Revisiting Thrills and Swoon: Can Feminists Enjoy Mills and Boon?

$

I admit to being something of a literary snob. I know my Austen from Amis, Rushdie from Roy, Morrison from Marquez. Sometimes my inner voice even sounds a bit like Will Self, which is always terrifying because even I don't know what I'm saying, so wordy becomes that particular monologue. I'd make myself a ClipArt certificate for being unbearable if I could tear myself away from the purist paper format long enough (does Microsoft even do ClipArt anymore?).

But with the recent behemoth of success of the Fifty Shades trilogy and its sequel Grey, coupled with the anonymity granted to readers by the success of Kindles, romance fiction is very much at the forefront of popular tastes and our conversations. With traditional gender roles still very much prevalent in the majority of our cultural products, romance fiction has always seemingly represented the pinnacle of 'accepted' escapism for females, a consolatory prize for females being secondary in all other media and at total odds with feminist ideology. Having recently sat down and waded through Fifty Shades, because I'm a staunch believer that you cannot criticise a piece of work without experiencing it, I found it duller than ditchwater, less sexy than a wet sock with googly eyes and troubling in its controlling, abusive portrayal of a relationship between two non-equals. This couldn't be representative of the entire romance canon or the world might as well turn off the lights now. So I started looking at the big guns.

No name echoes more in the production, distribution and consumption of romance fiction than Mills and Boon. The image that most of us have of that is a short, flimsy paperback, most probably from a library or a grandmother's bookshelf featuring a long haired, busty heroine, about to have a wardrobe malfunction that will see her unceremoniously blocked by Instagram, staring into the wild eyes of a bare-chested Adonis, possibly on a shipwreck/beach/castle or other glamorous location. Formulaic, dated, predictable. Yet is that truly fair to say these are a product of the past?

Mills and Boon produce over 100 titles a month in a variety of ranges which range from the hospital romance to traditional historical romance to their Blaze series which is decidedly more sexually risqué. As of 2008, over 200million Mills and Boon books were sold per annum which still understates the number of regular consumers because it does not take into account library users or readers who lend their titles to friends.

What is interesting, beyond that of the content, is how Mills and Boon have embraced new technologies and trends to diversify their output and engage with their readers. They were an early adopter of Kindle and have performed spectacularly well on e-readers. Romance is the fourth most downloaded genre of book on Amazon, most likely because the Kindle affords a certain degree of camouflage for the consumer and a knockdown price. Long before Netflix and other subscription-for-content sites were popularised, Mills and Boon encouraged readers to subscribe to get the newest content in their preferred genre series, of which a minimum 6-8 books are published per month.

In 2014, Mills and Boon embraced an entirely revolutionary digital format for their genre based storytelling. They launched the Chatsfield Hotel website, a digitised fake hotel where several concurrent romance stories played out in real time, utilising video blog footage by actors and social media updates broadcast across a plethora of platforms from Facebook to Twitter. Users were able to get email updates when there was a new development in the story, watch interviews with the cast, check the Facebook/Twitter accounts of the characters as well as read their personal emails as the characters received them. This utilisation of a multi-channel immersive experience is groundbreaking as a storytelling device and as customer experience.

But does this matter if they're still putting out the same out pap? A closer look at the available story arcs would challenge that. Whilst there are still strict guidelines for authors on the website - there must be a love story, there may not be too many characters which detracts the audience attention from the central conflict, of which there must be a source - one can explore a great deal of taboos and issues whilst still remaining firmly within that remit.

What I was surprised to find from their website is the sheer variety. For instance, they carry paranormal ranges where the heroine and not the hero is the supernatural force within the book, turning the Twilight trope squarely on its head, a theme which echoes throughout the subset. The hunter becomes the hunted, so to speak. Their more erotically charged output features pre-marital sex, BDSM and even the search for a teenage girl to lose her 'V-plates', not to a pre-decided perfect man but just anyone who can rid her of her virginity. They carry crime and thriller novels, which intrigues me because of the existent connection between crime and romance fiction - famous novelist Nora Roberts being one of many writers who have straddled the two genres. A possible explanation for this is the expectation in horror/crime/romance for the depiction of extreme emotions.

Other readers describe how Mills and Boon novels have explored themes of eating disorders, of LGBT issues, of mental illness, infertility, severe disability, terminal illness and body image issues. Not all Mills and Boon characters are neatly white, thin and English - there is an Indian fiction subset and in 2007 Harlequin purchased "BET" BOOKS which was the largest producer of African American women's fiction, now subsequently released by Mills and Boon under their Kimani range. Authors/characters of a variety of ethnicities are represented both as heroes and heroines. Their physicalities range to represent every weight on the body spectrum. Their output defies age expectations also, with titles aimed at everyone from the traditional grandmother down to their Young Adult series which defies tradition by asserting every woman at every age's right to love, affection and sex, of which Germaine Greer would certainly be proud.

