Leonardo DiCaprio appears opposite Tom Hardy, in the new trailer for their upcoming film, ‘The Revenant’.

The film tells the story of Hugh Glass, the real-life fur trapper and frontiersman from the 19th century, left to die by his companions, who rob him and then abandon him when he is savagely attacked by a bear.

Unbeknown to them, he survives the violent attack, and seeks revenge on those who betrayed him. British actor Will Poulter and Domhnall Gleeson also appearing in supporting roles.

‘The Revenant’ is directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who scooped the Best Film Academy Award at this year’s ceremony for 'Birdman', with some critics suggesting this could be the film that finally be the one that earns Leonardo DiCaprio his Oscar.

The actor has been nominated for Best Actor on three separate occasions, most recently in in 2014 for his role in ‘The Wolf Of Wall Street’, while he also earned a Best Supporting Actor nod in 1994, for playing Arnie Grape in ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?’.

Despite this, he’s yet to actually nab the coveted acting prize, though that could all be about to change.

Meanwhile, ‘The Revenant’ will be one of five Tom Hardy films to be released in 2015, having already garnered critical acclaim for his performance in ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, and a double-appearance as both Kray twins in ‘Legend’ coming soon.

The Future of the BBC: It's Up to You

$
0
0
Who do you think said this? "The BBC is at the very heart of Britain. It is one of this nation's most treasured institutions - playing a role in almost all of our lives."

Or this: "The BBC remains much-loved by audiences, a valuable engine of growth
and an international benchmark for television, radio, online and journalism. It has showed this countless times over the last Charter period: coverage of events that bring us together like the Olympics; television that entertains millions like Miranda, Sherlock and Bake Off or that educates and informs like the BBC's many world-leading nature and history documentaries; award-winning radio, with half of adults in the UK listening to one or more of the BBC's music stations each week; the UK's most popular website; and trusted news coverage that is relied upon at home and abroad, with the World Service reaching a global audience of 210 million and continuing to play an important role in the way that the UK is perceived internationally."

Bizarrely, given what we know about the government's view of the BBC, both quotes come from its Green Paper published on Thursday. The corporation's most devoted fan could hardly have put it better. But do not be fooled: the government is pointing a dagger at the heart of the BBC - and what emerges from the consultation process now under way could be, in effect, the weapon of its destruction.

So this is where you come in. As the BBC itself said in a statement: "The BBC is not owned by its staff or by politicians, it is owned by the public. They are our shareholders. They pay the licence fee. Their voice should be heard the loudest."

Now is the time to start shouting. Sign petitions, write to your MP. Go to the consultation website; send an email to BBCCharterReviewConsultation@culture.gov.uk or write a letter to BBC Charter Review Consultation, DCMS, 100 Parliament Street, London SW1A 2BQ. Tell them what you want the BBC to do, tell them what you value. But don't put it off - the consultation process ends on 8 October.

The key issue is not what is in the Green Paper, but what decisions are taken at the end of the process. The BBC's commercial rivals - other broadcasters, online content providers and newspaper groups - will all weigh in with hefty submissions arguing why the BBC must be scaled back. Their arguments will all boil down to the same basic point: if the BBC did less, we would be able to make more money.

It's as simple as that. In the words of the Green Paper: "A smaller BBC could see the public pay less for their TV licence and would also be likely to have a reduced market impact."

Let's examine that for a moment: yes, a smaller BBC that did less would cost less. If it cost less, the licence fee could be cheaper. But suppose the services it cuts (local radio, online services, BBC4) include the one service you value most - how would you feel then about paying for a licence? The whole point about a licence bought by everyone is that it enables the BBC to provide something for everyone. Ninety-seven per cent of the UK population use the BBC every week. (If you haven't seen it yet, click here to see the BBC's own video.)

It's important to be clear-minded about this: arguing for a smaller BBC is the same as arguing for an end to the licence fee. If the BBC stops trying to make programmes for everyone, soon enough those who are no longer being catered for will stop paying. And with no licence fee, the BBC will shrivel to barely a shadow of its former self. Just ask any American what their public service broadcasters provide - that's the future of the BBC with no licence fee.

