, I'm still over six months out but things are already ramping up. Oh, and obviously there's the little detail of writing the second manuscript.

It's worth it. It's all worth it. It's dream come true stuff. It's try harder and care more than ever before stuff. But it is not quick stuff. And that, in the opposite of a nutshell, is why it takes so long to be come out even though it's already been written.

Steve Brookstein, Former 'X Factor Winner', Sparks Outrage With Insensitive 7/7 Tweet

Former ‘X Factor’ winner Steve Brookstein has sparked outrage, after drawing a link between the atrocities of the 7/7 bombings and his number-one album.

SEE ALSO:

On Tuesday, the tenth anniversary of the bombings, the talent show winner tweeted that when the bombs went off in London, killing 52 people and injuring nearly 800, he was celebrating the success of his debut release.

He posted on Twitter: "10 years ago I was heading home from New York and Barcelona after celebrating a No1 album. Totally oblivious to 7/7 attacks."

Needles to say users of the social networking site had something to say about Steve’s insensitively-timed tweet:

One user was also quick to point out that Steve’s debut album, ‘Heart And Soul’, was not number one at the time of the attacks, having actually hit the top spot on 15 May 2005, where it stayed for just one week:

However, Steve made an effort to defend himself, by tweeting a screengrab of tweets he had sent in 2011 about the attacks, where he hailed those who helped the injured and dying as “heroes”.

He then attempted to claim that he knew his tweet would cause outrage, as he responded to a shocked follower:

Steve has faded into obscurity since being dropped by Simon Cowell’s record label, Syco, eight months after winning the first series of ‘The X Factor’ in December 2004.

‘X Factor' Auditions To Begin In Manchester, After Delay Following Simon Cowell's Mother Julie's Death

‘X Factor’ bosses have confirmed that this year’s auditions will begin on Wednesday 8 July, after being delayed following the death of Simon Cowell’s mother Julie.

On Monday, Simon’s family confirmed that Julie had died at the age of 89 and Syco bosses confirmed that the planned Manchester auditions would not be taking place.

Now, bosses have revealed that the new panel will unite for the first time tomorrow, in a statement which reads: “We will now start auditions in Manchester on Wednesday and Thursday this week."

Simon will attend the auditions, the statement adds, along with his fellow judges Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, and newbies Rita Ora and Nick Grimshaw.

It’s not just the judging panel which has been given a shake-up this year, as the room auditions have been axed, along with the entire presenting team.

Olly Murs and Caroline Flack will now front the main show, while Rochelle Humes and Kiss Fm DJ Melvin Odoom will present ‘Xtra Factor’.

Not everyone has been impressed by the changes though, and Si’s close pal Sinitta is one of the many people to speak out against the new panel.

“I do think the panel lacks experience,” she said earlier this month. “I do think that Simon and Nick Grimshaw will have a laugh and have fun but I don't think [Nick] is a mentor... but he does know his music.”

Live Fast, Die Young and Leave a Beautiful Documentary

$
0
0
To anyone who bought Cheek to Cheek, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga's 2014 award winning collection of jazz standards, the recent cinematic release of Amy will come as a timely and rather sad reminder of what could have been.

There's no doubt that the multi-million selling artist and North American Meat Institute's poster girl was a substitute. Admittedly a good one - even up there with those substitutions made by Alex Ferguson during the 1999 Champions League Final against Bayern Munich - but a substitute nonetheless for the troubled London born singer who died practically four years ago under tragically inevitable circumstances.

I'm not alone in recalling precisely where I was and what I was doing when those in the public eye pass away. On the day Winehouse joined the so called '27 Club' (a fate nowhere near as bad as joining S Club 7), I was paying for groceries in my local Waitrose.

An assistant, obviously distressed, came up to the young chap who was serving me and told him that the controversial singer had been found dead. What surprised me most and has stuck in my mind ever since wasn't the news (my reaction being nothing more than a resigned 'it was only a matter of time' shrug of the shoulders), it was his response. "Who's she? Never heard of her". Given his age and her media attention, it seemed an odd reaction.

I can't help wondering if he'll go to see this film? He definitely should do. For fans or otherwise of Winehouse's music, it's every bit as good as Asif Kapadia's last documentary about the racing driver, Ayrton Senna.