In creating a supposedly "women only" space - and it's worth remembering that according to the Romance Writers of America Association, 16% of Mills and Boon consumers are male - what Mills and Boon have done in the twenty first century is create a safe space where women can explore women's issues. In writing fiction for women, the authors have created women they recognise. In the narrow remit of the restriction of extraneous characters, it is easy to create a dynamic between people that is more egalitarian so many of the newer books feature sexually assertive women in a variety of job roles from menial workers to social media queens (how modern!) seeking to satisfy the gamut of needs we experience as women and to which society hasn't quite caught up, all whilst promoting safe sex. Not all the female characters end up with their man and many find an inner feminism which is the resolution of their conflict. Women have taken that narrowly defined space and used it to celebrate what it means to be a woman at any age and in their cultural zeitgeist.

That is not to say there isn't a darker history behind the more traditional Mills and Boon - one famous quote from Violet Dearheart who wrote for the publisher in the 1980s stated that she wrote her male characters "as if they were capable of rape". There are more than a few housewives being seduced, perhaps a few swept off their feet from temporary jobs. However, more than any other medium, romance appears to have evolved into a newer age, accepted the growth of position of women and feminism and created characters that are resistant to the expectations of the patriarchy. Perhaps then, to consume output with a daring and modern view of women and their needs, we are directly challenging that patriarchy.

We are not bad feminists for reading Mills and Boon in the same way we are not bad feminists if we watch the gratuitous depictions within Game of Thrones. It is the manner of depiction, the intention behind the character's conflict and our own responses as to whether we assimilate the dogma behind the cultural product that dictate whether one woman takes a piece to be feminist or otherwise. In exploring what Mills and Boon means to its readers, I find myself shedding some of my preconceptions and acquiring the willingness to explore a bit of harmless escapism and less likely to categorise the worth of literature to such a narrow standard.

This does come with a caveat however for the Fifty Shades of the world, you can be released into a genre that is moving and challenging the times, however, there is still no polishing a turd.

Jihad Masculinity

$

0
As someone who grew up between two cultures, I have been fascinated with the question of why men and women with similar backgrounds to mine were drawn towards radical messages of hate and violence. Was it a response to Western foreign policy, to the position of Muslims in the world? Did it come from an inevitable clash of diametrically opposed cultures? These were the questions in the back of my mind when I filmed my documentary Jihad, but what I found was unexpected, and much more complex.

A lot of words have been written about why women and girls would sign up to be 'jihadi brides' in service of the Islamic State, particularly given the extreme misogyny of their beliefs. But there has been much less examination of the sinister appeal of extremism to men and boys, as if it were natural for men to become involved in violence and brutality. And while there has been a lot of attention paid to the often restricted lives of South Asian and Middle Eastern women and girls, the question of what it means to grow up as a Muslim man in Western societies has been comparatively neglected. Often living next to white, working class communities where racist abuse and violence are a part of everyday life, these boys and young men absorb competing messages about what 'being a man' means.

deeyah khan

At home, it means being a good son: devoted to his mother, obedient to his father, the guardian of his sisters' honour; pressurised to achieve academically, to follow traditional rules around drugs, alcohol and contact with the opposite sex. On the other hand, in school, these values are reversed: the most "popular" boys are those who present themselves as being 'too cool for school', having high levels of independence from their parents and where drinking, clubbing, sexual relationships and drug use are normal rites of passage - even a source of status. Young Muslim men find themselves torn between these competing masculinities, being belittled for their ethnicity and religion as well as for their lack of conformity to their peers' definition of masculine behaviour. Even the most able may feel that the prospect of achieving status through social mobility is unlikely, in a world where hiring practices remain prejudiced and higher education increasingly expensive. Small wonder that some adopt the exaggerated masculinity of popular African American culture, from hiphop to gangs, as a way to reject being categorised as passive or feminine. But there is now another way to assert this precarious masculinity - through taking on the image and language of extremist Islam. Through adopting radical extremism, some young men who previously felt humiliated and emasculated by their peers can now feel powerful and intimidating, and gain status, attention from young women, and the comradeship and solidarity of other young men like themselves. As one of our interviewees says, jihad is perceived as "a very macho thing... it's kind of alpha male".