Of course, it is right that there should be a debate about these issues. There are 101 things that the BBC could do better, and it is good that once every decade it is forced to take a hard look in the mirror and ask itself some tough questions.

But it is crucial that the right voices are listened to, not just the politicians who watch virtually no television and who listen to the radio only if they're being interviewed, nor the media moguls who can't bear the way the BBC insists on creating output that is more popular, better loved and more respected than their own.

It is also important to ensure that the debate is conducted in a historically accurate context. Let's have no more of this nonsense about how the BBC has grown into some kind of media monster, leaving far behind its "core mission".

As the media historian Professor David Hendy of Sussex university pointed out in a letter to The Guardian, as long ago as 1924, the BBC's founder John Reith said "it is most important that light and entertaining items" be broadcast, because "pleasing relaxation after a hard day's work" was just as important as programmes of "edification and wider knowledge".

Perhaps you can't bear Strictly Come Dancing, Eastenders or The Archers. Perhaps you love Wolf Hall, David Attenborough and The World Tonight. For 40p a day, the current cost of the licence fee, you can have it all. As I pointed out in a piece I wrote exactly a year ago, if you scrap the licence fee, you'll end up paying more and getting less.

And if you don't believe me, I urge you read this excellent piece by Richard Sambrook, professor of journalism at Cardiff university and a former head of news at the BBC: "If the people of Britain do not want to see the erosion and dismantling of one of the country's most successful public institutions, they need to make it unambiguously clear now."

It really is up to you. We know what the government wants. We know what the BBC's rivals want. The only people who can stop them are the people who use the BBC, and value it, day in and day out. That means you.

Mindfulness and Teens - Will They Ever Work Together?

$
0
0
I'm deep, deep into the heart of finishing my book, either called, Wake the F...K Up or Frazzled, I want the first title but I'm told it might not make it into bookshops and that would send me over the cliff face. I'm pretty obsessed with it now as my deadline is rearing its ugly head. I'm on the bit about mindfulness for the teenager because so many people ask me how they can tone their teen down. You can't. He's supposed to be like that, it comes with the package of puberty. Why are we forgetting that we all had puberty - it's happened for thousands of generations to everyone everywhere in the world. Pimples are universal and will sprout on a Zulu as well as a Swede. A universal mood swing starts at 11 for girls to 18 and for boys it starts at 13 and finishes around 24 and, for some of them, never.
The fact that this happens to everyone should be a great relief to parents. Understand that your teenagers are just developing normally for their age and they won't (as my parents thought) necessarily become serial killers.

At some point the teenager will find his parents boring and old-fashioned which incites him to think more innovatively, inventing new ideas and concepts - anything so he doesn't have to end up like them (He usually does but as a teen he's aiming higher). Rather than learning by rote as he did as a kid, he now argues and wants to try out everything (it's exhausting). This will go on until adulthood when he's stuffed back into the box. Each generation feels they have to top the last one and come up with unique solutions to be able to survive an ever more complex world. Your old dial-a-number telephone has been replaced by an iPhone 208 and your hoover is now voice activated.

Each generation thinks their parents have screwed up the world. The teen's job is to clean up his parent's mistakes and blame them for being selfish, greedy bastards who just think about themselves and are to blame for the world being a mess, the ice cap melting and the fact that there are no jobs or money because we've spent it all. (On these points they're right on all fronts).

When kids hit their teens, if they're male they need to disengage from mommy and if they're female from daddy. The reason being that they are so in love with their parents as children that if it weren't for the biological separation they would want to marry them, (see Oedipus). At this point friends become far more important than the parents because in the future they are the ones who are going to protect and nurture them when mommy and daddy are in heaven.

Just as a baby animal will trot, leap, fly away from its parents straight after its birth, so will your teenager fly the coop to seek independence, which they'll need if they're ever going to be able to steer through the sharp rocks of life. They are bidding you farewell to explore the world on their own, to seek novelty, take risks, connect with peers, deal with jerks and finally realize that the phrase they always come up with, "It's not fair.", Is actually true. He starts to develop a sense of a self. This self wants you out of the picture so you've gone, in the blink of an eye, from God status to something sticky on the bottom of their shoe. I write all of this from bitter experience and am here to pass this bitterness on.