This time around, the increasingly renowned filmmaker has progressed from speed to alcohol, heroin, crack cocaine and something more addictive than all of them put together: fame.

Using previously unseen footage and unheard interviews with those who knew her best, it's a fascinating insight into a performer who craved the limelight, yet eventually came to regret it. Although this is an oft-told story, in fact as old as the concept of celebrity itself, here it's delivered with a fresh and bold originality.

One of the most genuinely touching and real moments features Winehouse near the end of her life. Seemingly free from drugs, despite being twitchingly anxious, she records Body and Soul for Bennett's Duets II record. He later claimed it was his absolute favourite track. Desperate to impress her idol, she gets increasingly frustrated as take after take she isn't satisfied with her rendition and tells him that she doesn't want to waste his time.

The octogenarian crooner reassures her that she's wonderful. No exaggeration because it won the following year's Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

What comes across in this scene is that ultimately she was a jazz chanteuse - a sort of hipper, more urban Diana Krall (God! how she'd turn in her grave at that comment) - happiest when interpreting and putting her own unique vocal stamp on the songs of those she admired most, including Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington.

While Bennett famously left his heart in San Francisco, Winehouse certainly left hers slightly closer to home in the Abbey Road studio where this, her last ever recording took place.

Although widely lauded for her self-penned songs such as Rehab, Back to Black and You Know I'm No Good ( the lyrics intermittently flashing up on screen, giving them an importance which away from the kind light of sentimentality they possibly don't deserve), the singer appeared to feel trapped by them. The infamous concert in Belgrade where in a drunken and bewildered state, she could hardly be bothered to bring herself to sing them again certainly suggested this to be the case.

Perhaps they were too personal, overly self indulgent and better suited to the diary entries and private letters of a temporarily troubled young woman infatuated with unsuitable lovers. More likely though she could see herself 30 years hence continuing to belt them out, a grotesque cabaret caricature of her former self; the signature beehive hairdo greying, no longer piled quite so exaggeratedly high and the Cleopatra make up a little less carefully applied. Who knows what else the future could have had in store. The new judge; the gobby opinionated one on the Voice? Thanks to those around her, don't bet that it wouldn't have happened.

Although Tony Bennett isn't on screen for that long, it's his presence that is constantly felt. You are left with the overriding sense that she longs for him and not Mitch (if there's one person who doesn't come out of this at all well, it's Mitchell Winehouse) to have been her father. Perhaps then she would have truly had someone she respected, loved and looked up to for advice and guidance.

For the average stage school starstruck teenager, Amy should be mandatory viewing. If nothing else, it would serve as a stark reminder of the perils of mass popularity. Like a packet of cigarettes, this movie needs to come with a health warning attached. The message of impending doom would naturally read: 'Be careful what you wish for. You might just get it'. One wonders though if any of the thousands of wannabes out there would take the slightest bit of notice? Seems doubtful. Even knowing how it plays out, they'd probably still willingly give up a lengthy proportion of their earthly lives to have half of what Miss Winehouse had.

Not, of course, that stardom always has to end badly or tragically.

For every Amy, there's a Cheryl (Fernandez-Versini). Someone for whom the murky waters of celebrity and the sharks that swim in them aren't nearly as scary. Yes, their careers go on for longer. They simply never shine quite as brightly.

Therefore, along with others before her, maybe Amy checked out at exactly the right time. With all due respect to the aforementioned Gaga, it's just a pity we never got to hear that collaborative album as it really should have sounded.

Big Brother’ housemate Chloe Wilburn was surprised to have been stabbed in the back by her fellow contestant Nick Henderson, in Monday night’s show.

SEE MORE:

Nick was one of four housemates who had been put up for eviction as part of Big Brother’s Cash Bomb twist, where the group were required quickly to decide who should be nominated, or have the eventual winner’s cash prize continuously slashed.

However, the twists weren’t over yet, and Nick was thrown a lifeline by Big Brother, when the nominated housemates were told they could spend some of the winner’s prize fund to save themselves from eviction… though it would mean Chloe went up in their place.

All four nominated contestants were told they could bid an amount of money to save themselves and put Chloe up for the chop instead.

Harry Amelia, Jack McDermott and Sam Kay - the other three nominated contestants - all bid nothing, with Harry claiming: “I got nominated for genuine reasons and I’m not going to take that away from anyone.”