deeyah khan

Our media provides a continuing message that for men, heroism is defined through association with control, independence and the ability to commit violence, from superheroes to crime dramas. Most world leaders are male, and many present exaggeratedly masculine personas, such as dressing up in military garb at any opportunity, in a show of strength and dominance. The message seems to be that if young men are not respected, some of them will settle for being feared. Extremism is a complicated issue, but without addressing how it appeals to men and boys, we may be missing an important motivation, and a way to address the problems in our towns and cities. Feelings of humiliation and emasculation are keenly felt, and can lead to extreme and violent behaviours in many contexts. Building a culture in which varied forms of 'being a man' are accepted and respected may help all our boys and young men to feel more comfortable in their own skin, able to live according to their own desires than trying to fit themselves into a prewritten gender script....and less likely to assert their masculinity through violence and brutality.

REVIEW: Lionel Richie Lights Up The Riverside With A World-Class Performance At Henley Festival

Lionel Richie treated Henley Festival goers to a world-class performance last night, proving why, 40 years after he first went to the top of the charts, he’s still at the very top of his game.

Fresh from Glastonbury triumph and flushed with the success of an album at the top of the UK charts for the first time in two decades, Lionel knew exactly what his nostalgic audience wanted, and announced from the off, “I’m going to play as many hits as I can remember.”

lionel richie
Lionel Richie gives it his all for his Henley crowd

And so he did, swapping between the funk of Commodore era with ‘Brick House’ and the ballads that swept the world from ‘Penny Lover’ to ‘Stuck on You’ and an anthemic ‘Hello’. He danced and dallied, hammed it up for Henley – “this is what happens when dignified people go wild” - flirted with the ladies, and tipped a big wink to the gents - “It’s my job to warm them up, your job to take them home."

Finally, in a brave nod to the locals, he introduced the Henley Children’s Choir to accompany him on what he called “the most important song I’ve ever written” - and so, the summer evening faded away to the refrains of 'We are the World, We are the Children…' with Lionel leaving another audience, smaller than Glastonbury, but just as satisfied.

Best performed song: All Night Long
Personal favourite: Say You Say Me

Henley Festival continues today and through the weekend - listings info here.

Film Reviews: Love and Mercy - P'tit Quinquin - The Choir - The Reunion

Bill Pohlad's Love and Mercy is a spot on biopic of Brian Wilson, the troubled musical genius at the heart of the 60s group The Beach Boys - P'tit Quinquin, a laugh-out-loud wacky, wonderfully absurd murder mystery has the best comic duo since Peter Sellers and Burt Kwouk - The Choir is a feel good tale of a young soprano battling the odds - Anna Odell's debut feature, The Reunion tackles bullying, ostracism and psychological revenge but lacks the expected bite.

Rating: ****

To chart the life and times of Brian Wilson, the reclusive heart and soul of the 60s group The Beach Boys is quite an undertaking but Bill Pohlad's Love and Mercy is a fascinating and mesmerising portrait of Brian Wilson that uses two actors to play the troubled musical genius. At the top of their fame in the 60s, it wasn't a stand still time for Brian Wilson when the competition's The Beatles and Phil Spector. The result was Pet Sounds, a creatively original, innovative album using amongst other things coca cola cans, barking dogs, whistles, cycle bells - revolutionary and avant garde, and instantly dismissed by fellow Beach Boy Mike Love, Brian's cousin.

Paul Dano gives a terrific performance as the young Brian Wilson in the 60s, his musical genius obvious and the destructive signs of schizophrenia appearing. John Cusack plays Brian Wilson in the 70s and 80s, a reclusive, medicated, broken man in the care of the infamous pill man, psychologist Dr. Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatti) and his group of 'carers,' a prisoner in his own home. To add insult to injury The Beach Boys were managed by the manipulative and abusive Murray Wilson (Bill Camp), Brian's father who sold Brian's song catalogue for small cash.

The doom and gloom scenario changes in the 1980s when Brian Wilson meets Cadillac car dealer Melinda Ledbetter (Elizabeth Banks) and an unlikely love blossoms and she becomes his second wife.

With some terrific performances, Oren Moverman's sharp script, Dino Jonsater's spot on editing, Robert Yeoman's cinematography and a sound track echoing the classic California surfing sounds, Love and Mercy is a spot on biopic of Brian Wilson.