Hollyoaks’ actress Stephanie Davis was dropped from the Channel 4 soap after turning up to work drunk, it has emerged.

It was announced earlier this week that the star - who plays Sinead Roscoe - had her contract terminated “with immediate effect”, but producers offered no further comment as to why she was dropped.

A spokesperson for Stephanie has now told The Sun that she was finally given the boot following a series of warnings from bosses about her wild behaviour.

“Stephanie’s contract was terminated following warnings and a final incident in which she turned up unfit to work because of alcohol consumption,” they said.

The Mirror also reports that Executive Producer Brian Kirkwood visited the Stephanie’s home in Mersyside to deliver the news.

“She was in trouble for excessive partying and boozing and bosses took a one-more-strike-and-you’re-out policy,” a source said.

"Turning up drunk is unacceptable in any workplace so bosses were forced to take action.”

The character will be written out of the show immediately, and Stephanie will not film any exit scenes.

She joined the soap in 2010 along with the rest of the O’Connor family, when she was just 16.

Co-star James Sutton - who plays John Paul McQueen - set tongues wagging in the wake of Stephanie’s axing, appearing to mock the actress on Twitter.

Digital Spy reports that he made reference to her past on Andrew Lloyd Webber talent show ‘Over The Rainbow’, tweeting a screengrab of him listening to ‘Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead’ on his iTunes.

‘Hollyoaks’ airs nightly at 6.30pm on Channel 4.

The panel had watched a father and daughter duo perform at auditions at London’s SSE Arena earlier this week, when he turned to the former Girls Aloud singer to ask for her comments, declaring: “Let’s start with Cheryl Cole.”

According to the Daily Star, the comment drew gasps from the audience, before Rita Ora joked that she was “getting out of the way”, having been sat in between the pair.

Simon Cowell also shouted “awkward” repeatedly down his microphone.

Cheryl snapped back: “Just call me Cheryl. Or Chezza.”

Cheryl dropped ‘Cole’ from her name when she married Jean Bernard Fernandez-Versini last year.

She was previously married to footballer Ashley Cole, but their marriage broke down when it emerged he had cheated on her several times.

It isn’t the first time Grimmy has made the gaffe though, as The Sun reports that he also called Cheryl by her previous name on his Radio 1 Breakfast Show, describing Jean Bernard as her “boyfriend”, before quickly correcting himself.

However, Jennifer has now vehemently denied the allegations.

Her spokesperson told MailOnline: "I have commented in the National Enquirer and others. It's 100 percent false.

"Jennifer has never had a romantic or sexual relationship with Matt LeBlanc."

Billy Connolly Forced To Give Up Playing His Banjo Because Of Parkinson's Disease

Billy Connolly has had to give up playing his beloved banjo and guitar because of Parkinson's Disease.

The 72-year-old comedian and actor started out as a folk singer before developing the stand-up act that made him famous and led to a career in television and film.

He was often pictured with his banjo but has now said he can no longer play it as he prepares to travel across the United States by rail for a new ITV series.

Connolly said Parkinson's Disease has particularly affected his left hand, preventing him from playing his favourite instruments.

In an interview in Canada to promote his stand-up tour, he said: "I'm starting a documentary series in a month's time following the railways around America.

"I'm going to festivals and state fairs and all that.

"I've been longing to do it for a long time. The only trouble is that we're going to bluegrass festivals and I've got Parkinson's Disease and it's really affected my left hand and I can't play the banjo or guitar any more, but I'll join in on the singing at least.

"It's been a rough go between that and the cancer. I kept telling my wife that haemorrhoids couldn't be far behind."

Connolly disclosed in 2013 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's and prostate cancer on the same day.

He has since been given the all-clear from cancer and will travel through 28 states and 8,000 miles by train later this year in new ITV documentary series Billy Connolly's Tracks Across America.

His wife, Pamela Stephenson, said in an interview last year that she had noticed her husband's hand shaking for many years, but assumed it was because he had spent too long playing the banjo rather than a sign of Parkinson's.