Jack, who turned down the chance to completely erase the winner’s fee in the first week of the show, added: “I value my friendships more than money.”

The group was then visibly shocked when Nick bid £5,000, insisting that being in the ‘Big Brother’ final was something he’d “wanted his whole life”.

A disappointed Chloe remarked: “Turns out you can put a price on friendship.”

She later told Nick that she wasn’t angry with him, but couldn’t have done what he did to one of her housemates, although Harry was less than forgiving, telling him: “Winners don’t buy their way into a final.”

‘Big Brother’ continues on Tuesday night, at 10pm on Channel 5.

Paul Rudd had ‘Good Morning Britain’ hosts Ben Shephard and Susanna Reid giggling like school-children on today’s (7 July) show, after an accidental innuendo struck the programme once again.

SEE ALSO:

The Hollywood star was appearing on the ITV breakfast show to discuss his role in new film ‘Ant-Man’, when Ben introduced him to a Lego version of his superhero character.

When Paul admitted he wasn’t aware he had been immortalised in Lego form, Ben handed him the small figure, saying: “There you go, have a play with yourself.”

The innocent comment drew a raised eyebrow from Paul, who joked: “I beg your pardon? This is morning television.”

Ben soon realised his double entendre and immediately started laughing, covering his face in embarrassment.

“I... I didn't... It's Lego!” he stuttered, trying to explain himself.

“No it's fine. I'll just sit here in the corner playing with myself,” Paul insisted.

Ben then joked that it is usually Susanna who lets innuendo slip on the show.

“That was a Susanna Reid-ism!” he said.

“But this time it was nothing to do with me!” she joked.

Susanna once famously asked Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens if he had to “beat off” other actors to land his role ‘The Guest’, causing him to break down laughing.

It also isn’t the first time Paul has caused hilarity in an interview while promoting ‘Ant-Man’, ‘farting’ his way through one recent junket.

As Kim Richards' personal problems begin to mount, the housewives offer some words of advice to help her repair her relationship with Kyle.

Meanwhile, back at Eileen's organized table read, Kim bares her heart to the other women. She admits how torn she feels right now, like she has to choose between her sister and her best friend. It's so heartbreaking to watch Kim break down. Obviously, something has to give here. But when some of the women try to voice their concern to Kim about her sobriety, Kim quickly deflects. It seems a little silly that one minute, Kim is in tears, telling the Housewives about her situation, but then the next she's wondering why everyone is so concerned with her business! It's hard to keep secrets on a reality show to begin with, but if you decide to tell people about your problems, you're inviting trouble.

In other news, Brandi's taking on a 21-day cleanse to prove to what she calls the "judgemental a**holes" that she's capable of anything when she puts her mind to it.

But will that change when she attends Lisa Vanderpump's surprise party? (It looks like the whole cast is coming out for the party, including one of my favs, Kathy Hilton!) We'll see how well behaved Brandi is once the celebration gets underway . . .

Lisa Vanderpump's "supportive, kind and sweet" friends (and Brandi) come together to throw her a surprise birthday party. However Ken barely gets Lisa to her own party! She almost refuses to stop by the restaurant where everyone is waiting, thinking she is late for a different event. We see her debating with their Rolls Royce driver about where to go. #RichPeopleProblems

Brandi is obviously not on her "best behavior" from the beginning of the party, but it's hard to blame her since Lisa V. pushes her buttons throughout the entire evening - from the joke toast she makes at Brandi's expense to the "challenge" to sing for her friendship. Obviously, she wants to make a fool out of Brandi. Poor Brandi isn't just the entertainment in this episode, she is the party clown! Brandi remains a pretty good sport about it, though, and it's obvious that Lisa V. really wants to be the one to sing; the party turns musical after her challenge to Brandi.

Overall, the surprise party went a lot more smoothly than I had anticipated. But maybe that's only because the pressure is already building for next week's Amsterdam trip!

Episode 15 - Spoiler Alert!

It's the moment we've been waiting for! The trip to Amsterdam or should I say Amsterslap!!

I have a feeling these wild women will really let loose in Amsterdam - especially Kim! But maybe not in a fun way. It seems like it's only a matter of time before all the Housewives come together to give Kim an intervention, and maybe confront her about all the skeletons in her closet. It is the topic of this season, after all!