P'tit Quinquin is magical and utterly captivating. Absurd, zany, comic, surreal and slapstick and originally conceived as a four-part serial for the French-German network Arte but now in a cinematic version. Captain van der Weyden, (Bernard Pruvost), the best thing since Peter Seller's Inspector Clouseau, a man who greets every question with the most extraordinary facial and bodily ticks strides his patch around Picard, Northern France with his side kick, the inscrutable Carpentier (Philippe Jore). The duo are tasked with investigating the mystery of the dead cow in an abandoned World War II bunker stuffed with human remains. If that's bad enough lurking on the sidelines is the mischievious scoundrel Quinquin (Alane Delhaye) and his trumpet playing girlfriend Eve (Lucy Caron) and their gang of friends. Bodies pile up and Captain van der Weyden and Quinquin grapple with an ever deepening mystery.

Beautifully photographed by Guillaume Deffontaines, P'tit Quinquin is a laugh-out-loud wacky and wonderfully absurd comedy with a tender naturalistic feel that pokes below the surface of French rural life and touches on marital discord, illicit sex, racism, immigration and violence. The cast are superb. It's Bernard Pruvost and Philippe Jore, a French rural take on Peter Seller's Inspector Jacques Clouseau and Burt Kwouk's Cato Fong without the karate up against Alane Delhaye and Lucy Caron, the magical kids playing summer time detective.

The voices are wonderful, the choral music's stunning and Francois Girard's The Choir (Boy Choir) has that feel good factor but the story line's predictable with a no surprise happy ending.

11 year-old Stet (Garrett Wareing) may have a god given soprano voice but that means little when you have to care for an alcoholic mother, battle the world and attend school. When the school principle (Debra Winger) persuades Carvelle (Dustin Hoffman), the Head of an elite Boy Choir School in New Jersey to visit and hear Stet's remarkable voice, it's all too much and Stet bottles it and runs off. When his mother's killed in a car crash, Stet's father Gerard (Josh Lucas), who has a new family appears on the scene with a cheque book and a persuasive manner that gets his rebellious son accepted into the choir school and out of the way. A tale of a rebellious poor boy whose remarkable voice is recognised and nurtured by Master Carvelle, who battles school bullies, is dismissed as rather ordinary by ego driven Drake (Eddie Izzard) who's in a power struggle for Carvelle's job and an oppressed school principle, Ms Steel (Kathy Bates) who considers Stet ripe for expulsion. Great cast and a feel good touch but it's the story line predictability that nags.

Swedish conceptual artist, Anna Odell courted controversy and grabbed the headlines with her attempt to jump off of a bridge in Stockholm as part of her graduation show 'Suicide.' The result was time spent in a psychiatric ward and publicity you couldn't buy. The Reunion, Odell's feature debut, a study of bullying, ostracism and psychological revenge won the FIPRESCI Award at Venice in the International Critics' section for best debut but is far less controversial.

A twenty year reunion party for the students of class 9c sees aquaintences renewed but Anna (Anna Odell) who was bullied and ostracised during her school years isn't invited. With Anna played by herself, The Reunion is Anna Odell's idea of of how it may have been if she'd been invited and could have confronted her tormentors. Divided into two parts, The Speech sees Anna turn up at the reunion and seek redress for her years of torment which rapidly sees the group enthusiastically revert to their hierarchical bullying roles of twenty years ago and Anna's physically ejected from the gathering. The second part, The Meetings intended as a documentary interviewing those involved settles for a reconstruction as class mates refuse to appear on camera.

The Reunion's been compared to Thomas Vinterberg's The Celebration, but it lacks the mastery and vigour of the latter. Nevertheless, it's an interesting concept that plays with fact and fiction, fear, courage, truth and lies but with a staged rather than a true documentary in the second part it looses strength and momentum.

Ghostbusters’ fans have been treated to the first look of the all-female reboot.

SEE ALSO:

New pictures show Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones in character in their iconic boilersuits, as they filmed scenes for the new film.

The image circulated on Twitter after a ‘Ghostbusters’ fan account posted it on their page.

They captioned it: “Who ya' gonna call?! Here's your first look at all four Ghostbusters suited up in the new uniforms! #ghostbusters.”

Earlier this week, director Paul Feig also unveiled the revamped version of the ghoul-slaying team’s iconic car, Ecto-1, posting a picture on Twitter.

However, it divided the film's die hard fans, as while some appreciated the sneak preview, others were angry that it had lost its predecessor's Cadillac's tail fins.

Chris Hemsworth will also feature in the rebooted film, playing the role of the receptionist, previously played by Annie Potts in the original ‘Ghostbusters’ series.

The news that ‘Ghostbusters’ was being given an all-female cast was followed by an announcement that a second, male-led reboot would also be made.

The project is being helmed by producers Ivan Reitman and Dan Akyroyd, with Channing Tatum linked to one of the leading roles.

Paul Feig’s ‘Ghostbusters’ is currently slated to hit cinemas in July 2016.