She said: ''I've actually noticed his hand shaking for many, many years. I used to think he was playing the banjo a bit too much. I think it's been there for a long time.''

X Factor’ boyband Stereo Kicks have announced they are to split.

The eight-piece group were put together on last year’s series of the ITV talent show, when they failed to make it through Bootcamp as solo acts.

However, after failing to land a record deal after the show ended, the lads have decided to call things a day.

The group - made up of Casey Johnson, Reece Bibby, Barclay Beales, Charlie Jones, Tom Mann, Jake Sims, Chris Leonard and James Graham - announced the news to their fans in a statement on their Facebook page.

“We all feel the time has come for us to now continue our journeys individually,” they wrote.

“We have learnt first-hand just how tough the industry is as an unsigned act. Unfortunately, due to these circumstances, we are no longer able to carry on as a band.

“Please understand that there is nothing more that you could have done and that this is a situation completely beyond both your control and ours.

“We have considered endless ways of how we might try to make this work, but it is logistically impossible for us to continue as Stereo Kicks. From the bottom of our hearts, we will be forever grateful for all of your hard work, support and love. We can't thank you enough.”

A message to our fans…Hey Everybody,Let us start by saying what an AMAZING year it has been for all of us!As most...

Posted by Stereo Kicks on Saturday, 18 July 2015

They insisted that they still remain the “best of friends” and “will continue to support each other in everything we do”.

The boys had hoped to land a recording contract after releasing debut single ‘Love Me So’ last month.

The track was funded by their management company, James Grant, but it failed to set the charts alight, entering the top 40 at number 31.

They will continue to play gigs that had already been scheduled for this week, with their farewell performance at Thorpe Park on Saturday 25 July.

Revealing what he told Louis upon finding out the news, Simon told The Sun: “I said to him, ‘You man up. You’re fortunate because you’re in a position to be able to look after the baby and not worry too much about that.

“But I also told him, ‘I’ve received bad calls in my life but this is not one of them. This is your business but I’m here for you’.”

The record label boss also insisted that Louis’ impending fatherhood would not affect the band’s reputation.

He said: “He didn’t kill anyone. He got someone pregnant. It happens every day all over the world. Again, Louis has got great family around him and, look, it’s a plus, not a negative.”

Louis and Briana are no longer a couple, but they are both said to be “really happy” at the news, which has reportedly brought them closer together.

A source told People magazine last week: “They are both really happy and although they aren’t in a relationship, their friendship is extremely strong and they are both really excited about the baby.

“It’s early days and Briana and the baby’s health are the most important things right now.”

Louis and Briana’s fling came after the star split from long-term girlfriend Eleanor Calder, who is said to be “devastated” by the news, according to The Mirror.

But Hollywood Life reports that Louis has been in touch with Eleanor, still seemingly having feelings for his ex.

A source said: “He’s been reaching out to Eleanor more than ever before and reassuring her that he never wanted to hurt her…that the pregnancy wasn’t planned and that he’s not in a serious relationship with Briana.

“He’s been telling Eleanor that no one can compare to her. Louis feels like he let Eleanor down and for that he’s really sorry,” the source continued. “He feels bad and knows how hard it’s been on her.”

The ‘X Factor’ boss was devastated when 89-year-old Julie Brett passed away after suffering a stroke, and since has avoided speaking to the press at auditions for the ITV talent show.

But Simon has now spoken to The Sun in a highly emotional interview, revealing his pain at watching his mother die for the last nine months, while she suffered with a secret illness.

She’d been ill for a very long time. It really happened last year and it was a tough, tough period,” he said.

“But I didn’t want to burden anyone else with my problem. That’s why I never talked about it.

“In a way, that was the hardest part because it was always on your mind. But look, I experienced it with my dad and the only thing I can say is that I have incredible memories.”

In the wake of her death, Simon cancelled two days of ‘X Factor’ auditions to grieve, but later threw himself back into work in tribute to Julie, who counted ‘X Factor’ as her favourite show that her son worked on.

“It sounds corny but it’s exactly what she would have wanted me to do as she loved what I did,” he said. “When it came to work, she would say, ‘Get back and do what you enjoy’.”