But Kim and Brandi are definitely not going to stand for this! I think we all know when Lisa R. starts off the trip by confronting them on the jet that this is only the beginning. Lisa R. may be a new addition to this cast, but she has quickly adapted to all the drama! Her place on the show seems secure... until next season, at least.

I have a feeling this new drama will be drawn out over the next few episodes, since the finale is approaching. Fasten your seatbelts, ladies and gentlemen! We are off to Amsterdam!

READ MORE:

Not only is she on a sunshine break to Barbados, but how amazing does she look in her designer bikini (it's by Brazilian swimwear label Vix, in case you were wondering)?

The mum-of-two was spotted soaking up the sun on the Caribbean island where she’s holidaying with her footballer husband Wayne and two young sons, Kai and Klay.

The 29-year-old took a break from some serious sunbathing to cool off in the clear blue waters but kept her standard issue WAG aviators glued to her face, natch.

It’s like she knew there were photographers around or something.

Coleen, who has known Wayne since their school days, recently revealed that the secret to their happy marriage is regular date nights.

“We've had our ups and downs and it's been tough at times but we've had so many happy ones too,” she told MailOnline.

“It's just about being as strong individually as we are together and that's all that can happen in a relationship.

“Also now that we have two kids, we make sure that we have time together. We make sure that one night a week we go out for dinner or go to the cinema.”

Or jet off to Barbados.

L'Oreal's Helen Mirren Adverts Cleared By Advertising Standards Authority After Airbrushing Complaints

L’Oreal have been cleared by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), following viewer complaints over an advert featuring Dame Helen Mirren.

The veteran actress starred in a TV ad for the beauty brand’s Age Perfect products, and the clip featured numerous close-ups of her stunning skin, while she provided a voiceover.

Watch the ad in question above...

“It’s the science I trust to help me look like me,” the voiceover declared. “Nourish and indulge your skin, and show those age spots who’s boss. Grow another year bolder. Look and feel more radiant. Our perfect age is now. So are we worth it? More than ever.”

However some viewers objected to the promo, with one accusing the brand of using “post-production techniques” to change the actress’s face, reports the Guardian.

L’Oreal countered that they had made efforts to ensure 69-year-old Helen looked as she does at red carpet events, and the ASA has now ruled that the brand did not make any false claims, or mislead potential customers.

A statement on the matter read: “The ASA considered that consumers would expect Helen Mirren to have been professionally styled and made-up for the photo shoot, and to have been photographed and filmed professionally in flattering conditions.”

The ASA also investigated the print ads, and ruled: “We understood that some retouching had been carried out but that the changes were minor and did not relate in any way to the claims made for the product.

“We considered this approach was acceptable so long as the resulting effect was not one which misleadingly exaggerated the effect the product was capable of achieving.

“With regard to [the TV ad] … We noted that wrinkles were clearly visible on Ms Mirren’s face in both ads, including across her forehead and around her mouth.”

“We considered that the recent press images of Ms Mirren would have reflected a similar degree of professional styling and makeup as the images in the ad, without any post-production amendments, and that her appearance in the ads was comparable to those more candid images.

“We therefore considered that the ads had not altered Ms Mirren’s appearance in a way that would exaggerate the likely effect that could be achieved by consumers’ use of the product, and concluded that the ads were not misleading.”

Helen began working with L’Oreal back in February, and in her first campaign, she delivered their classic ‘because I’m worth it’ line a twist, instead stating: “So are we worth it? More than ever.”

Jane Fonda was L’Oreal’s previous age-cream spokesperson, and she was also 69 years old when she began filming ads. Jealous? Us? Never…

Asif Kapadia, Amy (2015)

"The more people see of me the more they'll realise that all I am good for is making music." Amy Winehouse

This documentary is a fascinating mechanism. It often feels like an invasion of privacy. Kapadia is allowed access to an embarrassment of footage. Winehouse and friends captured heaps before the media got stuck in. It is as if Amy sensed that a telling of her story would need her own footage.

In the intimacy of home movies and friends' videos we meet the diminutive London teen with attitude in spades, an arresting understanding of jazz phrasing, and a winsome, no nonsense realness. The story of a youngster excited at the prospect of leaving home to skin-up and write songs all day.