It’s been eight years since ‘The O.C.’ was cruelly taken away from us after just four seasons, and quite frankly, our lives have never been the same since.

We’re not being dramatic either (well, at least not compared to the privileged, fictional residents of Newport Beach) and often find ourselves wondering what our favourite stars of yesteryear are up to now.

‘The O.C.’ launched a number of top stars, giving future A-lister Chris Pratt his first taste of fame, and in the years since it went off-air, Rachel Bilson, Adam Brody and plenty of others have forged successful careers in TV and film.

Not all of the cast members have focussed their efforts on acting though, and other pursuits include releasing albums, and even providing voiceovers for video games.

So who’s been up to what? Check out what the cast of ‘The O.C.’ are doing now below…

Big Brother’ lost two housemates on Friday, with Harry Amelia and Sam Kay leaving in a shock double eviction.

SEE MORE:

Harry was the first housemate to leave, after being nominated for eviction, alongside Chloe Wilburn, Jack McDermott and Sam.

She left the house to a chorus of boos, although she seemed nonplussed about the negative reaction, telling the crowd she “doesn’t care” about what they thought of her.

Harry learns she's been evicted

Speaking to Emma Willis, she admitted: “On the outside not a lot of people like me - but I have friends that will take a bullet for me so them out there can fuck off.”

Harry also spoke about her turbulent relationship with Nick Henderson, who was initially nominated for eviction this week, but he paid £5000 in a ‘Cash Bomb’ twist to put Chloe up for eviction instead.

She said: “Me and Nick agreed under the duvet that the House is not real life and you can't start a relationship, I would like to see where it progresses. Nick is a lovely person but all I hear is people being together in the House and then it going tits up.”

Following Harry’s eviction, Big Brother dropped one final ‘Cash Bomb’ twist, revealing that the housemates would have to choose amongst themselves whether Chloe, Sam or Jack left the house.

Each of the remaining nominated housemates had an amount of money associated with them, with Sam having £15,000, Chloe having £10,000 and Jack getting just £1000 - and whoever they chose to leave would have that amount added to the eventual prize fund.

The group chose Sam, who told Emma, following her eviction: “What can I say, I wasn't expecting that, I understand why they did it. I knew it would be me 100% and it was a combination of me and also because I have the highest amount on my head.”

Six housemates now remain in the ‘BB’ house, ahead of this week’s final, with either Chloe, Cristian, Danny, Jack, Joel or Nick scooping the winner’s title this Thursday.

Scott Heller, a reporter for the New York Times, confirmed the news on his Twitter page, on Friday night, revealing a statement from Roger’s PR representative, which read: “Sad news… Roger Rees, Tony award-winning actor, passed away tonight at home, after brief illness.”

Earlier this year, Roger had taken on the leading role in the Broadway play, ‘The Visit’, but had to pull out due to his undisclosed illness.

He famously played Robin Colcord in ‘Cheers’ and Lord John Marbury on ‘The West Wing’, but cinema fans will also recognise him from the film ‘Robin Hood: Men In Tights’, where he starred as the Sheriff of Rottingham.

His work also includes roles in ‘Titanic’ and the film version of William Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.

In the early 1980s, Roger bagged himself a Tony Award, thanks to his appearance in ‘The Life And Adventures Of Nicholas Nickleby’, an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ famous novel.

Over a two-year period, between 1980 and 1982, he played the title role in the play, treading the boards on both Broadway and London’s West End.

His final role was in the spy thriller ‘Survivor’, where he appeared alongside Pierce Brosnan, James D’Arcy and Milla Jovovich, as Dr. Emil Balan, which was released in UK cinemas just last month.

Roger is survived by his husband, the playwright Rick Elice.

Ed Sheeran had a surprise in store for fans during the first night of his shows at Wembley Stadium, when Elton John but in an impromptu appearance in the middle of his set.

Sir Elton has famously dueted with George Michael on ‘Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me’, Lady Gaga on the ballad ‘Hello Hello’ and Blue on a re-imagined version of ‘Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word’, but his collaboration with Ed was a little more light-hearted.

Playing to the sold-out stadium crowd, the pair launched into a surprising rendition of legendary singer’s 1976 track, ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’.

ed elton

Elton originally released the cheesy hit, which reached the top of the UK singles chart, as a duet with Kiki Dee, though he later re-recorded it in a house style in the 1990s, featuring vocals from the ‘Glamazon’ herself, drag queen RuPaul.

The unexpected collaboration between Ed and Elton came as a surprise to the ‘Lego House’ singer’s fans, who were also treated to a performance of ‘Afire Love’ from the pair, a track from Ed’s chart-topping album, ‘x’.