Simon's co-judge Cheryl Fernandez-Versini has also spoken about how the team have rallied around their boss.

She told The Mirror: “I’ve always admired his strength and tenacity, but now I have a whole new level of respect and love for him.”

Julie was the mother of four boys - Nicholas, Simon, Tony and Michael, and step-mother to John and June.

Announcing her passing on 5 July, the family said: "Today our beloved mum Julie passed away. Anyone who had met her would know what a truly special and kind lady she was. We are heartbroken and will miss her terribly, but she is now at peace.”

Simon later thanked fans for their support when he first broke his silence on Twitter.

He tweeted: “My family lost someone very special on Sunday. My Mum. I am overwhelmed with gratitude for all of the kind messages received. Thank you. X.”

The Sun reports that Rita flew out to LA before ‘X Factor’ auditions started two weeks ago to hold summit talks with the green-haired son of fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger, but after she returned to the UK, they failed to working through their issues, and called time on the relationship.

A source said: “Rita and Ricky found it difficult to continue their relationship due to their ongoing work commitments.

“They both tried to make it work but their schedules made it difficult. They are on two different sides of the Atlantic and Rita is going to be based in the UK for the next five months.”

While The Sun say the split was “amicable” and “they remain friends”, The Mirror paints a very different picture.

Their insider claimed that things between the pair had been “increasingly strained”, adding: “As Rita’s star has risen, things had been frosty for some time.”

Katie Hopkins Reveals Daughter Is Autism Sufferer, Just Two Months After Publicly Attacking Nine-Year-Old With Condition

Katie Hopkins has revealed that her daughter suffers with autism - just two months after she publicly attacked a child with the condition.

The controversial columnist - who is a mother to three children, Maximillian, Poppy and India - believes it to be a “gift”, despite branding nine-year-old sufferer Honey Thomas a “t***” on Twitter.

Speaking to The Guardian about her own child’s condition, Katie said: “It’s an awesome thing, to live with a child who can memorise a times table in two minutes. They don’t get things emotionally."

The ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ star caused controversy when she launched an attack at Honey, after she and her family featured in Channel 4 documentary ‘Born Naughty?’.

She wrote at the time: "Honey can't complete the autism assessment as she is too busy being a complete t***. But the s*** mum assessment is complete #bornnaughty.”

She also hit out at Honey’s weight, adding: “Honey is completing a story about three little pigs. She identifies strongly with this animal #bornnaughty”.

Katie comments were slammed by the National Autistic Society in May, and the charity now say they are “pleased” she has revealed she has an autistic daughter, inviting her to share her experiences.

Carol Povey, Director of the Centre for Autism at the National Autistic Society told The Mirror: "We're pleased that Katie Hopkins has now shared the fact that one of her children is on the autism spectrum.

"After her offensive tweet about a child on the spectrum featured on the TV documentary 'Born Naughty?', the NAS responded that aiming to shock was what Katie did, so rather than expecting her to change, we invited her to visit one of our branches to find out more.

"Clearly, as the mother of an autistic child, she already knows about the rewards and challenges this brings. But our invitation stands, if she would like to share her experiences with any of the autistic adults and families running hundreds of support groups across the UK."

Stewart Lee Guardian Column Sees Comedian Slate BBC Reform Panel, Twitter Explodes With Support

Stewart Lee has joined the fight to protect the BBC - and it seems like pretty much everyone on Twitter agrees.

In a column for the Guardian, he brands a group chosen by the government to help decide the BBC’s future as “witch-hunters”, as support for the broadcaster from high-profile figures continues to mount.

stewart lee
Stewart Lee is less than impressed with the BBC's 'reform panel'

The group of experts, which includes the chairwoman of the Banking Standards Board and the executive chairman of smartphone app Shazam, is described acerbically by Lee as a “veritable human centipede of business-minded entities" stitched together "in order to safeguard the nation’s cultural heritage”.

The inclusion of Dawn Airey, the former head of Channel 5, is akin to “asking someone who draws ejaculating penises on the inside of public toilet cubicle doors to curate the National Gallery”, he adds.