No airs, no graces, and a deep certainty that fame was not for her. She indicated on more than one occasion that fame would make her crazy. The final montage of a glowing, pre-Back to Black Winehouse suggests Cautionary Tale.

To footage and voice-over interviews Kapadia adds helicopter shots of the Thames at dusk or dawn. He adds bird's eye shots rising and falling to East Finchley, Camden Town and Primrose Hill. The allusion is one of having little say in where you find yourself; angels and fallen aliens. It makes the Winehouse story a London story. It feels epic at times, Kitchen Sink at others. It is an epic Kitchen Sink story.

When her fame comes, airs and graces do not. The Winehouse portrayed here could only be herself. By the time the world's cameras rounded on her she had only ever been authentic, intimate and real with her own cameras and those of her friends. This is the blood that the avaricious media would scent and hound. The paparazzi are depicted virally: Elton John's Marilyn, Earl Spencer's Diana Spencer. The omnipresent pursuit of the paps traumatizes. The implication is that they kill.

The Winehouse ascent occurs in the film's grainier first act. Grainy because it relies on home footage and photographs, and Kapadia shoots a grey London, and grey British motorways, as Winehouse slogs. Her success is enjoyable at first; her guilelessness makes it. The second act is disturbing. The sunlight- in the footage- becomes more frequent with the arrival of a fun loving baritone. He enthralls Winehouse. The details of the relationship evoke hallmarks of dark romance.

It sets up the third act in which the diffident diva unravels as her peers and the media flay her. People close to her come to blows. We hear the interviews of her oldest friends. We see footage of those attached to brand Winehouse. Intimates make ill-judged decisions. The two approaches don't quarrel, but they are sequenced to clash. When the artist inhabits her own prophesied madness the film is unflinching. You might want to look away, but Kapadia will not.

Historians know their argument. They do their research; back it up. The story Kapadia tells is a synthesis of fascinating materials. How would Winehouse feel about the film? In it she visits her incarcerated husband and arrives to a swarm of paps at the jail gate. She stands, quietly astounded, frozen, hopeless in the glare. The film screams that Winehouse had suffered a dozen cameras too many. Kapadia's becomes another.

You can't get to know a complex young woman in two hours. Fans can presume to know an artist. In fact, we know what we have heard, read, seen, and then synthesized into another version. There are many Amy Winehouse stories to be told. Kapadia's is a compelling one.

Accomplished and Unsettling. DM

Rita Ora To Miss 'X Factor' Auditions In Manchester Due To Paris Fashion Week Date Clash

Rita Ora has only just joined the ‘X Factor’ panel, but she’s already taking days off from her new job, as it’s emerged she will miss the second day of filming for the new series.

The first round of auditions in Manchester were rearranged earlier this week following the death of Simon Cowell’s mother, having originally been scheduled for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (6-8 July).

When bosses moved filming dates to Wednesday and Thursday, Rita faced a schedule clash, as she was already signed up to appear at Paris Fashion Week on Thursday.

It has now been decided that the ‘Hot Right Now’ singer will be allowed to miss the try-outs.

A source told The Mirror: “Rita worked her schedule around the 'X Factor' auditions, so when those dates changed, there was a diary clash.

“The project was originally planned to take place at the start of the week but then it was fitted in to coincide with a break in recording ‘The X Factor’.”

Rita jetted out to Paris for Karl Lagerfeld's Chanel show when Monday’s auditions were cancelled, and she's due to fly back in time for Wednesday’s (8 July) recording.

New co-presenter Caroline Flack will also be forced to miss Thursday’s auditions, as she's needed Majorca, to host the next ‘Love Island’ eviction, leaving Olly Murs to present 'The X Factor' on his own.

However, an ‘X Factor’ spokesperson told The Mirror that a guest judge could sit alongside Simon, Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and Nick Grimshaw.

Grimmy admitted he was feeling anxious about taking over from former judge Louis Walsh on the show, tweeting ahead of Wednesday’s auditions: “Just got really nervous for @TheXFactor tomorrow and ate a tube of Pringles in 4.5 seconds.”

He added: “I got my nose waxed "for close ups" on the telly. what a world we live in. #TheXFactor.”

John Legend's Bum Appears On Instagram Days After Justin Bieber's (And We Have His Wife Chrissy Teigen To Thank!)