Ed’s sold-out Wembley Stadiums made history earlier this year, when he became the first act to headline at the London venue without a backing band.

Noel Gallagher initially stated his disdain when it was revealed that Ed had sold out three dates at the stadium, claiming: “I don't think I can live in a world where that's even possible."

Luckily, Ed didn’t seem fazed by the remarks, responding on Twitter with a simple: “I do.”

He’ll be performing his final two dates on Saturday and Sunday night, and we have a feeling there could be some more guest appearances from legendary artists...

However, some fans of the series have speculated that this may have been a fix on the part of the Channel 5 reality show’s producers, which a frustrated Rylan was keen to point out was definitely not the case.

When Emma quizzed him about whether Twitter users suspected it was a fix, during Friday’s episode of ‘Big Brother’s Bit On The Side’, Rylan explained: “In the break just before we came on I had a little look on Twitter, and it was like, ‘Oh it’s a fix! Of course Sam got the 15 grand.”

Raising his voice, he then insisted: “They picked them themselves!! What more do you wanna see?!”

Emma then agreed, adding: “It was inevitable, even if she had £1000 on her head, I think it still would have been Sam.”

Following Friday’s shock double eviction, which also saw Harry Amelia facing the boot, just six housemates remain in the ‘BB’ residence, ahead of this Thursday’s live final.

Peter Andre has married his long-term partner Emily MacDonagh, it has been confirmed.

SEE MORE:

Earlier this week, rumours began circulating that the couple - who first revealed that they were an item three years ago - would be tying the knot on Saturday afternoon.

OK! have now confirmed that Peter and Emily are now officially husband and wife, following a wedding ceremony at Mamhead House in Exeter.

The event has been described as a “classy affair” by The Sun, who also claimed that Peter had a surprise in store for his wedding guests, as he performed a specially-written track for his bride.

Ahead of the wedding, the newspaper reported that the former ‘I’m A Celebrity’ contestant had penned a new song in Emily’s honour, which he would be performing for her on their big day.

A source said: “Peter wants to make it a really personal affair. The song is very poignant and means a lot to him.”

However, to keep guests happy, he was also said to be whizzing through some old classics at the reception as well, with the insider continuing: “He’s also planning to perform some more uplifting tracks to get everyone in the mood to party.”

We wonder if his chart-topping single ‘Mysterious Girl’ was one of them - roll your eyes all you want, but don’t pretend that wouldn’t get you up on that wedding dance floor.

Peter and medical student Emily first confirmed reports that they were dating in 2012, before eventually revealing their engagement last year. They also have a one-year-old daughter, Amelia.

The ‘Insania’ singer was married once before, to ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ winner and former glamour model, Katie Price, who he divorced in 2009.

He and Katie have two children together, Junior and Princess Tiami.

Huge congrats to Pete and Emily!

Why the Official UK Charts Have Moved

$
0
0
It's a rare thing in your working life to find yourself handling history.

I suspect those working on the new Harper Lee novel To Set A Watchman feel that way right now. It's hard to imagine a more highly anticipated book launch.

And, here at the Official Charts, it has been a rather remarkable 12 months.

Just a year ago, audio streams were ushered into the Official Singles Chart for the first time. I know, it's just been 12 months. Crazy isn't it?

Then, in February, streams were reflected for the first time in the Official Albums Chart - reflecting the increased migration of music fans, from ownership of bodies of work, to listening to those bodies of work under a subscription service.

This past week has been a further step in the evolution of the Official Charts - last week, the much heralded Apple Music service contributed to the Official Charts. And Friday July 10 (remember the date) was the day the Official Charts announcement moved to a Friday after 27 years on a Sunday.

The Official Charts have always evolved, across the 60 years-plus of their existence, to adjust to differing times, from vinyl to cassette, to CD, to downloads, to streams. It is what we do.

Why has it moved? There is one main reason which has driven the change - the international music industry is co-ordinating its release days for the first time in history and settled on Friday as "New Music Friday" as it has been dubbed.

It makes total sense, if you consider the logic. In a digital world, artists with an international audience have the ability to communicate directly to their fans across the world, wherever they are, in the blink of an eye.

When Adele finally gets round to releasing her new album, she will be able to reach out to her 23million Twitter followers instantly and promote it directly to them. The same could be said of any number of artists with an audience which straddles international borders.

In the old era, tweeting to your fans that your new album is out was hampered by the simple fact that 'out' meant Friday in Australia and Germany, Monday in the UK, Tuesday in the US and so on. Moving to a synchronised release day means 'out' translates into Friday. Everywhere.
And if all the new releases are coming out on a Friday it is logical that the charts follow - so that every week's chart includes a full week's sales.