The comedian questions why some of the BBC’s biggest success stories have not been invited to join the debate, as well as other figures from the entertainment world - including himself.

SEE ALSO:

The “sad truth”, he says, is that such creatives “see culture as inherently valuable in and of itself, not simply as a branch of business that is too naive to know how to maximise its profit margins”.

The government’s consultation paper on the BBC will ask questions about the broadcaster’s purpose and future.

Former ‘Top Gear’ presenters Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond appear to have dropped their biggest hint yet that they could be fronting a new Netflix show.

The trio were presenting a live show in Perth, Australia, when, according to reports, they teased details of new show plans.

The Express reports that Jezza told the audience that ‘Top Gear’ will have a new home, adding: “Amazingly, there had been a lot of interest in us doing a car show for television.

"Who knows, very soon once more you will be seeing us on a television or an internet near where you live.”

Later when Richard pronounced ‘Z’ in an American accent, Jeremy told him, "You're not in America,” to which Richard replied: "Not yet.”

While on the tour, Jeremy has continued to pen his weekly Sunday Times columns, and in his most recent, he made a shocking revelation about his final ‘Top Gear’ track lap, which he completed earlier this month.

The presenter - who, let’s not forget, parted ways from the BBC after punching a producer in the face - revealed that the Beeb made sure he couldn’t pocket any keepsakes.

“I was feeling a bit choked as I went through the gates for the very last time,” he wrote. “The ‘Top Gear’ portable office was locked to stop me taking even a small souvenir. The hangar was empty.”

What a shame.

Meanwhile, new ‘Top Gear’ host Chris Evans is apparently busy preparing to host a new series of the show, though his latest tweets aren’t exactly crystal clear.

Yeah… We don’t really know what he means.

Chris is currently on the hunt for some ‘Top Gear’ co-presenters, and fans of the motoring show have until the end of today (20 July) to apply for the job.

Find out how to put yourself forward for the role here.

Janet Jackson Is Your New Favourite Feminist Icon

Last month, after a seven-year break, Janet Jackson announced a new album and an upcoming world tour. I lost my shit. Fan of her music or not, you need to know that this woman is a big deal. In the teaser announcement for her new album, twenty-five years after Rhythm Nation, Janet tells us she still wants to be part of 'the conversation'. Ok, she's unlikely to inform constitutional change, but at a time when pop stars are inauthentic and apolitical, it's refreshing. Janet is as culturally relevant as ever.

Inspired by protest songwriters like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, Janet has explored themes of domestic violence, gender inequality, sex, homophobia, racism... and on occasion she is still patronisingly referred to as Michael's sister. (But, y'know, Jermaine just gets called Jermaine.) After her breakthrough album Control, her mantra 'Miss Jackson, if you're nasty...' became the incarnation of Aretha's R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Growing up in the shadow of her famous brothers, the obstacles of her gender were apparent from the start, and she has been overcoming them ever since.

Janet is often compared with her female peers, mostly Madonna or Beyoncé, as though we only need one awesome female pop star or something. While Madge and Bey have earned kudos for their respective passages in The Feminist Agenda, Janet's part remains relatively understated. Where Beyoncé's message is confused (on the same album Bey samples Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and includes the lyric "eat the cake Anna Mae") and Madge's message is fairly limited to sex, Janet ticks all the boxes. Her go-to themes of sexuality and social commentary are well documented. She went from 'Let's Wait A While' to 'Anytime, Anyplace' seamlessly, demonstrating that when it comes to sex, it's cool for women to say yes or no - but the underlying message is always about control. When she explores lesbian fantasies or plays around with traditional gender roles in her lyrics, it's a far cry from Madonna or Katy Perry fetishizing lesbians for male titillation. Janet's sexuality isn't for men, it's for herself. She actively champions gay pride, and her challenging the heteronormative is all part of that celebration.