If you were scrolling Instagram on your morning commute, you might have got a little shock today, when John Legend’s derriere appeared on your smartphone.

If it didn’t, then quite frankly you need to start following his wife Chrissy Teigen. LIke, now.

Story continues below the (sort of NSFW) butt pic...

@Instagram

A photo posted by @chrissyteigen on

The supermodel is currently waging war on the app, as they keep deleting photos she’s posted that include her nipple, such as last week’s behind-the-scenes snap from her W magazine shoot.

Now, following Justin Bieber’s naked pic, Chrissy has shared a cheeky pic of John, who we’re assuming gave full consent to the move.

In an expert move, Teigs has captioned the pic with a simple: “@Instagram.” Nice.

Chrissy and John = Ultimate power couple

Chrissy’s war on Insta centres on their rule that snaps of topless women can’t be posted online, whereas topless blokes - and their bums - are just fine.

Does she have a point? Here’s a screenshot of one of Chrissy’s arty (and definitely NSFW) shots that was removed…

And for good measure, The Biebs’ bum pic, just one more time…

Chrissy is somewhat an Instagram pro, and she’s previously shared everything from snaps of her stretchmarks to tonnes of pics of comfort food (no seriously, there’s *loads*).

At the moment, Chrissy and John are enjoying a whistlestop tour of Europe, and recently attended a handful of events at Paris Fashion Week, just hours after enjoying a day out at Wimbledon.

'Up In The Air: Virgin Atlantic' TV Review: A First-Class Display Of Enthusiasm From Everyone, Including Richard Branson

Well, it was never going to be a hatchet job, with Virgin Atlantic opening its doors to the cameras for unprecedented access as it celebrates its 30th year with a bunch of bonnie rookie cabin crew recruits, a big party and a brand new aeroplane arriving on the tarmac.

Richard Branson may not run the company himself any more, but the sight of his arrival for the festivities - rockstar grin, the inevitable pilot's cap and kisses for the loyallest of colleagues - was a quick reminder of just how this maverick airline has continued to punch above its weight for three decades. Can they really have only 38 planes in their fleet? What a testament to branding!

richard branson
Richard Branson's grin is intact, but Virgin has some serious business questions to answer, just not in this programme

Meanwhile, the new recruits - 158 chosen from a staggering 2,000 applicants in 48 hours - battled to learn life-saving skills, construct a raft and get their hair in the right-sized mushroom. 58-year-old grandmother Katrine was following her life dream and, while she's no Jeremy Spake, was obviously a game gift for the camera crew.

Katrine is following her dream of becoming cabin crew, and - guess what - she makes it!

More strangely compelling were the seats and loos being designed over at Boeing, ready for the fleet's brand new flagship, the Dreamliner, all under the watchful eye of designer Nick. "It's Expresso, not brown," he patiently explained of the seat coverings. "That speaks quality," he squeaked, as he took delight in the slow-descending toilet lid. And that, we learned, is why one first class seat costs more than £100,000 to build. I could watch this stuff for hours.

Of course, unsaid between all these PR-friendly vignettes is the struggle between maintaining this kind of unique luxury, making Virgin passengers feel special and keeping the airline's coffers firmly in the black, a balancing act that has nearly toppled over in recent years. I'm hoping we'll get a bit more of that in the next two episodes, now we've firmly established that "it's great coming to work" and "oh my god, the pilots look so hot". Even the ever-smiling Richard B is beginning to wonder aloud, "We lost quite a lot of money, where's it gone?"

'Virgin Atlantic: Up in the Air' is available on ITV Player, and continues next week.

The Mirror reports that a press release was issued by publishers, stating: “Caroline will lift the lid on her personal life and relationships, including dating two of the world’s most eligible bachelors, Harry Styles and Prince Harry.”

Caroline has previously remained coy about her romance with 1D’s Harry, which became a national talking point in 2011 owing to their 14-year age gap, and the fact that the singer was just 17 at the time.

Speaking about the controversy earlier this year, she told The Telegraph: "I'm not going to ever apologise for it because there was nothing at the time that was serious or bad and nobody was getting hurt."

After Caroline and Harry split in January 2012, she went on to date music manager Jack Street, before they split during her stint on last year’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.

However, the pair were recently reported to have reunited, after they were spotted cosying up at Glastonbury last month.