The opportunity for the Official Chart is huge. Friday afternoon is a strong time for drivetime listeners - add in the natural community of chart fans and you have a potentially powerful radio audience. Greg James is also a fantastic advocate for the charts too - a brilliant DJ, a self-confessed radio nerd who loves what the Official Chart is and what it represents.

Friday also feels like a natural home for the Official Chart, which represents a full-stop on the music community's week, a time for summing up everyone's weekly efforts in the world of music - and providing a starting point for every music fan's weekend. These, after all, are the nation's favourite tunes.

On top of that, for all the artists vying for supremacy in the Official Singles Chart and Official Albums Chart, Friday is the start of the weekend, the traditional weekly celebration with friends, fans and audiences. On a very basic level, there is much more chance of a Number 1 artist stepping on to a stage to celebrate their new Number 1 on a Friday evening than on a Sunday evening.

To maximise this, we have launched a new award to mark the moment - the new Official Number 1 Album Award, a gold-plated sister to the Official Number 1 Single Award. And Ed Sheeran was the first recipient.

There is bound to be some who will miss the Official Charts on a Sunday. It is, after all, a tradition, a habit maybe. And we all love a little nostalgia.

But the world changes - and the music world changes more than most.
Rest assured, as the world changes, the Official Charts will change with it.

The hunt for Lucy Beale’s killer is set to step up a notch in ‘EastEnders’, when a witness comes forward with new information.

Since February, soap fans have known that Bobby is responsible for his sister’s death, however the police are still unaware, and their investigation is on-going.

With DCI Marsden at the helm, officers have made progress, and on Monday (13 July), an arrest will made.

Then, later this month, Marsden and her team are aided when a witness comes forward with new information.

Bosses are keeping tight-lipped as to what the info is - and who reveals it - so viewers will have to wait and see whether this finally spells the end for the investigation.

This is soapland though, and secrets rarely stay private for long - could young Bobby really be sent to jail though?

Elsewhere in the Square, there’s another mystery on-going, as Stacey attempts to figure out what her mystery key actually does.

Rumour has it, it could somehow prove that her brother Sean is actually Kat Slater’s son, and Jean’s OTT reaction after seeing the key hanging on Stacey’s necklace has only fuelled speculation.

Watch ‘EastEnders’ from monday 20 July to see the Lucy Beale murder case unfold.

Congratulations are in order for ‘X Factor’ couple Stevi Ritchie and Chloe Jasmine, who have revealed that they are engaged.

SEE MORE:

The pair met while they were both competing on the most recent series of the ITV singing competition, admitting that sparks flew between them while they were sharing the ‘X Factor’ house last year.

Since leaving the competition, the two have remained a couple, attending events together and being photographed, sharing totally-not-staged-who-said-they-were-staged-they-were-definitely-not-staged PDAs in the street.

Stevi and Chloe have now revealed their plans to get hitched in the future, after he proposed to her, with a diamond ring.

Speaking to The Sun, Chloe reveals: “I had no idea Stevi was going to propose so when he got down on one knee, I didn’t understand at first.

“He pulled this box out of the bag he’d given me and said, ‘Babe, will you marry me?’ I was shocked, I couldn’t believe he wanted to marry me."

In a wonderful piece of gratuitous name-dropping, Chloe goes on to say: “I sent Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, my X Factor mentor, a message to thank her for bringing this amazing person into my life.

“She texted back saying congratulations, and she was so happy for us both. I’d definitely invite her to the wedding if she wanted to come.”

Stevi, meanwhile, has opened up about his thriving sex life with Chloe, confessing: “We have had a really great connection in bed since the start. If we were at sixth base before, now we’re definitely a ten — the sex is very magical.

“Instead of saying ‘shag’, now I say ‘make love’. When you have a one-night stand with someone then it’s just a shag. But when you’re in a relationship and in love, you say ‘make love’. So I would say that I’m making love to my fiancée Chloe-Jasmine tonight.”

Beautiful stuff, let’s hope he includes that in his wedding speech.

Chloe was recently said to be joining Stevi in the ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ house, when the new series kicks off later this month, after he was reportedly offered a place on this year’s line-up.

Kylie Minogue Releasing Christmas Album? 'Spinning Around' Singer 'Recording Festive Classics For New Collection'

Kylie Minogue fans who were left gagging for more when she released ‘Kiss Me Once’ last year will be pleased to hear she could be about to return with a new album, sooner than anyone anticipated - although the details of her new release won’t exactly be music to everybody’s ears.