As the youngest Jackson, the plan was to create her brand as wholesome, inoffensive, bland. Janet grew up acting in saccharine sit-coms that, like The Cosby Show that followed, broke ground by placing African-American characters centre-stage. However, there were hidden caveats to apparent public acceptance for African-American culture in the 80's. Bill Cosby, a man of considerable influence back in the day, admonished his Cosby Show co-star Lisa Bonet for filming a sex scene, and was an outspoken opponent of certain elements of black culture. The rules for 'respectable' black culture were set - don't be provocative, don't talk about racial inequality, don't show your sexuality and don't get involved with hip hop. Janet did all of these things. She began making music with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and fired her father as her manager at a time when she was taking a huge risk with her career. Janet worked with some of the most highly respected artists in hip hop, such as Heavy D, Tupac, Chuck Fucking D, and Q-Tip. She's also worked with two of the most successful and respected female rappers, her pals Missy Elliot and MC Lyte.

Rather than play down whom she felt she was, Janet refused to identify primarily as 'all-American', or even as a Jackson. Janet identifies first and foremost as a black woman. She has never apologised for her race or gender or what they mean for her. Her skin is not lightened, she has not developed a thigh-gap (digitally or otherwise) and she openly struggles with her own fluctuating weight, whilst criticizing the body-scrutiny and pressure that women are under to conform. Janet supports other female performers and when interviewers try and throw shade at Mariah, Gaga or Rihanna, she takes them to task.

The 'Wardrobe Malfunction' was a lesson in public expectations of men versus those of women. Janet was blacklisted, sued, censored and lambasted by the media. It went to the Supreme Court. It damaged her album sales. A year into the Iraq war, President Bush publicly condemned her. Timberlake, however, won two Grammy's - proving once again that being a white male is pretty sweet. Janet duly made her apology but called out the hysterical hypocrisy of the media, and of the President, whom she claimed used Nipplegate as a distraction from the election. This all actually happened because of a second of tit. Janet maintained that a woman's body is not shameful. Now? Well, now it's obvious she was the first to Free The Nipple.

Janet Jackson is certainly not a new feminist icon, but twenty-five years later we still want to be part of her Rhythm Nation. Bow down, bitches.

The only thing tutor and student usually ever in common is the fact they work in the same place.
Making Noize Production, tutor, with Harmonix met Cynthia Taiwo, student, while teaching a music course at an East London media college. The body of work they all managed to come up with, a festival party anthem, is A star!

Rudimental, the platinum selling 4 piece unveiled their latest offering, Love Aint Just A Word featuring grime legend Dizzee Rascal and Anne-Marie. Although Dizzee is obviously a big pull feature wise, its Anne-Marie's distinctively rough vocals that carries this bouncy Reggae, DnB and Ska fused riddim!

The South London collective, House Of Pharoahs, release their latest body of work, Southern Stamp EP. The EP. which is probably going to be on repeat for alot of stoners, has melodic and euphoric productions with thought provoking lyrics of youth struggle. Not the best mix down job in terms of sound quality, but watching HOP perform live might have to be the next list to tick off this summer.

Former Ugandan child soldier, Goddaz, still has a fighters spirit in him. Here, he heads up his latest track, Joint Enterprise: Not Guilty by Association (JENGbA), a grass roots campaign launched by families wanting to highlight the abuse of the Joint Enterprise doctrine. The verses highlight the plight many young people and their families go through, when charged but claim, not guilty by association. Thought provoking, political music.

Etta Bond, when are you going to drop a full body of work? this ask must be echoing all over her social media platform. Seen And Never Heard with Chris Loco is one of her best vocal works to date, simply for it's laid back and effortlessly soulful tone on a groove sound. Album? we're waiting!

Tame Impala's 'Currents' - A Contemporary Psychedelic Heartbreak

Tame Impala's 2012 debut album, Lonerism, was a modernized psychedelic infusion of experimental prog rock and 60's emulation. Elephant captured their unique sound and remains the Australian band's biggest hit. The band has now returned with their second studio album, Currents.

Following Lonerism was always going to be a difficult feat. Just like 'Definitely Maybe', this debut album elevated the band's presence, earning them international recognition, captivating those who were awaiting a refreshingly new sound. Currents, which has the potential to be the band's 'What's The Story' debut follow-up, returns the band's psychedelic infused trademark signature but with an alternative approach.