SEE MORE:

It has been claimed that Kylie could be about to drop her first ever Christmas album, which would hit shelves in time for the festive season, later this year.

Following in the footsteps of Mariah Carey, Justin Bieber and Leona Lewis, Kylie is reportedly recording a mix of “festive classics” and new “disco-influenced” Christmassy tracks, which is rumoured to be part of a one-album deal with Warner/Parlophone.

A source tells The Sun: “Kylie is halfway through recording it. It’s believed all the tracks will be disco-influenced.

“It’s likely the album will include a mixture of festive classics and even some original material.

“She wants to take her time on a new release but can’t be away from the charts for long, so a Christmas album is the obvious choice.”

All we’re saying is that if there’s not a track on there called ‘Can’t Get Yule Of My Head’, we’ll be having words...

Although the new release would mark Kylie’s first full Christmas album, she previously recorded her own version of ‘Santa Baby’ in 2000, which was later included on the two-track EP, ‘A Kylie Christmas’, a decade later.

Courtney Stodden certainly turned heads when she put in an appearance at Comic-Con over the weekend, with her unusual take on Captain Marvel's attire.

SEE MORE:

Well, we say “attire” - at first glance the ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ contestant looks like she’s wearing a superhero costume, but, upon closer inspection, all she’s actually sporting are two nipple covers, underwear, some red gloves and a whooooooole lot of body paint.

Oh, and a scarf tied around her waist, of course. God forbid she should get cold.

Courtney was snapped outside the comic book convention on Saturday, where she was trying to raise awareness of animal rights’ organisation Peta, who she has worked closely with in the past.

She certainly managed to raise a few eyebrows if nothing else, posing for a few cheeky snaps for photographers, while handing out leaflets about converting to veganism, all while channelling her inner Captain Marvel.

This isn’t the first time that Courtney has shown a bit of skin with the intention of promoting the animal rights cause, though.

Last year, she was photographed giving a new meaning to salad dressing (we know, we know), while donning a bikini made out of lettuce, handing out vegan hot-dogs in Washington, DC.

During this year’s Comic Con, a new trailer for ‘Batman v Superman’ was unveiled, showing Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill in action, while it also gave Jennifer Lawrence the chance to pose for a fittingly brilliant photo with Bill Murray.

'EastEnders' Actress June Brown, Who Plays Dot Cotton, 'Turns Down 'Reduced Hours' Offer' From BBC Producers

June Brown has reportedly turned down the opportunity to have her hours on ‘EastEnders’ scaled back.

SEE MORE:

It has been claimed that the 88-year-old soap veteran - who is currently celebrating her 30th year playing Dot in ‘EastEnders’ - was given the option by BBC bosses to have her hours on set slashed, to try and make filming easier for her, though she’s said to have refused the offer.

An insider tells The Mirror: “The producers are very conscious of the demands of the schedule, and quietly suggested they could limit the amount of time she needs to spend on set.

“June has just come back from a break after the very demanding murder trial storyline which saw her take centre stage for hours of television, but she’s as raring to go as ever.

“Producers want to make sure she is well looked after – she’s an icon of the show and a national treasure.”

This year, Dot’s murder trial storyline made for one of 2015’s biggest soap stories, though the pressure clearly isn’t getting to acting pro June, who - according to the newspaper - has told friends she still wants to play the role well into her 90s.

June has previously spoken about her desire to continue working in ‘EastEnders’ as long as she possibly can, joking last year: “I’ll probably die first and they’ll take me out in a box.”

It looks like all that talk of her desire to take part on this year’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ has paid off for Michelle Heaton.

The former Liberty X singer has reportedly been snapped up by show bosses after they were impressed with her enthusiasm about possibly taking part.

Last month the reality star said it would be her ‘dream’ to appear on the BBC One show after a tough year that has seen her undergo a hysterectomy and double mastectomy after discovering she carries the deadly cancer gene BRCA2.

And now it looks like that dream is about to become a reality.

A source told The Sun: "The bosses were struck by Michelle's story and enthusiasm for the show.”

During an interview with Lorraine Kelly, the mum-of-two said taking part in the show would help her ‘feel womanly again’.

“I think it’s every girl's dream to do a show that makes you feel really glamorous and special,” she said. “And the last few years have been really rough so it’d be really nice to feel womanly again and do something positive and learn a craft.”

Other stars rumoured to be taking part in the new series of ‘Strictly’, which will be back on our screens from September, include Peter Andre, Alan Titchmarsh, Sarah Jane Crawford and EastEnders’ Shane Richie.