Whilst Lonerism was a guitar-heavy album, Currents, steps away from guitar-rock and embraces synthesizers, 80's drum rhythms and other electronic sounds.
Let It Happen, the album's opening track, would not seem out of place on a Daft Punk record, due to its dubbed electronic drum beats and synth riffs. The whirling echoes permeating throughout Gossip suggests a lost-in-space feel, and the droning synth discords held underneath Yes I'm Changing would fit comfortably in an 80's techno ballad.

The clever thing about Currents and what Tame Impala does best is that the band incorporates all of these sounds symphonically, which establishes a psychedelic sound that feels fresh but familiar to the band. Kevin Parker, the band's leader and front man, has an ethereally feather-light voice, which sits above the band's unique instrumental infusion, has found a pleasant balance between eerie and dreamy. This mellifluous blend results in an unmistakably Tame Impala sound, despite using alternative instruments.

Each song takes the listener on a euphoric journey and it is upon which, we find heartbreakingly powerful lyrics, which are far more profound than Parker's lyrics on the band's debut album. 'I felt the strangest emotion but it wasn't hate, for once/Yes I'm changing, yes I'm gone/Yes I'm older, yes I'm moving on/And if you don't think it's a crime you can come along, with me' from Yes I'm Changing depicts the upwards struggle of overcoming a breakup, with the final line reflecting in the difficulty in parting forever. The Less I Know The Better tells the tale of unrequited love. 'Oh my love, can't you see yourself by my side/No surprise when you're on his shoulder like every night', reflects the agony of seeing a lover with someone else and the pain which must be endured during love in vain. Cause I'm A Man, one of the album's best tracks, portrays the self-hatred and struggle of heartbreak. 'Lost in the moment for a second time/Each fucking doubt I make, unleash a cry/I'm just pathetic, that's the reason why In desperation/all that you can do is ask me why', and 'But I have no voice if I don't speak my mind/My weakness is the source of all my pride, I'll tell you why', makes this song excruciatingly powerful.

This is not to say that this album is a Damien Rice depression-filled sinkhole. As already stated, the musical backbone of the album is generally upbeat, even when the lyrics are deeply moving. To me, this is where the album truly excels. Kevin Parker has developed his songwriting techniques to integrate more personified and poetic lyrics, whilst incorporating different instruments and sounds, all the while maintaining the band's iconic psychedelic sound.

8/10

His body was found at the bottom of the pool at Demi’s LA home, after a party that took place on Saturday night.

The actress was not home at the time, but officers arrived at the property to find a small group of people around the body.

Demi later released a statement, describing her “absolute shock”.

"I was out of the country traveling to meet my daughters for a birthday celebration when I got the devastating news."

She added that it was an "unthinkable tragedy and my heart goes out to this young man's family and friends".

The LA County coroner has said that the death appears to be accidental, and the 21-year-old's friends have revealed that he was unable to swim.

TMZ, who originally broke the story, cited a neighbour as saying that Demi's children have been throwing pool parties regularly at the house.

Demi has three children, Rumer, 26, Scout, 23, and Tallula, 21, with ex-husband Bruce Willis. She divorced Ashton Kutcher in 2013.

Congrats, Kevin and Karen!

The couple have shared their wedding snaps with Hello! magazine, and Kevin has admitted that he was more nervous about his big day, than he is starring on ‘Strictly’.

"Dancing in front of millions of people is way easier than that," he told the mag.

However, Karen didn’t suffer the same nerves.

“When I was getting ready, I said to my make-up artist, 'Is it weird that I'm so calm?'” she told Hello!. “She said the best thing ever, 'You're so calm because you've made the right choice.' And it made me think, 'I have nothing to worry about because I'm going to marry the person I've been in love with since the day we met.'"

‘Good Morning Britain’ presenter Susanna shared her joy at attending the swish bash, adding: "It's an absolute joy to be here on their big day. They are beautiful people, inside and out."

Susanna was paired with Kevin when she appeared on the BBC show back in 2013.

The presenter came close to nabbing the Glitterball trophy, but lost out to Abbey Clancy.

See all the pictures from Kevin and Karen’s wedding in Hello! magazine, out now.
